A thought from a Swede: If you had one of these tractors here in Sweden, would that be reason enough to buy shotgun ammunition in a gun store? Considering the fact that some stores won't even sell you 9mm ammo if it says .38 in the license (or if it's the other way around, I don't know guns that well)...
@Tjita1 i dont know for sure, but i think you have to use blanks, you dont want to contaminate the combustion chamber with shot, that would cause all sorts of problems... :D
@frackcha Well, here you need to be an active competitor to get a license for a pellet gun with an exit speed above 200 m/s, so I doubt they would let you buy blanks either...
The Marshall has a decompress valve lifter that runs around a track on the flywheel. This allows you to start with a handle as it releases after a few turns. There are alignment marks for the cartridge start.
I use a revolver to start mine.. I have a six cylinder to start my v6. I just pull back the hammer and BANG! it starts! -Seriously- The woman just makes the touch!

they used this type of start in ww2 airplane like the Typhoon.if u missed 2 u can go boom cuz there is too many fuel in cilinders.but what the hell u wont live 1000 years anyway L::)))))
This is not a stupid system, as long as you crank the piston in a suitable position before "fireing" it up. Is it a hot bulb engine?
I remember a kind like this emergency start for aircraft engines.
I also remember some strange thing like this for emergency start on marine auxiliar diesels that worked with a piece of celluloid film you had to lite.
I was under the impression that similar starting systems use on air planes was refered to as a Coffman cartridge. At the Indianapolis 500 some decades past they required self starting capabilites, so the genius Harry Miller outfitted his car with a cartridge starting system and eleminated the need for a starter and battery in his car.
nice..i worked on a farm in england.back in the 60s..he had an old field marshall.we would leave it idling, and go to lunch and when we got back it had bonced across the yard...lol...nice..
I wasn't talking about the Field-Marshall. I was referring to how the Russians cloned the Caterpillar Sixty, which is a tracked tractor, and the GAZ AA, which was a clone of the ford AA truck.
do youy own this tractor if so or a freand i whold like for you to come to our annual tractor if you want to it is in cambridge ohio. please contact me at my page dustinwarne.
If Russian tractors are so much better, howcome they stole the design of the Caterpillar Sixty, an AMERICAN tractor? Look up the Stalinets S-60 if you want proof. Or the GAZ AA trucks, which were clones of the Ford AA trucks. And if Russian tractors are so superior (obviously not since the country was a smoldering shithole since the Bolshevik revolution), why did they buy John Deere model D tractors by the thousands?
I remember seeing one of these in Lynden, Washington some years back- way cool. That same tractor had a special accessory for preheating the Diesel fuel on cold days- it held a cigarette underneath something obscured from view, possibly near the fuel filter (try to market something like that today)...!
There is 2 ways to start a Field Marshall. Both ways use smouldering paper which acts like a glow plug. 1,set the low compression runner to the 4th groove on the flywheel and crank by hand, it drops onto full compression itself on the 4th crank and starts. 2, set the low compression to the 1st groove on flywheel and fire the cartridge which pushes the piston back on half compression. When flywheel has done 1 revolution it drops onto full compression and goes.
You mean the stress caused by the raised pressure from the exhaust gases in the closed space within the exhaust pipe and the "lid" from the tin box ?
I do not think so, because in comparison with the forces on the crank-shaft from the cylinder and connecting-rod during running of the engine, I am quite convinced that the pressure above is negligible.
The tin was quite light ( only about 100 grammes) and only loose placed on top of the pipe.
There is a cartridge starter attached to the side of the cylinder head. One end of it is open into the engine cylinder. A 12-gauge cartridge is inserted into the breech of the starter, the cap is tightly installed and the pin struck with a hammer with the piston at the top of the engine's compression stroke. The blast ignites the fuel and starts the engine.

no, I meant using a cartridge starter. its going to make a bigger bang than normal diesel combustion
mrspivvy 3 years ago
I have experienced this type of start myself about 35-40 years ago when one of my brothers had this type of tractor in a farm in Sweden !
( The tractor itself was a quite strong and reliable one.)
I remember that we put an empty tin box on top of the exhaust pipe and from the starting exhaust pressure it flew upwards "many, many" meters !
pigma123 4 years ago
Had the same thing happen to me trying to crank over a friend's John Deere 'D' because I forgot to take the can off (I couldn't get it to fire).
