I'd like journalists to fact check these number rather than adding the disclaimer "this man says it's closing 50 pubs a week." It may well be true, but please do a little journalism and find out.

As for supermarkets selling alcohol for less than pubs, well yes they always have. You don't go to the supermarket for a pint though do you?

I doubt very much they sell for less than wholesale prices. How would they make a profit?

Like Scotland, the UK in its entirity should impose a minimum price per unit for alcohol and that should count for every place selling alcohol - supermarkets, pubs, off licenses etc. What's happening now is the supermarkets have been found raising prices in other products - in essentials like food, no less - to be able to keep the alcohol prices so low, it's ridiculous. The UK could easily pass that law without the EU "interfering".

I think that it is more a question of changes in people life-styles than anything else that is the cause for pubs to close down. I might be wrong.

I think you're right. Here in Holland the more traditional "brown" cafes (comparable to pubs) have been closing down in droves but more modern (and usually more expensive places) are cropping up like mushrooms. It seems to be a sign of the times much more than the cost of alcohol.

@megamarsvin yea man wtfs going on. when I first moved here 3 years ago weed costed like 2-3 euro less. but I think it has more to do with the dutch conservative government. I doubt the EU would be taxing people for weed They are arguing against the coffeeshops just as much as the EU. Thing with the Brits is theyr always been against the EU, and because of that get very little out it. Us dutch and Germans get way more out of it. We r all gonna be earning off of Greece for yeaaaaars haha
