  • An absolute classic that I never get tired of hearing.

  • what year is this from i know its early sixties

  • for me this not only it brings back memories of an england i loved so much but also the Best lady singer in Britain n Like good wine she was getting better with age now she is singing in heaven fr the angels love her too

  • @polygamous1 couldn't have said it better myself

  • Ah jings this makes me feel good

  • Brilliant harmony, great song, great singers.

  • I prefer the Seekers singing this

  • Oh for a television show with acts like this, wonderful, and they look happy too. What was the last decent regular variety show we had?, X factor dose not do it for me, not enough talent and no variety. i'm over 60 so is it an age thing?.

  • My Dad died the year this came out it was his last "Pop song" so to me this was the best! OK Dusty made her mark but the Springfields where as good as you get!

  • RIP Dusty, what a bright shining star you were, gone far too soon. This song reminds me of my sister Elaine and my friend Anne, we used to sing it driving home along the motorway at 3.0am after a night out clubbing, desperately trying to keep ourselves awake. Happy memories.....

  • I just heard this for the first time since i was a spotty teenager...Dusty..YOUR VOICE..it's amazing! I'd forgotten just how good... and I sang with you and my bro' Paul (who's up there with you)..at Liverpool Empire Christmas Panto a million years ago ..... Barry (Ryan)xx

  • When was this released- about 1963?

  • Comment removed

  • One "micrrophone" & they all crowed around it, back & forth!! Fantastic.

Little did "Dusty" know that in a year or so, She would "Explode" into a

"Super Star", an "Icon", never to be replaced!

RIP Dusty. You will always be remembered, in our hearts.

  • Dusty Springbok as we called her somehow made life growing up wonderful. We had this disc, and played it hundreds of times. She was so wonderful. Believe "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" was on the flip side, another great song, but then anything was with Dusty singing it.

  • @neil03152 Hi there, I have an original UK single No 326557BF, the "b" side is a track called The Johnson Boys written by Paul Campbell. Hope this helps? Regards Hillfold.

  • @hillfold

no prob with the info - must be early onset of senile dementia on my part- many many thanks. perhaps Silver Threads was on an EP so answers on a postcard pl.!!

  • Respond to this video... Great video, good to actually see them performing live.

  • Dusty was really Mary O Brien, of Irish extraction I believe

  • Terrific Trio.

    Bird on Wings.

  • This really is a cracker.I have loved it for SO many years.

  • Wonderful, this was my favourite childhood song. I was in awe of Dusty then and still am. She was so beautiful.

  • Great

  • They were a great act. Dusty was the star, but their ahrmonies were very nice.

  • she was/is rthe best female singer this country has EVER produced

  • IT WAS LOVELY HEARING THAT SONG AGAIN. ALSO SAD THAT DUSTY PASSED AWAY AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE. WHILST SHE WAS GOING THROUGH THIS DIFFICULT TIME, LINDA MCCARTNEY WAS VERY SUPPORTIVE (HAVING HAD BREAST CANCER) WHEN SHE PASSED AWAY DUSTY IT SEEMS LOST THE WILL TO LIVE. STILL WITH SONGS LIKE THIS, HER MEMORY WILL LIVE ON. RIP LINDA AND DUSTY.

  • Great old video!!..I remember this song so well from my early years!!..brings a lump to my throat!!!

  • Dusty Springfield at her best - sad, sad loss

  • RIP Dusty. Beautiful voice consumate professional.sadly missed and always will be.

  • Tom was the songwriter for The Seekers if I remember right.

  • Loved this song from the first time I heard it all those years ago.

    Often copied never bettered.

  • Notice how in this live performance, very similar to live performances by The Seekers Dustys natural accent, like Judiths comes through.

Absolutely timeless music/songs amazing to think nearly 50 years old.

I think its worth noting that an awful lot of todays youngsters like this sort of music as well

  • Timeless, unlike music of today.

  • @lordofthemanor67 Oh yes

  • Amazing watching this. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • bloke on the left is right dirty wind up, notice when Dusty flinches when he touches her arse.

  • They could sing this in your front room, and it would still sound just as good,Dusty's magical voice clear as crystal, and the great harmonies, miss Dusty so much.

  • To think I used to bunk of school just to listen to this song and others like it, now I bunk off work to do the same thing.

  • I am gonna play this song every day as it reminds me of my beloved brother stephen hiscott who passed away on the 4th of july 2011 xxxxxx

  • @selseyball I'm sorry for you. My brother passed away 27th of june 1997, way yo early.

  • @selseyball So very sorry to hear about your brother.

  • @selseyball R.I.P. Stephen... this song reminds me of my childhood and my late parents ....xx

  • @rosie15952 It's funny how a great song make's you think of family member's who have recently departed!! i will never forget xx

  • @selseyball god bless your bro

  • @selseyball i send you peace and healing , i believe your brother is home and ok play dusty and link with your bro. use your 6s sence you will feel him draw close XXX

  • @wilkevwilkev thank you my friend xx

  • @selseyball :-((

  • My Auntie Phillys was a total lesbo - a wonderful woman. More like an Uncle to me to tell you the truth...

She wondered when I caught an eel down the small river from her. She lived many happy years with her "friend" there.A wonderful person. Ladytron,

    watch?v=z_BSfkTFQ4M

  • leave my arse alone boys, says Dusty....

  • I have loved this song for many many years. You can actually hear the words. This is real music to the ears. They were a great group.

  • More Seekers, watch?v=Mpd_9l9w4RI

  • The Sekers were many years latter, it is said, but who knowns what songs were being sung Austrailia in Melbourne in late 1950's. Barbershop-like?

  • Already Dusty was developing that unique solo sound of hers...

  • Taking nothing away from the much revered Springfields, Australian group The Seekers did a great job of Island Of Dreams here on Youtube

  • @forsburgers

    The Seekers are brilliant,

    watch?v=4Ga9Bs4fzSY

  • Great song!

  • An inspiring song that touches something personal in each of us. The chord changes are splendidly haunting.

  • What a lovely song and what terrific harmony. First heard it in 1961 when I was at Kings College, Durham University, UK and as a poor student, I could not afford to buy the record. So I would thrill every time I heard it on the radio. Now thanks to you kind post, I can hear it again and again, any time. Wonderful memories. Thanks

  • Punchy song well performed. Dusty should have remained with the group rather than going sole...she might have then been still alive today!

  • they sound pretty good ..... that guy on the right looks like he has a thin plastic mask on

  • @frizzlefrap

    That is Dusty's brother.

  • The reason why Dusty spiralled into a black hole of substance abuse and domestic violence, Colindominy, had to do with the fact she was not straight. Had she grown up in more enlightened times, maybe she would have led a happier life. Then again, the sweetness and sadness of her voice would have probably disappeared without the bigotry she had to endure...

  • You're so right Colindominy. The Springfields were a mighty talented group of people and Dusty blossomed as a solo artist but she never had the soaring vocal talents of Judith Durham, surely one of the greats of this decade. I wonder if The Springfields aimed this at the U.S. market as the 'twang' is so accented it is almost nasal. I love The Springfields but I, too am with the Seekers on this one.

  • @forsburgers

"I wonder if The Springfields aimed this at the U.S. market as the 'twang' is so accented it is almost nasal."

All English singers sang with American accents at the time, until the Beatles came along who sang with Liverpool accents - which is nasally.

In a southern English accent, sing, "save the larst darnce for me". It sounds ridiculous. Liverpudlians had no such hadicap. :)

  • Awe Dusty ,,, you went away too soon

  • i cant believe 6 people dislike prob.love X factor manufactured rubbish

  • Dusty was SO : humble, sweet, talented, sensitive. Talented with a god-given singing voice. How sad that she befell to her later substance-abuse + related illnesses. It seems that so often the BEST talent gets undeservingly afflicted - ultra-talented artists of such-sweet deep-inside character. Take the Matchless Brian Wilson & his hell of the late 60s & even more so in the mid 70s to the mid 80s. But he was lucky - he was spared, he recovered - & look at the ace music he's given us since 2000

  • Wow Dusty looks great here.

  • Wo bekomme ich die Noten von dem Lied her?????

  • Dont they look cool...love it

  • i think her brother on the left ate a hambuger with onions for lunch.

  • Just a point in 1961 "Gay" meant happy! Just thought I should point this out.

  • As an aside, notice Dusty looking suddenly uncomfortable at times. Because she was being hit on the bum by the bloke on the left by his fret and hand - very, very naughty boy! If only he knew that she is supposed to bark up another tree, or did he?

  • @yippitydodah

She must have a very high bum then. :)

  • @yippitydodah

Dusty barked up two trees. :)

  • @NearAbbeyRoadOK. one and a half at a push, ok one, she was totally sapphic. I am happy with that, and I sense you are as well. Praise Dusty the singer, even if her chuff was reduandant apart from toys. It is better these days for said people, not many of us mind, especially in Europe. Come to Europe to be gay, but don't chat me up, nor accusing when I turn you down as a some sort of psychological denier, and all that gay crap talk. All the best anyways, gays, these days, praise, cheeky fucks.

  • Absolutely stunning harmonies..such talent..brilliant.

  • Is this an intentional take off of a country western style. I love this song even though they aren't performing how I remember. Makes me want to grab a cowboy hat and shout "Yeee Haaaa".

  • @pragnerp

No US. British folky music merging into pop at the time.

  • @TheOmnibot Well spotted mate, I think irony is a bit beyond ajmab.

  • Wonderful harmony.

Hair spray and leering brylcreemed backers.

    Right on.

  • @TheOmnibot - I posted because whether joke or not his silly comments insulted a great song. Looks like you fell for me being serious...mate

  • @ajmab15 You really are a doughnut mate. Can't you see the irony when I say "Why can't people sing wonderful, innocent songs in beautiful voices?"

You've been had three times.1) Yes I was joking and 2) yes I think it's really a wonderful, innocent song - sung beautifully.

    3) You cannot fall for someone being serious.

  • I used to listen to them on the Colgate Palmolive hit parade back in the '60's. They're great!

  • Still gorgeous,,I just love it, always have.

  • So basic and so great. Can't behind effects like today.

  • Isn't it just "Far, far away from the mad rushing crowd"? That's what it says if you look up the lyrics of the song on the internet.

  • @ajmab15 Doh!!!!

  • Typical Cold war propaganda - "Far, far away from the mad Russian crowd" is a slur on the proletariat, The "Island of Deams" is clearly an offshore tax haven for the bourgoisee. Why can't people ever sing wonderful, innocent songs in beautiful voices? And where is my medication, ffs?

  • @andygermaine ,,,,,,you make I chuckle very muchly!!

  • Loved this song as a child, and love it now.

  • LOOKS, VOICES, TALENT!

DUSTY, A "Super Star" Being Born Here!!

  • God, Do I Love "Dusty" or What!!!!

  • Those were the days of "Two Way Family Favourites" every Sunday Lunchtime on BFN here in Germany. After that "The Clitheroe Kid". :-)Michael Wever

  • Already A SUPER STAR!! DUSTY Didn't Know Yet, But She Would Find Out

A Couple Of Years Later! RIP Dusty

  • Super Song !

  • You can not help but enjoy this singing and song.

  • The one mike thing sort of creates a synergy between the members of the group...as opposed to moden rock groups scattered all over the stage..... but at first Dusty does seem a little annoyed.

  • @notsuretwo

In those days the bands had to group together to get in shot as the large cameras had no zoom lens' with only a few of them about. Not like today with tiny hand held jobs all over with massive zooms.

Dusty is being hit on the back by the guitar. He brother pulls her back by a nudge as she leans too far forward at one point.

  • love this prob not quite old enough to really remember it but reminds me of my mum who passed away 6 years ago she was a huge dusty fan just 1 question about yhis vid does anyone else think that dusty seems uncomfortable between the 2 guys i know 1 is her brother

  • Back on 18 March 1982 my wife was giving birth to our daughter at Newport Isle of Wight hospital. Some workers outside had a radio going and this song was played 30 minutes before our daughter was born. It was a very special song, played on a special occaision completely unbeknownst to the workmen Our lovely daughter is 29 tomorrow is getting married this year and gave us a beautiful grandson 18 month ago -how time flies

  • This is sucha lovely song and my boss is the beautiful Mike Hurst on the left. He is amazing and has been such an inspiration to me ever since i met him. He has taught me so much and can always make me smile. Lots of time respect and love for Mike Hurst! :) xxxx

  • Had a real soft spot for the verse - "Far far away...." we moved to Aust. 5 years later. As far as putting the girls in an order - Helen, Judy, Pet, Dusty & Sandie( had a kid crush on them all - well maybe not Helen! ) the one thing that Dusty had above the others was SOUL....just ask Martha, Gladys & Aretha. right on !

  • how beautiful it is to hear a song without all the shite that's generated from computers. this is a fine example of pure and simple, yet stunning vocals from the heart, without all the gimmicks. bless you springfields, it's certainly a lesson for the 21st generation to take heed of.

  • God, Dusty Was So Young & Beautiful As Always! I Love How They Croud Around The "mike" Then They Start Swaying!!

Dusty, Can't Get Enough Of Her.

  • Great song for ANY day. I'd love for folk songs - actual singing - to make a resurgence.

  • @IrisMG : Couldn't agree more. I still like a bit of good hard rock, but the older I get, the more I find I prefer proper singing (with feeling, REAL feeling, not just wandering all over the melody till it's totally lost), backed by just a few instruments (proper ones, not synths), preferably acoustic. BTW, if you like this style of singing: ever listened to some early Gallagher & Lyle? Check out Mrs Canatelli's, Willie, Seeds of Change ... all on here somewhere.

  • Have to disagree there ...none have the range or clarity of J. Durham but anyway all damn good.

  • God, I can't stop watching this!

Dusty so beautiful and with the Voice of an Angel.

  • "I wandered the streets and the GAY crowded places". How prophetic and sad. The very first words of one of her very first hit songs. RIP Dusty.

  • Dusty was absolutely brill but no one ever has topped Judith Durham.

  • @bazthehandyman Its very close but I rate Helen Shapiro number 1 followed by Judy Durham Pet Clarke Dusty and Sandie Shaw

  • To say "Get another microphone"......then you don't realise that this sound comes from meeting at the mic which was the proffesional way of bringing harmony together.

  • Wow.....awesome!!.....magic sound.

  • A very long time ago, but I still love it!!!!!!

  • Great song for the day...

  • Beautiful!

  • Talent. Pure talent. Simple

  • Love this song.

  • Love this song..

  • Love it , Love it, wonderful

  • Pure nostalgie, mooi toch!

  • got to love Dusty...........

  • So simple and beautiful. What lovely songs Tom Springfield wrote, and sang. No need for the pyrotechnics you see today; just plain, simple singing. Utterly lovely.

  • @pauline5248 i agree with you ,,,, cried when i listened to this song ,,, so much lovely memories and hey , i,m not a soppy person honest

  • Comment removed

  • the guy on the left looks a bit dizzy from the hairspray fumes

  • this actually looks to be about 1962 or 1963..great song.

    underrated group

  • She rules the song wonderfully

  • Bear in mind this is 1961 everything was single track mono sharing a mic was the norm far better and realist that the computer generated x factor crap we have today.. dusty as ever gorgeous and bang on pitch as tom and mike nothing fake here just pure harmony and a joy to behold the worlds a sadder place without her ...

  • @TheTruckman2010 Very well-put! I've loved Dusty ever since this group had their hit "Silver Threads"....her death was a loss for all of us who love good music.

  • @TheTruckman2010 sad to hear she passed away, such a gorgeous voice.....

  • @TheTruckman2010

It was 1963, not 1961. MIke Hurst is on the left. He became a big record producer, with many hits.

  • @TheTruckman2010: 100% concur re your comments + the mega-talented musical virtues of The Springfields. This song was a smash for The Springfields .. but Tom actually wrote the song for his good pal, Athol Guy of the uber-famous Australian Folk-Group, the Seekers, if angelic Judith Durham is to be believed. Both of these groups' song versions are SUBLIME to the ear. But, Judith really was THE ONE who 'carried' The Seekers' - her voice was 100% A-Grade crystal. Dusty : I'd say 95%, side-by-side.

  • @TheTruckman2010:One more offering - before I go. You cognisantly refer to the effective old 1961 recording-studio technique of everyone - ALL the singers - lead + multi-background harmonies .. the lot - gathered around a single mike suspended down from above at just the HEIGHT from the singers' heads - making their THROATS face fully upward &, clear. THAT was the GREAT, legendary Brian Wilson's studio secret, as well - right thru'out the 60s. No wonder the Beach Boys Harmonies are priceless.

  • Pure class.

  • just fantastic...

  • Tom Springfield was so talented and wrote some beautiful melodies, including this. But Dusty shone like a star..

  • Listening to Dusty makes me realise how lucky we were to grow up in the 60s, with a seemingly unending flow of really talented musicians and singers.

  • This is Milke Hurst on the left. Tim Field had left the group by then

  • Ich liebe Dusty Springfields Stimme!

  • I think the Seekers studio version is better than the Springfields version because the Springfields studio version had the annoying string accompaniment. This live version however is better than both of the studio version, even though it is less sound quality. Anyone else agree?

  • @AcademicChallenger When first seeing this clip, I also did a ranking of all three recordings you mention, and yes, I'm definitely 100% in agreement with you.

  • @AcademicChallenger Not a chance! The Springfields versions win easily over the Seekers.

  • seekers version was great but dustys voice is to die for

  • Some funny looks for the guys from Dusty

Come on guys, give the lady some room...get another microphone ffs !

  • Mais c'est tout simplement génial !!!

Number ONE on Radio Bon Esprit 1512 Khz somewhere in Paris ...

  • love this great posting

    kind regards

  • Perfection

  • brilliant song xxxx

  • Who is the author and who is the composer of this song ?

  • @yaakov4041 The man on the right.

  • @andygermaine

Thank you very much. According to wikipedia his name is Mike Hurst.

  • foresburgers-i too had a problem in deciding which was the better version seekers,or springfields , a mate in aus did me a tape where a verse was done by seekers, then springfields etc to the end still couldnt decide, just loved them both ,now lost tape,so will never really make up my mind, all i know is they were two of the most tallented groups ever, in i hasten to add my humble opinion

  • What a gem

  • Does anyone know what happened to the two boys after Dusty left? and was one Dustys brother?

  • @Usurped Yes Dan O'brien (Tom Springfield) was her brother. He wrote a couple of hits for The Seekers. The other guy Tim Feild was an author of more than a dozen books about Sufism and spirituality.

  • @dunbunter Hi Thanks! I though one was her brother, I saw then in concert in the 60's but Dusty had left then if I remember correctly, but they were great singers!

  • Not sure whether I prefer this version or The Seekers. Both A1

  • Dusty was probably the best female popular singer ever.

  • Strange how an old sow like Susan Boyle gets over 100 million views singing someone elses tune yet this has only has178k views. Shameful if you ask me.

  • Dusty's voice was so beautiful, we lost a really good, talented singer when she died!

  • @Random22222y How about one of if not the greatest female singers ever...certainly by 1965-68 whenshe was at her peek imo

  • @tinker1960 Certainly. You know I read somewhere that it was artists like Dusty Springfield who paved the way for future female artists.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for posting ...wonderful ... all unplugged ...great harmonies lovely progressions...these skills are being lost. No hard edges here !

  • Man, Tom was such a great songwriter (check out all of the hits by The Seekers), but Dusty seems a bit out of character here. She must have felt like a caged tiger or something singing this kind of stuff. We should all be thankful that she didn't pursue the folk music career route!

  • I know the gal is Dusty, Which of the guy's is Tom Springfield?

  • @4thstooge Tom is the one standing on Dusty's left (our right).
