  • Hello. So I bought an Ibook G4 on the internet. And it messed up and crashed when I turned it on.So my dad went and got it repaired.Turns out it needed a new hard drive. So bluh bluh new hard drive.Well everything is old, outdated, I cant open iTunes because i need quicktime 7.5.5 by the way when I tried downloading quicktime 7.5.5 it said that it could not be run is DOS modeAnd i was wondering if you had any advice or a link to where i could trade this mac for a windows powered computer plz respond

  • ES UNA MIERDA DE VIDEO

  • I can't believe Apple designed the ibook this way. I'm glad they've made their newer models more serviceable.

  • im eating my dinner!

  • time lapse tutorials are a waste of time. no one can follow at this speed. if you are going to go to the trouble of doing it why not post the entire video so it would be useful instead of this macho speed crap

  • Absolutely incrediblely bad design. I could replace this in a PC in 3 minutes. Awful Awful things

  • I have an iBook G4 and it crashed, but I have a DVD stuck the disc drive, and the computer won't start up, how do I open it to get the the disc??

  • @Skatemore1243 - Yikes! I'd consult with an authorized repair technician, or follow the directions from iFixit for removing the DVD drive, then trying to figure out how to manually eject the disc...

On your laptop, there might still be a pin on one of the ends of the slot you can push with a paperclip to manually eject the DVD. Or not; I don't have a G4 to test.

  • @Skatemore1243 the dvd drive uses a sata connector. so, plug the drive into a pc/mac(as long as you gove it power, that will be fine). then, make sure that you can hear the drive spinning. then, take two credit card and sitck it in. one on the top, one of the bottom and pull it out. or you can use a pair of tweezers if you don;t have two credit cards. or another difficult way is to unscrew the dvd drive until you can see the disc and eject the disc

  • What did you get the equipment to do this? Is there some type of kit i can buy?

  • @heyapie - Just a mini-screwdriver kit from a local RadioShack or hardware store.

  • worst. video. ever.

  • what do i do now that i replaced the hard drive on my ibook? i only have my macbook install disk.... what do i do?

  • @edwardomus - You'll need to find an older Mac OS X Install disc, or hope the MacBook disk will work in your iBook (put it in, restart, and hold down the C key to boot from the DVD).

  • My hard drive crashed.. :( suxx

  • please put video for replace CD rom

    PowerBookG4

  • dam.... OUCH! macboys are crying now!

  • geek

  • Lmao. Great that you can fix your laptop. TBH I was very interested in a higher quality video from the first video response to my google query. A clear view, perhaps some information and precautions.. This is more for entertainment purposes than it is helpful. =/

  • very helpful! just pay attention, you can see all the steps. freeze frame. what else do you need?

  • do these macs have target drive mode?

  • Yes, they do - just hold down the 'T' button during startup.

  • then is that not a better way of getting information form a hard drive. Is there a way doing this through usb with the hard drive still inside the ibook.

  • eeer... would you replace the motherboard on my ibook?? I have the i book, I have the new mother board, I just can't find someone to install it... I'm just kidding, I'm too far away from anyone who can do it -.-

  • What kind of Hard Drive is in a G4?

  • It's an ATA-6 2.5" laptop hard drive.

  • Thanks.

  • i was missing 5 screws but no holes were missing cept one that i knew of and i dont understand but it works and stuff solid oh geeze

  • Dude can you slow the friggen video down bozo so i can see how to do it.

  • Sorry, I didn't think it would be over so quick, so I had set my camera to take pictures every 10 seconds instead of every second (which I should've done).

  • I just did this today. NOT FUN. I don't suggest doing this unless absolutely necessary. I did it only as an "upgrade" and now I don't know if it was worth the trouble.

Hardest part is assembling everything again when you're done. The cables are hard to reconnect.

I'll admit that it took me about 2 hours!

Upgraded from a 4200rpm 30gb drive to a 5400 160gb drive. Was tempted to use a 7200rpm IDE, but that would have been stupid due to heat.

Those Ibooks sure are built like tanks though.

  • I agree. Apple really didn't want people tampering with there computers. :(

  • They've just filed a patent for sticky labels to put inside Macs, iPods and iPhones so when you take it to an Apple store, they know if you (or a previous owner) opened it up.

  • @CharlieIsleofMan you cant open it yourself? doesnt apple allow that?

  • @zebradancing Well yes you can at present but it voids your warranty and AppleCare too. What these sticky labels would do would make it easier for Apple to see whether you have opened it up or not.

  • *heavy groans*

all i want is to copy some old files off a dying lappy with a bust OS - why does it have to be so hard!

anyway, thx for the reference, i need a site like that.

  • Yeah - iFixIt is a great site... I'll be using it this evening to replace the hard drive in my MacBook Pro!

  • I did the same operation over 2 years ago, without help or instructions. No leftover screws, but it was a huge PITA, and I scratched/nicked up the plastic case in several spots. I was cursing Steve Jobs name the entire time. lol. Laptop was much snappier with the 7200 rpm drive.

  • Yeah - it definitely speeds things up (so it's worth it in the end).

  • Hmmm. I would'nt mind watching a 5 or even 10 min video in real time to make sure I'm doing it right.

  • Unfortunately, I no longer have the iBook anymore, or else I might open it up again! Also, in 'real time,' this project took about 35 or 40 minutes... much longer than the 10 minute maximum for YouTube videos :-(

  • all of that just for a hard drive? damn

  • I know right! The macBooks hard drive is much eaiser to replace. Just take out the battery and pull a tab! Thats it!

  • I didnt like that vid. It was too fast so useless at helping to change hdd.

What the heck happened to the keyboard of the poor thing?

  • The keyboard was covered by a screen protector, so you can't see it at the beginning/end shots. Also, the video was simply made to show the complexity of the repair. If you'd like the guide, go to the ifixit website.

  • it was eaten and shat out.

  • i did the same on my iBook G4 it took me over 2 hours i upgraded from 60 GB to 160 GB.

  • That's a much nicer upgrade than what *I* did! I have a 160 GB drive on my current laptop; I'm hoping a year from now there will be a 500 GB drive I can install in it...

  • awesome !

  • Hey! What is that paper that you are using to organize the part??

  • I printed it out from MacFixIt.

  • I cant find that printable thing from MacFixit ANYWHERE... can you send a link??

    THX

  • more slow men

  • so much easier on a macbook

  • Quite true!

  • I thought you peepz had like "the apple dealer" for these kinds of things :p

  • all that work just to change a hardrive? damn...

  • I'm glad Apple changed the design of the new Macbooks - now all you have to do is remove the battery, pull out the old drive, and slip in the new one.

  • why did apple make it so damn hard to replace parts AARRRGGHH I want to upgrade to dvd-cdr/w and a 100+gb, but damn, I don't want to f- mine up (800 g3 old but still nice) The same goes for my mac-mini 1.5 g4 although it has everything except only 512mb ram I want 1gb and larger HD (80gb now)

  • haha, oh man thats pretty old.

Running PearPC on Windows, I can emulate a 975 MHz G3 with infinite (currently 5GB) RAM :]

  • 5 gbs?????? holy shit....

  • lol! I just did this on my old iBook G3 12" and it was just ridiculous.

  • I might have to do this to my 12" G3. Anybody got instructions or tips for me? It would be a HUGE help...

  • I'm afraid I may have to do it. I hear it clicking (not normal for it). Well, I do have some experience taking notebooks apart....maybe it'll be ok. <:/

  • very funny, 90 min! Good job and all but that looked like a lot of work to get a hard drive out.

  • Believe me... I won't be doing it again!
