From CA here.. and yup, perfectly legal. They call it "lane sharing" here. Several reports were done when they first legalized it and it turns out that what the reports show is that the most dangerous thing you can do on a motorcycle is to stop it. (grin)
CA saw enough of a reduction of injuries from being hit from behind that they are quite willing to accept the occasional tapped mirror or minor fender ding.
10 reasons to date a rider: 1: They have strong fingers. 2: They always know when to slow down and speed up. 3: They have tremendous stamina and endurance. 4: They always wear proper protection. 5: They have the fastest 'lap' times. 6: They know how to work their tools. 7: They love gettin dirty. 8: The harder and faster they go the better. 9: They know how to work around tight areas with ease. 10: They're always practicing so they can become better.
On the motor / highway in the uk looking at everyone stuck in traffic doing an average speed of 10mph, swearing at each other. Then theres me and others on bikes streaming through the traffic luaghing at the car drivers.
But theres still people in cars who try to pull out into the lane and stradle both lanes just to stop you from getting through. All becuase their jealious of you.
Lane splitting in CA is legal as long as you're doing it in a safe manor. It's not illegal, like you're not going to get pulled over for doing it. However, if you get into an accident while lane sharing, no matter who was really at fault, it will always be the lane sharer's fault.
