Strange, whenever this comes on TV... 'I'll watch a bit...' - then this music's playing, and I know I've watched all of it. Again. It just looks superb, and this is my favourite Morricone score. Great assemblage you've made here.
'What are you going to do now, Mr Ness?' 'Think I'll have a drink..'
This movie should have been up for more Oscar Nominations. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Film editing, and it should have won for it's score.
One thing that sets this film aside among other gangster films such as the Godfather trilogy, Scarface, Goodfellas, The Departed (which are great without a doubt) is that the film focuses on the classic battle between good and evil, where the main villain is really the mob itself.
A really high-quality blockbuster this one. A shame that today's equivalents (Dark Knight etc.) don't have this kind of gripping, emotionally involving score.
This movie is amazing, Sean Connery is my favorite character. Kevin Costner, Andy Garcia, and Robert De Niro are great. Soundtrack is beauty. Great Vid.
I am a bit confused by a metophore in the movie, the 2 cops who die both die after having a scene where there drink, here where that dude takes a drink after killing the people on the bridge and then sean con when he is drinking at home why is that?
Elliot Ness was more a product of Hollywood and takes more credit than he deserved. He was at one time safety director for the City of Cleveland, Ohio and once ran unsuccessfully for Mayor. He is buried at Lakeview Cemetary in Cleveland, Ohio.
@BWKAPPA all true . when i lived in my apartment in the "Little Italy" section of Cleveland i would take walks through Lakeview Cemetary. i saw his gravesite all the time. Also Ray Chapman's memorial, the only player in baseball history to be killed in an MLB game after being struck by a pitch by "Big" Ed Walsh.
I used to love this movie, but looking at it as an adult, I hate how it glorifies the FBI and completely sidesteps the fact that that the cops were as villanious as the mob during the Prohibition (if not moreso).
The cops didn't take any shit back then. That's the problem with the law today. Cops are bound by too many rules, and the criminals get too many breaks. It makes me sick.
Bootlegging and the various gang wars wasn't nearly as bad as enforcing unconstitutional Prohibition laws that allowed people like Al Capone to become so notorious and powerful in the first place. Hoover and the FBI were just as much to blame.
Not being American I could be wrong about this, but making it illegal to consume a substance was a clear violation of the freedoms that Americans rightfully hold so dear, so in order to wage a War on Alcohol, Congress actually had to change the Constitution in order to outlaw drinking. And, of course, when they wised up and put an end to that bad Idea, another amendment had to be added to the Constitution to cancel out the previous one that had made consuming alcohol illegal.
@RJW1977 todays society is so much different, from the today. i always wanted to be a cop on the beat. a badass cop, with an attitude...i take i look the other way...lol
@RJW1977 Cops were a bunch of bullies then and a lot of them still are today. They just can't get away with a lot today. Criminals have stayed the same.
@RJW1977 I love the Untouchables too. But let's be serious here. The 1920s were also a period of endemic police corruption. Authority needs rules to keep it from infringing on our liberty.
Will someone try to help me describe the feeling this music creates in us? It's like triumphant, but with a twinge of melancholy. It's so moving. I love it.
I never quite got that line. It seemed like throughout the entire movie, Costner was getting less and less hesitant to bend the rules. Once you push a guy off a roof without due process, I don't see much wrong with having a drink or two X)
True, but Prohibition was everything he fought for, everything he believed in. Capone had Nitti murder 2 of his friends and no doubt would have gotten away with it on top of laughing in his face about it.
Well, I think the point he was trying to convey, wasn't so much bending the rules because he pushed a guy off a roof. It was more of the fact that he was fighting gangsters, and not drinking. He was doing his job, and stopping thugs like Capone from ruling the city.
And it's common for someone to have a drink after they've had a long day of work. For Ness, this was his long day at work. And when Prohibition ends, so does his day.
this brings tears to my eyes, beautiful work, just damned beautiful, love them running into that raid on an umbrella shipment, "they're laughing at us." not for long.
Utterly FANTASTIC! Not just a great film and score (one of the most memorable scores ever, IMO), but this is one of THE best movie tribute music videos I've seen on YouTube. EXCELLENT -- lots of atmosphere and action and yet no part of the story given away -- but too long for a real trailer -- make it two to three minutes and consider where voice over would be -- very good work

EXCELLENT -- lots of atmosphere and action and yet no part of the story given away -- but too long for a real trailer -- make it two to three minutes and consider where voice over would be -- very good work
