This is the Rick I grew up with and fell in love with his music in the early 70's. His first and second album are incredible. Unfortunately music changed in the 80's. Although I enjoy his music from the 80's and onwards, it's the 70's music that really demonstrates the talent this man has. "What Would The Children Think" should have been a giant. It has Beatles written all over it.
Ahhh he's so cute!!! From a distance he looks like Keith Richards due to his fabulous head of hair, but their faces are completely different. Love the Aussie accent. A lot.
Rick is a very muti-talented dude and fantastic performer!!! I think he deserves a higher rating among his peers. Great !!! ~5*****'s~ Go gett'em Rick!!!
I met him nano seconds in '72 in NY coming out of 16 mag office. and he sounded so cute with accent saying "I late" as he scribbled on couple lps (mine was one).
He went to english speaking classes in Los Angeles, Ca to lose his accent so he could get acting jobs but if you listen to his voice he has that nasal sound which is the accent left behind.
Such a young Rick Springfield. How fun to see- what a great accent and interesting to listen now, to what was going on and how he thought then. And years later - oh the talent and marvelous music this young man did produce...loving his new cd Venus in Overdrive.
This was a real treat to see him back in the 70's, with that accent, wow! Thanks for posting this. Still love this man after all these years. He just gets better and better in everyway. Carol in A2 MI
This guy wins the male category for most spectacular seventies hair.
I was into him for his "Working Class Dog" period. Someone bought me a copy of his "Beginnings" album at the time. It didn't do much for me, but I was just a kid and didn't know much.
I met Rick last night and always wondered what he sounded like with his accent. Thanks for posting this. He truly is an underrated talent. Oh and I forgot handsome, sexy...still shaking from last night..the hottest almost 60? not possible.
"Famous in Australia isn't really "famous," is it?"
I beg to differ, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, REM, Led Zeppelin and many many more artists are famous in Australia, as I'm sure they are famous in the U.S and other parts of the world as well.
I feel I should point this out to you as you seem unaware of this. Good day to you.
Don't forget about ABBA... most of their fame was due to Australians. They didn't really give a $&%& about touring/promoting in the US. We (Americans) missed out on them for the most part. Unfortunatly, Sheldonwh couldn't be more incorrect.
Oh yes ABBA. Thanks for reminding me. I guess we were just lucky that our teens picked up on them early in their career. I think I read somewhere that they turned down something like a billion dollars to reform and do a tour.
Thanks for cultivating the American accent, Rick! (much easier listening than the Aussie accent) So glad you broke out of the "Speak to the Sky" sound (it was a little too hillbilly for us here in the states)! Since then, you've never disappointed and always rocked (even through a few of your dark times). Thanks from the Blondies ! See you in '08!
In the 80's I was a teenager, completely obsessed with R.S. I had hand drawn images of him and posters covering my room walls, and I even made puppets called Rick and Ron (his dog). I made myself crazy trying to find his previous work, but this I've never seen. I'm 40 now, and I still think he's HOT!
This is the Rick I was introduced to and fell in love with in 1972. Although I enjoy his 80's music, I feel his 70's material is much more mature and has more depth. "What Would The Children Think" is an incredible record. Unfortunately, Rick's good looks and the teeny bopper crowd destroyed any possibility that Rick could be taken seriously as one of the greatest musicians of the 70's.
Now this was the Rick *I* first saw & loved!! Course I still love the man, great person, and artist! But when he came *back* to forefront in 1981, I remember sayig "That's MY Rick" and "Where did all his hair go", LOL
Still love the man & his music & he does INDEED still Rock, saw him last year
i frikin love this guy hes my all time favy singer ive seen him over27 time ... each concert i love him more & more... since this video his accent has changed and he definately got huge lol ahhhhhh i luv this guy!!!
Rick said in an interview with Soaps In Depth magazine that a friend of his gave him a link to this clip on YouTube and he studied it to get his accent back for Eli.
I told him that the accent threw me fpr a loop when I saw him on Aug 10 2000. He laughed at that after I told him that I had Copes of Some of the Mission: magic cartoons.. He groaned at that, but must have loved the expression on my face when I told him about the accent thing...
OMG! That was AMAZING! I never heard him with his accent before!! (Not counting Eli Love.) That was cool. His accent is SO thick, you almost can't tell it's him talking. He is completely Americanized now...wow. Thanks for posting this!!
Rick Springfield! I think one of the very first LP's I ever bought was Ricks "Beginnings" LP. I cried for days after I had a fight with my sister and she drew a moustache on Ricks LP cover - IN INK - I might add, I was devastated..as I tried to erase the moustache off and did even more damage to his sweet face :( I still have his records, and still enjoy listening to all the early works.
Am hoping to be able to see him perform while he is in Australia.
Awesome old school clip! I dig the aussie accent. I saw an interview with him from the 80's and he said he worked hard to lose the accent while taking acting classes back in the mid 70's.
I have every single album & CD he ever recorded, GREAT STUFF!
He doesn't have an Aussie accent anymore, his American accent isn't fake. As a matter of fact, I feel listening to Eli Love currently, that Rick can't fake an Aussie accent very well. Eli often slips up on the accent.
id love to see a scene with rick springfield and ingo rademacher i would imagine it would be awfuly hard for rick to hold on to that fake american accent
I quite agree....notice he's still biting his lip? Old habits never die!! I love the accent as well. And from what I understand it still comes out when he's tired. Can't wait to see him in Sept.
Good interview. LOVED the accent! I've always liked his voice in the song "What Will The Children Think" but I must admit I didn't understand the lyrics until I was well into my adulthood. It still blows my mind that some cynics could listen to the lyrics from his earlier music and call it "bubblegum".... he wasn't afraid to tackle the issue of life even back in those days.
Really fun and fascinating to see this EARLY interview with an oh so young Rick Springfield. Good thing the work papers eventually went through and we get to enjoy the great entertainer even now!
Thanks very much for the comments. I'm glad you liked it. I have him doing "Speak To The Sky" live in the studio already online and soon I will have a couple of Zoot tracks (his band before going solo) to come on soon. Thanks and enjoy :)
Thanks so much!!!! I saw the Speak to the Sky clip as well. Very nice! I like his music from Zoot...and will look forward to that as well. I"d love to see Mr. Songwriter. :-)

That was the start of a fandom for Rick that I still have today. Just saw his concert in NJ this past week.

Yeah, I like him better with his Australian accent. This is a fun video to watch, though.

He sounds way better with his real accent. I hate the fact that he went all Mel Gibson with American accent.
prezzakid 3 years ago 3
He didn't get "all Mel Gibson". He went after acting and in order to get more jobs the logical thing to do is learn how to speak like an American.
