"Perhaps the best player of *all time*."

This said with ONLY 4 grand slams to his name. Top commenter is correct.

  • wow at the end of 2004 he had already cut the ponytail

  • the way he was dealing with competition in 2004 is beyond imagination, Roddick, Safin, Hewitt, Nalbandian, Ferrero, Coria all in their primes, Henman enjoying his best tennis, Moya, Agassi still dangerous and Federer beat everyone of them. I really think that Federer was at his absolute best 2004, he was fresh, wanted every tournament badly, since 2005 it's more routine

  • @89Pleasek

and some of these guys have seen scored some impressive wins over Sampras and Agassi (a few even with positive head-to-heads)

    and in comes Federer,

    ..."what competition?"

  • @89Pleasek i couldn't agree more on this. it's the exact same feeling i've been having for years. pity that everyday fed isn't 2004 fed

  • うぽつですー

  • Jak pięknie przeciwnicy w grze, umieją sobie podziękować za wspaniałą grę - wzór do naśladowania !!! BRAWO

  • I say federer is a genius because he is born a genius. At a young age he adapted to look at the point of contact even after he made contact. In my opinion that enables him to take accurate down the line shot even from a cross court shot. Also focus on generating power not from his arm but from his feet. If you look at federer's feet, you can almost always see which foot he use the most on every shot. That is why people who have bad footwork hits flat all the time.

  • lol even in 2004 commentators already said that he could become best player in history. Would they say that when Nadal becomes no 1? No. Why? because you don't have to watch Federer' s results to see he has talent.

Federer isn't the best player in history becaus he won 15 grand slams, he won 15 grand slams because he is the greatest player in history!!!

    he is a genius!!!

  • wtf r u on about

  • You mean 16, right?

  • @69wiwi69 yeh but at the end it aint gnna matter, its only gnna matter who has more grand slams, and if rafa overtakes him hes the greatest no doubt,

  • @irfanulhaq1 it's true it's not very fairplay from fed fans to say "he's the greatest cause he won more slams" and then "he's the greatest cause he's more talented" when his record is in danger.

but I just wanted to say that I am a fed fan not because he wins. Federer is a genius and I don't think anybody will have his talent.

  • Nadal was not even mentioned as the potential greatest of all time untill he won the US Open (9th Slam) and some still treat him as a clay courter with decent results on other surfs

There was already talk about Federer's future domination after he won the 2003 Masters Cup in style (remember he only had 1 single Slam!) and McEnroe (who now jumped on the Nadal bandwagon -freaking glory hunter!) said that Federer could be the greatest player of all time before he even won his first US Open in 2004

  • @69wiwi69 by this time in 2004 i believe fed had already won wimbledon twice, australia once, and us once, yes?

nadal at this point was...17? just starting to become solid on tour with no wins under his belt. he was new, ranked 47, had talent, but had only been in a handful of big matches. there was no indication he would be great because his career hadn't even taken off yet.

did anyone know fed at 17? no.

fed's a genius, but when nadal took him down a few times people were talking too.

  • @nvkhuang819 I said "Would they say that when Nadal becomes no 1" I didn't talk about Nadal at 17 years old.

you must admit that the only time you hear Nadal can become the greatest is when people are impressed by his quick results.

Ivanisevic said Fed was the greatest player to have ever touched a racquet when Fed won his second title.

Djokovic and Nadal won their first grandslams younger, but nobody said they were genius

It seems obvious when you see roger that you see a perfect technique

  • 2001-2002 Hewitt was the only player two win more than one major, winning the US Open 2001, Wimbledon 2002 and the TMC both years. 1990, 1991 (Edberg) and 1998 (Sampras) the No. 1 ranked player only won one GS tournament. And anybody who says he isn't one of the great players has no clue.

  • Totally agree. I mean, he beat Sampras in the USO final in straight sets! He also beat him on grass a couple of times. I also get sick and tired of these people who claim that Federer played (or plays) in a 'weak' era. What evidence do they have to support their claim, other than the fact he has stopped so many of them from winning more slams?

  • sampras was still around when hewitt won, he still had game too.. he won a slam in 02, against agassi. James blake was actually a decent player back then too.

  • I hate how Hewitt does that little chipmunk noise every single time he goes for the ball. No wonder I think nothing more of him than a simple fill in during transition between greats

  • Wow, I didn't know Lleyton's grunting made you so mad.

I'd hate to see you react to Rafa's or Gonzalez's grunt...

  • theres no such thing as a fill in... even winning just 1 grandslam is good... hewitt won 2... its no wonder i think nothing more of you than an idiot

  • Laver, Sampras, Federer and Nadal. These players are greats. These players won (and will continue to win) grandslams and be the best at their game for a long time. However Hewitt basically fit into more of the "right person at the right time" category and rose to number one when there was the chance. I am clearly not a fan of him.

  • It depends on how you define a great and since when are there not things such as fill ins? Hewitt fits this perfectly, he rose more out of circumstance than undeniable and sustainable mastery. Jesus is real, o my look another illogical and unrealistic assumption made out as the truth.

  • well diff ppl have diff opinions, and i feel that hewitt may have a slam or 2 in him still....

  • Comment removed

  • yeh, i love it how people say he was no good when he won 2 slams. winning a slam means you are a good player but hewitt won 2 and was the youngest number 1 player for almost 2 years. most one hit wonders reach number one for a month.. like roddick. Hewitt is allways very consistent in grand slams. he was unlucky to draw gonzalez first round which i think hewitt would normally beat if hes fully fit which he wasnt. Agassi was still around, safin was playing well, he had to beat nalbandian to win..

  • Maybe you should learn to read my comments before you post clearly uninformed responses. I never said that Hewitt is a bad player, I believe that he just isnt a great one. Let's see you learn to read, I think your Teen Disney quality quote will do fine here : "those who can't do, shut the fuck up"

  • when did TMC final begin to be decided over 5 sets?

  • apparently the next year (2005) which was when federer lost to nalbandian in the 5 setter for the title

  • It has always been decided over 5 sets, in 2004 was decided over 3 because of the rain.

  • Also, looking at Hewitt's game, it would appear that Djokovic is Hewitt Mark II plus 10.

  • From watching this it is clear how the game has moved on in even just 3 years. Federer might have been a touch more clutch in 2004 than now, but that backhand is MUCH better today and he has added nuances to his game over the years. Now it will start to go the other way, where his aging body will take away from his game more than nuances will add to it. It will be interesting to see how much longer he can play great tennis for. I think he has several more slams in him.

  • it really is too bad that hewitt is no longer at the top of the game

  • hope he makes the top 10 this year,he played really well at indian wells and he is serving great..hewitt is a natural, valiant competitor.

  • it really is too bad that hewitt is no longer at the top of the game

  • lol tonze hewitt can own roddick but the other players ca not

  • I love how he's so freakin calm, silent and expressionless throughout the match...then "YEAH!!"

    :D

  • i just dont like it when Lleyton goes "C'MON!!!!" on someone else's error

  • all i can say is that he's not cheering the fact that his opponent hit an error, he's cheering the fact that he just won a point. a lot of the errors that his opponents hit are errors that he FORCED them to hit, so it's just as good as a winner.

  • Why don't you like it when Hewitt goes "C'MON!!!!" on an opponent's error? It is a psychological block to the opponent and allows the player to continue to pump himself up. That is his game, he is a counter-puncher; he gets most of his points by consistency. And usually counter-punchers are very strong fighters like Nadal. I mean Nadal even says "vamos" on his opponent's mistakes, but people think he is the most humblest guy but he is extremely impatient with line calls and he is aggressive.

  • if he does that, it´s because he hit a shot that was so good, which made the other guy miss, so..there it is..

  • musicgamer10-- give hewit a friggin break! c'mon is his own thing and he will do it if he damn well chooses. he does it to build confedence.

  • hewitt sounds like he's constipated when serving.

  • sounds like a baby is coming out more like.....

  • lol

  • feds just toyin with this sappy cunt

  • Hewitt doesnt have the power to challange players like federer, nadal, djokovic or roddick.

  • when you -believe- you won't lose, would you continue to pump yourself?

the fine line between being positive or negative is very clear

  • i have to agree with 779...lleyton takes his C'mon way too seriously....i mean ur down 2 sets 5-0 and u go C'MON...pointless i think!

  • lleyton the fuckhead? i never understand why people harbor this hate of certain players. i mean sure i have preferences, but i admire them all!

    really rebel779 thats just lame

  • lol 7:15 ^^ ! Federer is really the best !

  • lovely play from both players :)

  • hewitt is the best

  • Federer is the best in the match!

    Hewitt sucked again!!

    Federer is cute

  • really. Pause it at 7:15. Look at where he is.

  • haha look at that Jump by Federer in 7:15!!

  • Lleyton the fuckead with his C'mon stupidity whip his arse Rog!!!

  • damn the serve at 6:48 was fast

  • she was in the wta tour i guess her supporting roger and not having much time to exercise would fall under the category of getting fat!!u jealous bitches!!

  • roger can do better and should do better. period.

  • And you are jealous!. Roger loves Mirka as he has said today in Shanghai. Live with that!.

  • roger has said in many occasions that he's lucky to have Mirka in his life because she manages his schedule which is a very important part of being a pro tennis player.

  • yes. I'm sorry

  • classic reaction and I swear Roger looks the best in black :D
