But I think it sounds better with a piano, it's more chaotic and the emotional peaks are more intense. Here it feels like he tried to copy Eels cover of his own song by mimicking their pace. Every cover I've heard of it is amazing though.
Special Presentation About Music: If you want to listen to music that differs from the direction that mainstream music is going in, check out my channel. If you like what's on the radio, that's cool but I'm probably not for you. I don't dislike what's out today, I'm just trying to do my own thing and see if people can dig it. The songs I have on youtube are mostly acoustic, but if you wanna hear my electric stuff, you can look me up on myspace too.
When I see him shaking, I think 2 things. ONE: it's so sad that he was once young and relatively healthy, now he's getting older, and has various mental illnesses; everything good must come towards an end. TWO: Despite his age, mental state, and everything else, he still has so much heart, soul, and conviction, and yet he's still "living life." When I reach his age, I hope to feel that way as well. Excuse my language, but it's like a big "FUCK YOU" to Father Time, and maybe even Death himself.
get a ticket for Paris concert in april with the "beam orchestra".really waiting for "that".take care Daniel and always remember.........the world is a orange.
Just 'discovered' Daniel tonight after hearing the Eels cover of this (I'm a big Eels fan). Daniel's original is amazing. Looking forward to listening to more from him.
I've known Daniel Johnston since 1986. I've always thought he was talented, despite his personal problems. Watching him in this video, it's clear that he's not in the best of health. Yet, his talent still emerges beautifully.
Outward beauty is always temporary. Inward beauty always lasts.
@poughkeepsiejohn -I don't know him, (im only 14) but judging from his interviews and songs, he seems to be a very sweet and nice man at heart, I wish I could see him live and meet him, something about him just pulls at ur heart, even though today is my first day of listening to him.
When i watch this, i realize how much i hate the commercial music scene, where music is made and sold like chocolate bars, without any trace of chocolate in it, wrapped in a nice and heavily branded pack. Thank you Daniel, for being fucking true to the core.
Single most amazing inspirational HUMAN in my opinion. Saw him live few months back and he played this. Daniel is so wonderful and when his time passes there will be a lot of sad faces... especially this one.
I dont know people ...he is just amazing ,the way he performs... his wicknesses are his strenght. Forget about the looks even about the rythmics he looses sometimes...he is just above all that...

His genius is masked by his girth and voice. He once had a truly amazing voice, unlike any other peoples'. And his songs, amazing. Unfortunately, he is no longer the right person to be performing is own songs, like Leonard Cohen.
I don't know much about this guy. Heard the Eels version of this song and found this. I agree, he doesn't look as fit to perform as maybe he once did. He doesn't sing BADLY at all, though. It probably means a lot to him and his fans that he still peforms them though. Rock on Johnston =)
Yea im sure Daniels very sorry that he doesnt look like you want him too. Maybe try listening to his music. Then again someone like you probably wouldnt really get it.
It's very interesting how someone might not be doing as well as they would like but you cannot hide Genius underneath what they are. Daniel Johnston is a GENIUS.
Man... Daniel Johnston is the best songwriter ever... By far. Dylan or Lennon/McCartney can lick his balls

Living Life is my favorite song by anyone.

@rikmomentary As Daniel may or may not put it, he has "kicked Satan out." (From the documentary about him.)

The shaking is probably the side effect of the various medications he takes for his mental health issues.
geographictongue1 2 years ago
right you are. Many anti-psycotic medications decrease dopamine concentrations in the brain, which creates a parkinson-like syndrome

Really cool hes playing still, but that shaking is kinda scary. Same thing was happening to Roky Erickson at a concert I went to.
0kappa02 2 years ago
That shaking could be attributed to nerves, holding the mic, remembering the lyrics, the crowd, atmosphere, anything.
He is sick, but Im sure if he was too sick to perform he'd stop.
