  • @lisa0087 challa is punjabi word for ring ,, how ever here probably it represents the circle of life ... and song illustrates issues in life by using small examples taken from daily life ....translation may not reveal its deeper meaning ...since i too cant decipher it .. enjoy the music

  • The way music is used to impact the words used in this song are very good. The few instruments are more than enough to lay out the essence of those words.

  • The common meaning of word Chhalla in Punjabi is a ring shaped object. Word is also used for the ring to be worn on fingers. The word was often used for the formal rings exchanged when young people got engaged. Sometimes (very rarely, though) it is used as a word of endearment for an eligible young man who is good prospect for a ring. People would say "He is a chhalla". Also in the same sense, it is sometimes used as a "tongue in cheek" word for a young man who does seem to have good prospect.

  • It is in the same sense as the phrase "Sundriai ne Mundriai" in lohri rhymes. There the word "Mundri" is a beautiful young girl who is now of marriageable age. Here Rabbi has used this word in this sense, and he seemed to have expanded the scope its meaning to include the circumstances of a young man as well as the young man himself who feels deeply rooted in the place, on one hand and wondering about his situation on the other. Below is the translation for those who do not understand Punjabi.

  • Translation of the song Chhalla, it is not up to me Chhalla, it is not up to me Chhalla, it is not up to me Chhalla, it is not up to me Chhalla, it is under the control of mom I shall go only when / if she tells me to leave Listen, Chhallia Listen, O Chhallia Don't know who has put the curse on it /him Chhalla, Water coming from the "bumbi" (small bore tube-well) **1 . (Bumbi, actually is expression for small diesel motor, but the word also for the tube-well it runs)
  • Chhalla, water from "bumbi" Where have gone my friends? I have no news Listen O Chahllia On your berry tree, this one has grown (as) a thorn Chhalla,(there is) a long braid (girl) Chhalla, there a long braid Chhalla, there a long braid I kissed it in my dream As the desire had gone blind So, I listened only to my heart (Now) listen O Chhallia Now punish me as you like
  • Chhalla,(has grown) a lone banyan (a very large tree) Chhalla, a lone banyan Chhalla, a lone banyan But it is holding on to this support. Bellow is earth, Above is Allah (God) Listen O Chhallia How deep are its roots It (he) does not know himself. (From here on Rabbi repeats some of the verses as if he is pleading) Chhalla, it is not up to me Chhalla - it is under the control of my "mom" Chhalla - it is in under the control of my elder sister-in-law (next to matriarch mother, the eldest
  • (next to matriarch mother, the sister- in-law has a lot of say in the family affairs especially of younger members of the family ) Chhalla, (like) unripe mangoes **3 Give me some wise advice. Commit to some use whatever is left Of yours and my time Listen, O Chhallia Chhalla, (has grown) a lone banyan tree But it is holding on to this support. • thanx for comments

    yup u r right!!

    i m his fan

  • Thanks Brother for your encouraging patting.

In fact we all Punjabis should encourage intellectual singers to come forward and entertain us with substance. Presently we are flooded with Punjabi music purely representing villages. Not all Sikh live in villages but they are living in other part of the world.
