  • Thank you so so much! I can finally help my 1st grader at Reed Elementary! thank you!

  • Very Helpful. Thank You

  • Thank you for your response:) Yes, I have visited the Cyfair website you are talking about...still confusing to me maybe because I came from a different country...hahaha. I do understand the concept and the purpose of this method...my husband (who is also from another country) thinks it is a great method for understanding/solving the problems. It's just ... I would like to have answers in hand so when my daughter has questions, I can explain to her right away instead of contacting her teacher

  • I totally agree with NYDIVA28. My daughter is in 1st grade in Cyfair also. I have asked her teacher to send answer keys or some kind of aid for her homework by e-mail so I can teach her better(since I am not familiar with the method)... Her response was...they get those problems from the district straight by e-mail and there is no answer keys to it.... how am I supposed to check her homework then?

  • I understand your frustration. Your daughter's teacher should be able to write out the answers with the window pane for you. This wouldn't be possible for every Math assignment, but you would pick it up after a few problems. The strategies they are teaching in 1st grade can be found on the main CYFAIR website in the Curriculum section.

  • I think this is nonsense! My son is in 1st grade in a CYFAIR school. When he brought home his windowpane homework I had NO CLUE what he was doing.

They didn't have windowpanes when i was learning math and of course his teacher did not send home any instructions on how to do windowpanes correctly.

Who decided windowpanes are a good way to teach 1st graders? There are too many steps, too much to think about on one problem.

  • I understand your frustration. Let me try to respond...

Your child's teacher should have sent home some materials or should have gone over the window pane during Curr. Night. Many parents echo your response, but let me assure you that I have worked at different elementary campuses and all 1st graders pick this up rather quickly.

Why do we use it? Yes, we didn't need this when we were going to school. But it was different then. We are not only needing to teach the facts and the basics.....

  • ...but we are trying to instill in students the important skill of problem solving. The fact is that our students will have to tackle some serious issues as they get older. They just don't need to know how to do the math, but how to apply it.

Knowledge is growing exponentially now. We will have to be able to take the knowledge we have...from many different types of disciplines and apply them to the problems we are/will face.

The window pane is just a graphic organizer....

  • If you could recommend some resources online or otherwise to help my 1st grader master this i would be very thankful. I can not seem to find any learning tools on windowpanes.

  • not anymore... i live somewhere else now and im going to 6th grade now!*dontbugly's sister's acc*
