truly the best team in history. the 72 Dolphins perfect season was overrated, only beating two teams with a winning record during the regular season. Not saying they weren't good, but them being #1 and the 84 49ers being #8 is just dumb. I'm a Pats fan BTW, not a '9ers homer.
As good as Marino was back in the day it might of been too much to ask of him in that SB. He was a 2nd year QB playing the best team in football the last few seasons in the biggest game of the year. Not many 2nd year QBs can say they beat a dynasty team in the SB. I know Big Ben won a SB his 2nd year, but that was Seattle and Pitt had an awesome D. SB 19 was a tall order for Marino, maybe too tall.
man the placement of these top ten lists is so subjective, The only way they can make an objective list is to set a list of set parameters and score them accordingly. IMO the best team ever was the 2005 seahawks...because I am a seahawks fan and my opinion is biased
this team should've and would've been the first since the '72 dolphins to go undefeated. thanks to some lame officiating that probably miami or pittsburgh payed off, we lost that game to the steelers by three points. the only loss that whole year. this team kicked butt!
surprised everyone by getting to and winning that SB.
Your point about the 23-0 NFC championship game is well-taken. What I can say, though, is that Jim Fuller played in that game, not McMahon. Fuller lacked the mobility, arm strength, and football IQ/acumen McMahon possessed. One need only look to the Thursday night football game betwn Minn and Chi in 1985 to see the difference. In contrast, the 85 Niners were largely the same team as the 84 Niners.
This was most underrated, least respected team in Super Bowl era. First team to finish regular season at 15-1, won 18 games as a whole. Clearly man handled a very talented Miami Dolphin with young Dan Marino. Well balanced on both sides of the ball and contribution from all 49 players. Yet ranked only # 8...they should have been in the top 5. Ironically 85 Bears had the same record but they are #2. SMH
@MrRobspoetry - I don't think there's a dispute as to who the better team was betwn the '85 Bears and the '84 Niners. The Bears met Niners in 1985, beat them soundly 26-10 and in so doing, sacked Montana seven times.
That '85 Bears team was amazing. And yeah, they did only win the one Super Bowl while the Niners won four during 80s, but when comparing a team for one year, that team stacks up against anyone, including '89 Niners.
@222333aaaaaa So the Bears beat the Niners in a regular season game in 1985. So what? You can't really say that the 1984 Niners would have lost to the 1985 Bears because of a regular season game outcome in 1985. The Steelers beat the Patriots in a regular season game in 2004, but the Pats won the rematch in the playoffs. See where I'm going?
Besides, didn't the 1984 Niners beat the Bears in the playoffs 23-0? You didn't even mention that.
@fishpets - The Pitt/NE case is a facile analogy for several reasons but most importantly because the 2004 Steelers did not win the Super Bowl. If the 04 Steelers did and had beaten NE in the 04 playoffs then you can make the same comparison between the 04 Steelers and the 03 Patriots. Logically, the only way the analogy fits is by comparing the 05 Steelers and the 04 Pats. However, in 05 the Steelers lost at HOME in the regular season to NE and everyone knows that the 05 Steelers
@fishpets - really like discussing / debating this. I obviously might also not be right because when it comes to sports, all bets are off. Looking forward to your response.
@iprovokateur Yeah the bears singing the super bowl shuffle and William Perry score some couple of meaningless touchdowns makes The Bears a far superior team...sure.
@MrRobspoetry I whole-heartedly agree. The 1984 Niners were labeled "soft" because they played a weak schedule but in the playoffs ended up beating three extremely talented squads in the New York Giants ('86 Champs), Chicago Bears ('85 Champs), not to mention everyone was in love with the '84 Dolphins and that high powered offense. Niners shut them all down. The Niners set the standard for excellence during the 80s and the '84 team and their results epitomized that.
@MrRobspoetry I totally agree with you , the 84 Niners are maybe the most underrated of all the Superbowl winners . The Bears had a lot of media and press behind them during their Superbowl run of the 1985 season which is partly why they are ranked #2 . Basically , a little bit of hype . Interesting enough , the Niners beat the Bears 23 to 0 in January of 85 and the Bears beat the Niners 26 to 10 in October of 85 . So who's better ? It's always gonna be subjective .
@MrRobspoetry I'm not a Niners fan but I agree with you. The 85 Bears were a great team, but they did not have the balance of the Niners. Jim McMahon is not even close to Montana, and The Bears secondary wasn't nearly as good as The Niners secondary. The 85 Bears defense was a lot of scheme, and not as much talent.
It's why The Bears one 1, in the 80's and The Niners won 4
