i read the Solzhenitsyn novel "August 1914" (as coincidence would sadly have it, i was almost finished readin this when the author died in 2008)

In the book there's a character who is an ensign (lowest officer) who shows revolutionary tendencies. When he sees "Cossacks" appear on the front he is glad (due to their prowess in battle) but laments them as a symbol of the tsarist regime. Could any of you internet historians shed some light on what a "cossack" in WW1 would have meant exactly?

@MrVladimir2105 Retard, Kuban' Cossacks are the migrants from Zaporozhie, Don Cossacks have formed separately from Zaporozhian Cossacks and are descendants of Russian peasants who attempted to escape serfdom by living on the southern frontier. Don Cossacks even took the oath of loyalty to the Tsar about a hundred years before Zaporozhian Cossacks under Hmelnitski did. And there was no Ukraine until Ukrainian SSR, nor is there such a thing as "Ukrainian glory". You fucking uneducated hohol trash.

Cossacks has never happened in russia. After the destruction of the Sich, the expulsion of the last Hetman. Cossacks founded the other Sichs, but not in Ukraine, as Dons'ka Sich. Already there Cossacks absorbed the customs of peoples who lived there.
