got my attention within the first minute of this instruction. noone really talks about how important recording is to this whole proccess. i think its the most important part of creating a song. a great recording creates great mixing opportunities!
@lilDEXprods QAdobe Audition CS 5.5 I have messed around with it a little but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to mix vocals. I have heard some really great stuff out there but mine always sounds live.
There is some bad advice in this vide... do not let your vocalist go forward or back from the pop screen as they change volume. Have them sing as loud as they are going to get and adjust input from there. Use automation and compression to fix variance... also the pop filter should only be about 3 - 4 fingers length away from the mic and the vocalist should be as close to it as they can get. UNLESS You want a distant sound and that is the sound you are going for.
Awesome video , keep puttin em out. Would like to see different scenarios on where i need to setup foam in a bedroom for home recording. Thanks 4 the knowledge
I'm just about to take my vocal home recordings to the next level... This is a great START... I learned a lot about microphone placement.. HERE... THANKS A LOT!
First time i've seen your video.really well done. nice and simple.easy to understand.no bullshit and headaces i've gettig waticing others so called experts. thanks.dd
Thanks for this info, Mr. Thompson. I'm going to definitely consider having my clients back up from the pop filter. The distance from my mic to my pop filter was about the same as yours, but my artists usually get as close as they can to it. I'll let you know if this helped.
Thus- the initial reason I said "SADLY" as it's NOW way too late (after two years & 40+thousand views) for you to "correct" such a BASIC (student) mistake- purporting to "be" a professional recording studio techie- whilst SHOWING everyone- you cannot even do a "simple" re-balancing act between RHS & LHS "microphone" put chs such as any school kid could easily do (even as far BACK as when I was doing that pre-1965 & the reason I say PRE_1965 should become "extremely" obvious: watch?v=Uvxt_VZEmW4
Ah sadly I have arrived into this video many MOONS after it was originally uploaded &? Although I myself have ONLY just heard the 1st minute of the audio (done- by a PROFESIONAL sound recording Mixer, techie, accoustics engineer on the delicate subject of VOCALS RECORDINGS (especially) of LEAD VOCALISTS (such as yourself talking here) & So.? WHY have U deliberately recorded the audio here, with a serious deficiency on LHS channel, such that you are actually a BACKING VOCALIST middle "rear" RHS.?
Hey there, really good explanations! But from my experience when I record more than about 10 inches from my mic, I get that proximity effect...I need to get at about 6 inches of the mic to get better 'vocal presence'. By the way I'm using a Blue Yeti condenser USB mic (not the best but still sounds amazing for 100$).
This is a great, great video. Some of these tips mentioned helped improve my vocal recording's right away especially the distance from the mic tip. One thing I did do as a beginner, was record phantom power on next to my monitors, and due to the fact I didn't have a booth, a loud feedback noise was produced. That's where I have a question, especially since you mentioned owning a mic for 8 years with it still working. Can feedback like that damage a condenser microphone and will it be noticeable?
Although I have not had any issues with the pop filter from being too close, I might give the distance thing a try as I like your suggestion about allowing the microphone to breathe.
Thanks for the great advice.
Although I was actually looking for a video about background vocals, I'll try to take a look at your detailed video about lead vocals.
i new to logic. could someone please p.m me on how to record through the jack input at side of laptop. for some reason the record is going through the little speaker at the top of screen and i cant seem to record through the little jack at side. cant find the settings. Im using logic 8 btw thanks
This is the first video to talk about latency between your interface to your computer. That is my problem...when recording vocals or guitar, I have to mute the track that I'm recording it with, because it's a second behind and it throws people off.
I think it's because at the moment I'm using computer speakers, so the speakers aren't hooked into the actual interface, which takes longer for the sound to get through the mic, into the cable, into the interface, and then the computer. can you help?
I've noticed that a lot of vocalists don't like leaning back when singing - moving their head to the side a little works better in my experience but you're the pro. Great video. Thanks
I'm really glad you took out the time to do this video. It has helped me to understand more about why I was havin so much trouble in my mixes. I called a studio to see if I could get my song recorded and sit in on the mixing process, and they didn't give me the time of day.
hey J Anthony, nice vids!!i Im just starting out with recoding and i really appreciate what you're doing. I was wondering if you can add some little tips on EQ-ing for lead vocals on your next video. I'm running Logic 8 myself and this really helps a lot!!
hey ! thanks man! apreciate you giving this tips out because this things usually come
in time and knowing all this makes us start on a better foot, and btw this is one of the most focused videos, exactly what you need to know and made very clear. respect and keep up the good work!
you`r advices are verry good but if i wold get to far from the mic ill get ecou from my bedroom ..i have a home studio and don`t have any soundproofing ...i don`t know how is the rode k2 ..i have the rode nt 1000 ...well i`ll experiment and see the result !
i use a samson c01u usb studio condenser mic and am insanely broke so i have no professional set up whatsoever... i cant afford to but any better equipment or anything to help with the room i record in.. are there any tips you would have for using this mic in particular aside from placement?
I am currently using Logic 8 Pro. It is great. I have not found a reason to upgrade yet although I also do not know of any specific changes made to the audio engine between version 8 and 9. Also think about your audio interface as that has a material impact on your sound when recording, playback, mixing, and mastering depending on your setup. Bottom line is that Logic is clean...I have used it on many commercial projects.
i just transitioned from pro tools le, reason, and record to logic studio 8. Logic is just like all of those programs in one. Plus it came with wave burner which is amazing for mastering, only down fall is that when using wave burner i have to burn a cd, it would be much nicer if i could use wave burner and export to my desktop

In my school they insist that you should always put reverb on the vocalist's monitors because that increases their confidence a lot.

Do you still recommend distant micing if your using a shure sm7b ?
I'm recording at home which isn't the most ideal. lol
I don't have a soundproof / treated room to record my vocals. I know this is subjective, when deciding what's best.
I play live more than I record, so I'm used to sticking a mic right in my face or against an amp.
ps. Your vocal sounds/productions are incredible.
