7200 rpms will eat up your battery life you guys, so if you really just want to upgrade just the memory without chopping into the battery life stick with the standard 5400 rpm hard drive that comes with it. Remember if you do decide to upgrade the hard drive period to get a 2.5 inch SATA, not 3.5 inch.
I've owned Apple computers since the 80's and Macs since the early 90's. I've never owned a non-Apple computer. However, this is one area where Apple just gets it WRONG!
I've worked with PC laptops in situations that required us to change the HD more than once a day (switching between "types" of work). Apple should make their hardware as easy to deal with as their software. Either they don't want you changing things without paying them or they just don't care about user needs in this area!
@ftlPhysicsGuy Right on man. I actually attempted to replace my ram on one of the previous generation Macbook Pros. I somehow managed to damage the clip holding it and of course that meant the whole logic board needed to be replaced and not the area I damaged. I had to fight like hell just to get them to repair it since they dont allow accidental damage. If they dont want you going inside, you should at least be able to make an appt at the Genius Bar to do the "dirty work"
Use Super Duper! to mirror the drive before you swap it out. That is step number one before you ever pick up a screw driver. Both drives will be bootable when you finish Super Duper!
You had to do ALL THAT just to get the freaking hard drive out??!? On my Acer Aspire 1200 laptop, one just needs to remove two screws on the bottom to remove the hard drive. Also, on my Acer, if you remove three additional screws, you get access to the memory, CPU, and the DVD drive.
Also, is it true that the CPU in the MacBook Pro is soldered into the motherboard and that it uses the aluminum case as a heatsink, causing major overheating/burning issues??
The newer Macbook Pro is very easy to swap hard drives in. Two screws and about five minutes and you're done. Don't hate. It's a waste of energy. Enjoy your Acer. :-)
I wish apple made this sort of thing easier to do and not void your warranty. I mean the macbook had a simple way to upgrade the hard drive, why not the pro?
does anybody know if its possible to upgrade the hard drive to 320 gb or 500 gb? thats the only reason i like the imac better, 200 just seems whimpy, is it possible to upgrade that much? do they make them that big for macbook pros? thank you
Yes, any SATA laptop-format drive can be used. The reason I went with the 200GB drive at the time was the 7200RPM speed, which gives a real performance boost. There are now 320GB 7200RPM drives.
Dude I was mocking RandomGeeek alright. He said something stupid, I replied to it. I don't actually type like that, Jeeze. I wish Youtube would put replies under the damn original comment like they used to.
Strange how they make the consumer notebook- the macbook, easier to upgrade than the macbook pro. To upgrade the macbook hard drive just pull out the battery and there it is.
It's really not that hard, but if you've never done it before, I'd practice on somebody else's computer first! It's going to void your warranty and cause a lot of damage if you break anything. :-O
i cand do that in a half a second

Changing the HD on a macbook is way easier, it's not that mac doesn't want people changing things themselves, I think it was just a design flaw.

wont it void the warranty?
Panditha666 2 years ago
It's no longer under warranty, anyway, so it doesn't matter. If it was covered under Applecare, I might have waited.
mallermedia 2 years ago
@Panditha666 No, upgrading your hard drive does not void your warranty.

The new model Macbook Pro is similar to the Macbook now. None of this is necessary any longer.
