  • this music is really good while you are working...or while you are cooking!!! I cook the best stuff while listening to this man...If i could i would cook for all of ya so you can have a taste ;)

  • Think my brain just successfully divided by zero, man. Right there at the Peak Of Funk.

  • todioliver ... yep...accents are in the same places. also the "bridge" in both tunes have exactly the same feel. Sounds like MMW&Sco did their fair share of required listening in "James Brown 101". Good ear!

  • steve jobs plays some sick guitar

  • @m2dff Played*

  • Thanks for posting! I looked for this band playing this tune a couple years ago on youtube, but all i could find was an Asian guy and band doing a cover (very good cover). I am preparing to record this tune, and need to figure out the drum part. One of if not my most fave-o-rite tune on this album. Thanks again

  • @nazznate Drums are exactly the same as Cold sweat by James brown, check it out :)

  • @taste4phree...thanks for the info man!

  • Man that was seriously life changing. Wow.

  • @jrr619901 I was just about to tell my wife how serious this Chank was when I read your comment. Amen, friend. This freaking performance choked me up it was so good.

  • supercool

  • I have seen this video a couple dozen times and I am still amazed this crowd is catonic...They must be dead...or from another planet...

  • que grande q sos peladooooo !!!

  • Scofield and Medeski ... twin chickens from outer space trying to take over the world. On crack. I can see that happening.

  • Hmmm, I believe this is a Bar-Kays number called Soul Finger.

  • @mramone

it's no more soul finger than it is watermelon man. It's shares some melodic material with both.

  • medeski genius!!

  • God I love watching Medeski okay that friggin' organ!

  • I love scoofild, but something about medeski and co. makes me cringe.

i suspect they're not musicians at all, just posing as such.

  • @NootronicVideo ... wtf ?

  • @NootronicVideo Ancient Aliens, their cover is blown.

  • @NootronicVideo Yes, Scoofild(sic) went out and said "Hey, I'd like to play before audiences with people who aren't musicians at all, but rather just posing as such. And I'll make 2 albums with them and tour with them also."

  • @NootronicVideo Yes! I see some string moving them!

  • sick! same bassline with "Hey-Hee-Hi-Ho" track i think

  • music excellence

  • If John Medeski was my church organist I would NEVER miss a Sunday....

  • @noirtriptyline rock the church

  • That's a stone groove, baby...

  • Medeski squeeze out the juice from that organ!

  • Seems that this hot woman at 5:15 is the only one in the audience, who knows, what's going on !!!

  • @dockaiser she had being dancing throughout the whole song if you watch closely, since the beginning. and yes, she is VERY HOT

  • unstoppable----get it hit it quit it

  • Classic Sco. Thanks, VOLVO440.

  • lol, sort of looks like steve jobs jammin out

  • @chesshirecat2

Scofield was cool way before anybody knew who Steve Jobs was...

  • @chesshirecat2: Scofield does look a bit like Steve Jobs, now that you mention it. I never thought of that but there it is.

  • why is no one dancing? europeans...

  • Comment removed

  • if you dislike this you dont like music at all

  • 3:15 is soo groovy

  • Chris Wood is the grooviest cunt alive!

  • 19 people like Kenny G

  • holy shit 7:01!!

  • 6:05 Billy Martin = Genius!

  • Chris Wood... nuff said

  • Chris Wood is the invisible groover- You don't notice him, you just feel that funky ass funk

  • @bassmaster947 This is true, but if you see him in Wood Brothers or in a video where hes speaking he is well is definitely present.

  • @bassmaster947 This is true, but if you see him in Wood Brothers or in a video where hes speaking he is well is definitely present.

  • '97 eh? I didn't realise that they had played together this early on...

  • @smptefreak @smptefreak The date for this show is 7/11/98. I was there. It was only the second time they played live together

  • @taste4phree I think it was the liner notes to Uberjam where Scofield mentioned how he hadn't had a drink or gotten high since 'a festival in Europe X years ago' - turns out this was the occasion he was referring to. :)

  • Saw them live last night. They spoke to the audience briefly. Someone called out, "Thanks for the two minutes"! Guess they don't talk much? Great show.Lots of dancing going on.

  • This show happened in 1998. I was there

  • Yes the extended improvised solos say 'jazz' ..but the basic groove/bassline is pure 'Cold Sweat' - James Brown...how can you NOT move to this ??!!

  • I remember first hearing this and knowing it'd be an instant classic (for this album).

  • 0:56 shake them hips Medeski. So funky

  • 5:18 baby why don't you do that in my lap whoooaaw!

  • 1:32 HAHA you'd better nod, Scofield.

  • 7:42 major 7th rules!

  • 16 dislikes?!? Really? Who in their right mind would dislike this?

  • These guys are WAY overrated. Mind you, I don't have a problem with jam-based electric fusion but I am getting a bit tired of its being praised for prolonging in a predictable fashion what Nucleus and countless electric jazz-rock combos were doing in the 1970s. Sorry - this music only succeeds in boring me on all fronts. I like to DANCE to jazz music too but if this is "what sex sounds like" then I think one might as well become abstinent.

  • @flouze12 - So, if these guys are "overrated", who would you rather listen to?

  • Well, I listen to a lot of stuff, really, old and new. But if you're asking me if there's any jazz musician I woudl gladly dance to (mentally or physically :)) and who do not endelessly repeat the jam-jazz paradigm the first names that come to mind would be Dave Douglas, Myra Melford, Henry Threadgill, Steve Bernstein's Sex Mob, some of Zorn's Tzadik bands. Speaking of Zorn (of whom I am not an unconditional fan), the only MMW CD I like is the one they did for him but he wrote the music ...

  • @flouze12 In your opinion. I'd really appreciate it if people said that before they stated one of these minority opinions.

  • these guys can groove, that's for sure

  • 15 people had their monitors off and their speakers on mute

  • I'm back AGAIN! YEAH! It's Friday night, it's raining, time to turn down the world and turn up the Scofield groove!

  • I'm just north of San Francisco, an area with a lot of young people who are really into the very best rock, blues and jazz and EVEN THEY are paralyzed. I'm an old fart, 72, and I stand out in just about audience as the one moving around the most. The exception is the Afrobeat audience. If you don't know anything about Afrobeat, check out some YouTubes for Albino!Afrobeat and rock out!

  • this is the real F*&ckin Deal right here. Layin down some sick funkin action.

  • Increasingly, audiences sit like they've been narcotized while the musicians swing their asses off. They would have to feed me a whole bunch of drugs to keep me still while something like this was playing!

  • @jazzjoint

haha, I know. You can see one girl in the front row DESPERATELY trying to dance and you can tell she just feels like a weirdo. Also, they're european...they don't know shit about jazz. I'm just kidding...but seriously.

  • This might be some of the best jazz quartet work I've ever heard. Sco and Medeski both exhibit AMAZING solo work here. Medeski is on fire from 6:45 on. WOW. This recording gives me chills almost everytime i hear it.

  • Thanks for posting this. I have listened to it for years but have never seen it.

  • These guy are scorchin hot!

  • the drums are the skeleton, the bass is the muscles, the organ is the breath, and the guitar is the mind

  • cool .... love it ... john ... and all others ... groove ... love to dance under it <333

  • Hey, Sco's guitar actually says "chank!"

  • Best thing Sco ever did was hook up with these guys.

  • Probably the phattest groove I've ever heard.

  • hahahaha look how young they are

  • medeski is a funky octopus! shikishikiwah, N.1

  • I like the softness of the bass

  • The groove and bass line are pretty much straight out of James Brown's Cold Sweat, aren't they? Nevertheless, super fuckin funky. Medeski Martin and Wood are way better when they play with Scofield.

  • @prestonsam i just listened to cold sweat, and have come to the conclusion that you smoke cocaine. probably not as much as Mr. Brown though.

  • think this a james brown tune?

  • I'd love to see New Rome Quartet play with MMW, that would be an awesome show!

  • @bombpop13,

For years, I've been trying to figure that out too. They all need to be carted off to the coroner, because a doctor can't help them at this point. The only one with a pulse is the groovy woman in black. If she's there with her husband, she's surely a widow.

  • How the hell are all those people remaining seated

  • @bigdumbchimp because they´re morons

  • This music twists my insides into funky shapes.

  • if no part(s) of your body is/are moving during this, you have no soul.

  • DAMN! it just cant get any better than this.

  • I'd like to see them play with New Rome Quartet...that would be awesome

  • Sco is just what M,M, & W need

  • @pretorious700 how do you mean?

  • @thedwork I always thought their trio work was a little unfocused.

  • Billy Martin and Chris Wood look bored.

  • @bogmon no. they don't.

  • sick

  • What a buncha stiffs in the audience!

  • The lady in black, yes that woman in the front row, you're alright! Everyone else in the audience needs defibrillation.

  • Someone in this audience needs stand up and get that god damn party started already

  • My Goodness...! This is even funkier than the studio cut...MMW and Sco are made for each other....Song has been over for 10 minutes and I can't stop my feet from tapping...

  • Someone actually stood up and went nuts at 5:20. (I would go home with her...)

  • How are these people not dancing wayyyy hard?

  • ofigenny chuvak.uvajau

  • They are Dutch and in awe, Notice a performance like that is possible at the North Sea Jazz festival, You need a listening audience too for such a performance. Compare it to the stuff from Lugano. Quality wise this tops it. Thank you Dutchies for having your ears open.

  • Could that crowd be any more freekin' COMATOSE during this bad-ass performance??? Only the one chick in black in the front row is truly grooving. What's up with that??

  • @fiveweelo everyone was probably so entranced with the music, all they could do is sit there in total awe

  • The bass playing is just absolutely slammin'!!!

  • I #"%"#% LOVE THIS

  • I wish that Sco would play clean more, that chorus thing kinda blows.

  • To me this is THE essence of music!

  • Scofield has no business wearing socks with those sandals

  • @gillsmcgee411: Good thing his taste in music is markedly better than his taste in apparel. :-)

  • @gillsmcgee411 Well, even he will appear one day with his dick in the wind it will be jazz!

  • @gillsmcgee411 Its all part of the funk.

  • @gillsmcgee411 scofield can wear whatever he pleases on his feet to keep those licks coming

  • @gillsmcgee411

Those sock filled mandals are actually funk groove generators aka FGG's

  • @gillsmcgee411 oh noooo you caught him in the act!

  • @gillsmcgee411 Yeah, that he doesn't care what the likes of you think speaks well of him

  • 6:45 medeski...

  • what's the effect john uses????? I cant figure out if it is a detuner, or a high-speed tremolo .....

  • @simonjaramillo It's a LOT of chorus. He has the effect level on his Chorus pedal turned all the way up. He mentions it here, watch?v=l5RLisMAl2Q

  • Am I crazy or does the band arrangement, funk, and down to earth virtuosity from each member kinda have a Phish-feel to it?

  • By the way, the chord in the A section is actually D7#9 with a natural 9. So as well as the regular D7#9 chord you're playing the open E on top, too.

  • Wow... talk about masters of their craft.

  • This is funky goodnes!

  • I don't get the audience sitting down...at all these jazz festivals, they sometimes misjudge the act and set it up as if it was some introspective listening...this is more or less funk...no matter how "fancy", it's still funk...I remember I saw Scofield at a jazz festival some while back and when I stood up and started dancing, the audience around me looked at me as if I was from another planet...precisely the kind of bullshit snobby attitude that prevents jazz from being more mainstream.

  • @dixxjamm i think that its all in your (and the audiences) head..if you want to dance get up and dance, if you want to sit and concentrate on all the nuances theyre playing then go ahead, just don't get in each others way :)

  • But that's the whole point,we do get in each others way.One of the reasons why it took me ages to really like to drink wine in my teens was the fact that every time adults around me drank it,they made a big point into turning it into a religious mass and endless debate. When was in a restaurant and somebody started being all guru about what wine to order with the food,it ruined some of the enjoyment of the meal.I say, keep the nuances, technical stuff and etiquette to yourself and don't patronize.

  • @dixxjamm I agree. Jazz is really cool, like when I hear jazz performed it's really wayy cooler than most rock/pop. It's just really wooo in the zone thing, when most other performers care only to impress and it's obviously fake. People are just miscalibrated and way too much in their heads

  • @dixxjamm yeah I always think the same thing when I see videos of sitdowns. Music makes you feel younger. However, if you've ever seen a Piano Trio show with these guys, it's pretty much an opera atmosphere.

  • @dixxjamm agreed

  • @dixxjamm you are very right...:]

it doesnt matter if its danceable or not , snobism is just ... stupid.

i remember when i was on a classical guitar concert , and i coughed , the face of the audience was like , 'who is he to cough'...

  • @dixxjamm spot on dude, jazz is music, music is fun, specially this stuff it is dancey

  • @dixxjamm that's because ur too cool, i prefer to be seated so i can concentrate in appreciating this kind of music without getting, it's not a snobby attitude you ignorant motherfucker, if everyone is seated because the place has chairs and one idiot gets up and starts dancing it's obvious everyone is going to look, but the world is free dude, do as you please, but don't think you are better and that the people looking are snobbys, because you are the trying to be different and call attention

  • @juliovac Of course I'm not better, that's not the point. I merely pointed out that one of the reasons why jazz is not more mainstream is because it has a serious and intellectual aura over it, which is a paradox, since those black dudes from which jazz originated were doing their thang in bars, dance halls, social events, and so on, they were not doing it at cultural festivals or symphony halls and yes they WERE DANCING to it.I wouldn't dance to Bill Evans, for ex.,but this is also FUNK.

  • @dixxjamm But... there's a difference, while I could imagine someone dancing to this particular piece, the smooth jazz in the era you're talking about is another whole thing. Jazz is so poorly defined and it is such an incredibly wide range of music that you can't speak of it in the manner you are. In the 50's, new jazz genres arose, and it was not "dance jazz" it was jazz for listening which allowed the artist the use of very complex rhythms and such. And Scofield mostly plays the latter.

  • @juliovac

wow! you woke up on the wrong side of the bed!

  • @dixxjamm I live in Crete, Greece and many years ago when I was a teen I had the great pleasure of seeing Dave Brubeck play live in a relatively small open air venue we have here. Some 'important city people' were present. Me and some friends started dancing at a corner when Take Five and Blue Rondo came up. A policeman came (!!!) and told us to stop . Brubeck kept playing a one-hand riff on the piano and motioned him to leave us alone... Cool dude...

  • @Wulftube HAHA, great story man.I come from Bucharest and we had the same kind of treatment, esp. in the 90's.Same thing(minus policeman) happened to me at a James Brown concert,he came as special guest at a cultural music festival and blew my mind away(and my feet and voice), while 90% of the audience(mostly middle aged and old farts) stood motionless.I'm astonished how many thumbs up I have for my comment,it seems I'm definetly not the only one with this problem.BTW,Byzantine culture rules.

  • @dixxjamm Holy shit that drives me crazy. When I see MMW, I flail about. Here it's a sea of bobbing heads. They're grooving, but what would it be if they could actually connect with the audience? I bet they're thinking the same thing..

  • This might go on forever. Very funky.

  • This might go on forever. Very funky.

  • I swear that's Jaco playing the cold sweat line ;) MMW killing it for so long, fkn amazing

great vid and audio, thx for posting

  • great angle on Scofield at 2:57

  • wow this is the first i've heard of these guys with scofield. much better. i think a lot of their music is missing something, that guy fills it in nicely!

  • the instruments need a break afterwards because they get to turned on during the set.

  • Es buenisimo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • eso si es musica

  • to much funk

  • So funky - thanks for posting!

  • And more proof that middle aged white guys can get down and funky! Yeah!

  • The entire A Go Go album which originally contains this song is just about the most funky jazz album ever recorded. So professionel musicians just having a blast. Great video, thanks for uploading! Been looking for Scofield playing songs from that album live for a long time :-)

  • the bassline and melody towards the end is killer!

  • Scofield is badass...

  • yeah !!!

  • @mardok100 yeah,yeah,yeah!!!

  • @kot69kot69 yeah,yeah,yeah,yeah!!!! że niby co - skypa jo

  • thanx 940!!

  • no entiendo a los 15 estupidos que no les gusto esto

  • I beg to differ...I'd say that Jaco Pastorious was the funkiest white cat that ever lived, and w/ that in mind I'd say that Avi Bortnick is one of the - if not THE - funkiest white guitar player on the planet.

  • @egyptianminor agreed on both counts, Avi is great; Jaco is the stuff of legend.

  • This is literally what sex sounds like.

  • I swear... if people tried to put John Scofield in Guitar hero... peoples brains will explode

  • Yeah! Very good music, funky/jazzy, i love so much. Scofield Medeski Martin & Wood live their music, that's why it is terrible.

  • Love Scofields' sandals! Rock ON!

  • es lo mejor muy buena rolaaaa,,

  • No one grooves like John!! This is sublime! Nice guy too!!

  • this isnt 1997 right? is it?

  • medeski kills
