@GryffindorGurl - Actually on this album, I believe Andy took over some of the bouzouki duties whilst Donal was playing a larger thing the liner notes referred to as a "blarge". What Andy is playing is too large to be a mandola or octave mandolin unless it's an octave-octave mandolin. :)
love the sound but what the hell are they playing? oK i'm in america but that guitar thing...is alittle OFF THE TOP....to the morn. if ya know what i mean.
karen peterson a country gospel music loving type. but love the irish tunes too!
One of my favourite tunes played by Planxty. I love they way they build the sound from the two rythmic Bouzouki's to the full sweet melodic voices of Liam O'Flynn's pipes. Beautiful music.
The second tune - the one started on the pipes - is Brian O'Lynn's. The third one, where they all kick off together, is Pay the Reckoning. They did this arrangement as the 2nd track on After the Break.
I had just returned in 1969 after a 10 year stay in England and the old tunes were being given a freshing by the great Planxty and other brilliant musiciansm what a great time for Irish music, thankfully it is still strong.
Glorious performance. Donal and Andy's wizardly bouzoukis, Christy's blazin' bodhran, Liam's mighty wind. Man, I wish I'd been in Ireland in the late 70s.

I don't know what you mean but the "guitar things" are an Irish bouzouki and an octave mandolin.

I like the way they close up on faces in the audience - including the little girl who's bored out of her skull :)

its lovely the way the chorus part seeps through, like a misty dewey cold morning and the sun breaks through the mist and warms the soul

the chick in the close up in the audience with the white face and the long black hair is very nice.
the band can carry a tune too

the "flawed" quality of the old recording makes the tunes sound so much better!theres almost something nostalgic about it!
