Clarification.....When I said Jesus prayed for forgiveness at the cross, obviously he was praying for humanity not himself.

wagzel, you are applying a lesson on pride to the act of prayer. Was Jesus mistaken when he prayed at his baptism? Was Jesus mistaken when he prayed at Lazarus' tomb? Was he mistaken when he prayed for forgiveness at the cross? Furthermore it was customary for the high priest to pray publicly in the Old Testament. Why wouldn't Jesus our High Priest do the same for us?

Jesus taught one prayer and that is be done in private. He mocked those who prayed publicly.

Matthew 6:5-15 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words
