Ah, great to see the rabble all worrying about a few dollars more a month in gas bills. They'll sell their nice, comfy, safe SUV at a big discount to buy an over priced econobox death trap that never pays out. Typical economic stupidity that one can always count on from the masses. Detroit and the Ad Agencies will love it. Think of all the energy it takes to stamp out a new vehicle. All the additional resources that get consumed. Nobody ever considers that when they want to go "green".
You can Kiss Suvs GoodBye,Americans!5$ for a gallon u think is much?In Europe we pay 10-12$/per gallon, today! And as u see,we`re not dead!Yet.So, as Europeans can drive fuel efficient cars,u can drive too!And as I sayed, a 10$ per gallon isn`t much.Maybe 25$ per gallon will be much!
You have to remember what Dick Cheney said: "The American way of life in non-negotiable." At $140 a barrel American exports 700 billion dollars a year to pay for its oil desires. Remember that America has a 14 trillion dollar a year GDP. So soon, at say 200 odd dollars a barrel, America will be exporting 10 per cent of its total economy to pay for oil imports. It will be the largest transfer of wealth in the history of the human race by far.
I've been watching your videos for a couple hours now, very nice selection, and this on in particular is one of the best. This fellow, Jeffrey Rubin, has a clue, as does Jim Rogers and Kenneth Heebner, and of course, Matthew Simmons. Thanks for uploading these. I've favorited and playlisted quite a few. Cheers to you!
Leanan's got the good stuff indeed. Plus her roundups of Peak Oil news at the Oil Drum have been essentially daily reading for me since 2005. Keep up the amazing work Leanan!!!
If the train station is that close, a 45 minute walk, I'd imagine that the gas necessary to drive that distance probably costs less than your train faire.
I constantly hear people telling me, "I can't afford to drive to the grocery store!" I drive a monster, gas guzzling V8, and even so the $ necessary to drive to the store is about 1% of my grocery bill.
Well Mr. Weaseldog, if I can play amateur sociologist I would say decades of advertising about the fun and excitement of driving finally wore off. It turns out that most driving is not done on a dry lake bed at 90 mph or on carless streets though a long line of inexplicably green lights. It turns out driving is a miserable, stressful slow crawl through traffic and stop lights. Oh, I almost forgot the massive expense as well. Give your lovely wife all the best from me.
i hate cars
glad to see them go

The moneygrabbers are not going to get off the road, use transitsystems, or consume less oil.
Theyre so "go green" yet they are the biggest resource wasters and polluters.

News anchors that made a comfortable six figures, don't see this issue in the same light that most Americans do.
They don't have to choose between food and gas. they don't understand in their gut, what it is like to make these decisions.
Before the auto, only rich people that had servants, horses and carriages could afford to live a respectable distance away from their workplace.
I'm now looking at replacing my old Trek 1100 with a new, just to cut out the mile drive to the train station.

Mile drive to the train station? LOL. Are you joking?
danieleriskay 3 years ago
I'm not sure of the distance. It's a 45 min walk.
My wife freaks a bit when I walk it in 100f+ temps.
Years ago, I got where I just don't like to drive. Something must be wrong with me.

I think the pain at the pump is what is motivating folks.
It's not the cost to drive per trip, but the cost when we finally fill up the car.
Because I've been aware of Peak Oil since 1998, I've been shaving expenses since then, while converting my yard into a permanent garden.
So it's little things like, cutting two miles of driving out my day that I'm down to now.
My train pass is $50/month. My office is across town so it's getting my maybe 80 miles a day.
