I like the direction of this video; although the are some archeological facts/discoveries that should be addressed. Like the dead sea scrolls; 800 yrs of unaltered text is pretty amazing, when you take in to account of the whole "word of mouth"/"Chinese whispers"; which in this case proved to be reliable since the context/words haven't been changed. Well I'm off to see pt 2
Thank you Jesus for giving up your glory to serve us unworthy humans, so that we might not perish but have everlasting life
Thank you because your word is has the most fulfilled prophesies 500+ and right now we see how your word is becoming true.
You will judge us, not according to our acts so that no one is glorified but according to our obedience and faith. People who know you know that you are so real and amazing. You are the best thing that has ever happen to those who truly know you
I've always found it baffling and frustrating that fundamentalists ascribe modern sensibilities on ancient writings.
Never mind the whole "word of mouth" aspect; alegory and symbolism were the norm, plagarism wasn't frowned upon, indeed it was expected, and the line between history and myth almost didn't exist.
Take Any of the arguments they use for the validity of the Bible and they can be equally applied to Homer's the Iliad or the Odyssey (which have more historical accuracy).
That's fucked up. It should be scientists because not only they are heroes the also invent things benefit mankinds. So the bible is the reality? Wtf? And this pastor needs to stop brainwash the kids, errrr.........
Thanks a lot. This is a really good video. I only wish you were discussing Islam. Christianity has been reformed, diluted, and modernized. While islam and the quran are still standing almost untouched for a thousand and four hundred years. Its crying for reform, debunking, and modernization.
@askegg Thanks,, sorry, I should have watched the whole video before commenting.
You know, I recall some fundamentalist complaining about an effort to translate the Bible into Spanish. His comment was, "if English was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me".
Ancient Hebrew and from my answer it shows that the bible's translation should be questioned. At the same time, we have to think about how many versions and how many time it was edited, how many books are yet to be discovered, how many more information are missing, and many other things that render the bible hypocritical in many ways.
@th86stone Sure - if people download, interpret, change, and redistribute my video.
But seriously, it is not surprise the scribes altered the texts - we ALL do it inherently as part of the reading process. We all interpret the symbols on the page, but this does not detract from the fact the words have changed, thus the meaning.
Bart Ehrman has lots of books that are excellent. I was utterly stunned after I was done reading "Misquoting Jesus". Great book, a must read for all theists & non-theists alike.
God wants you to believe in him so bad!! that he only appears in the writing of a book,..i cannot believe how deluded the whole world is...how sad. People ,even if god does exist,..he sure doesnt want you to know it!
irony of his inner thoughts ship wrecked on island only use any book would have is for starting a fire lol id swap the book with a fully charge satellite phone and spare battery pack instead
"I was asked once what book I would choose if I were shipwrecked on an island and could only have one book for the rest of my life. I replied.........the bible"
Personally, I would have gone with the 'Deserted Island Survival Guide'.
Many of them spoke Greek. The Greeks invaded the area first, so people learned Greek. Then the Romans displaced the Greeks, but many Romans spoke Greek. So Greek was the language they needed to communicate with the invaders.
Please specify that you are talking about the Protestant bible. The Protestants removed several books from the bible, so it is smaller than the original bible of the early church.
My understanding is that most inhabitants of Roman-ruled Judaea, Samaria, and Galilee did indeed speak Aramaic--but the elite, both home-grown and Greco-Roman, would have spoken Koine Greek, and many Jews lived in key Hellenistic cities (under Roman rule, of course) in the Eastern Mediterranean (such as Alexandria, Antioch, Tarsus, etc.), where they would also have spoken Koine Greek. So, it varied. But good vid, askegg! I always enjoy your work.
@TheOtherSide100 Or as computers are preloaded with software, he could have preloaded our brains with his holy text. I mean, he's magical enough, that wouldn't affect free will, it would just assure that we all know what he says and wants.
@KrimsonRequiem Its the same thing if he appeared to all of us. That would NOT affect free will as i would STILL not follow him. Of course, thats considering he is any human god we know of. Cause we all know they are fucked up in the head.
@ndjarnag It never occurred to me that Regan might fake support. If I were to utter those words, my meaning would be totally different, and this is exactly the kind of communication issue these videos tries to highlight.
6:27ish, on the note of it being in Greek or Aramaic, yes it is very important. Between any language, no matter how close on terms of mutual intelligibility, there is still lexical gap. Who is to say the greek manuscripts truly captured the words spoken and recorded in Aramaic by the "eye witnesses"? Christians i talk to don't seem to understand what "Lexical gap" is or how important it is, mostly because they're not multilingual... Sorry, just thinking out loud here...
@crackerkiller89 I agree. That doesn't solve the problem of translation sometimes though. It's definitely possible to overcome Lexical gap, some methods are more tedious than others though. Sometimes it's necessary to completely change what you're writing (translating into) to cover the lexical gap, say use slang of ours near equivalent to the other language - but even then there are connotations within that slang which are not in the other language. It's all a bit complex haha
@LJonesy2 Oh it definitely does not. When my parents ask me to translate slang, i look as dumbfounded as them cause i dont know how to. I know what it means, i just dont know how to translate it lol
@LJonesy2, Yes, very true. Also, we know that both Matthew and Luke drew on Mark and another source, called Q. Q seems to have been a collection of sayings in Aramaic that were attributed to Jesus. Now, the interesting thing is that Luke and Matthew both translated these sayings into Koine Greek--but did so independently. And we know this because they didn't translate them all the same way, as you'd expect if they worked independently of each other.
@Metalcultistmike Regarding "Q": widely accepted and supported, but I did not want to wonder too far off the main point of these videos. I might cover the topic later.
Slight problem with the premise - that the bible is the word of god and that true theology holds that to be true in an evangelical understanding of it. That is not true - the vast majority of christians - the orthodox and the catholics believe in the tradition being the guardian of the interpretation of the bible and that is also interesting to explore. "sola scriptura" which is the evangelical position has a weak foundation as a church council decided what to include and exclude.
Why didn't Jesus just write the New Testament himself while in heaven and not have conflicting stories just "The Gospel, by Jesus" and then send it down from his holy throne? Then he could have gotten it exactly right with no misinterpretations, no contradictions, etc. Then when the English started reading the bible *BAM* Jesus sends down a perfectly translated English copy of his work from heaven. Seems like that would be a clearer way to get his message across for an all-powerful being.
@KrimsonRequiem I think it would have been best if jesus/god had written the bible in a language/way that everyone could read, but that language/way could not be used in other ways except for writing/printing/reading the bible. A universal language that only pertains to the bible
1. Greek was the lingua-franca of anyone who wrote at the time, as Latin was in the Medieval. If it was written down, it would be in Greek or considered 'barbaric'; not worth preserving.
2. Watch the 'embellishments' arguemnt. Evidence suggests low-literate societies are much better at passing acurate info on orally- as their lives depend on it. It is still not perfect, however, as any study of recall and memory can attest.
and people think reagan was smart. huh! well guess what, had he been shipwrecked and chose the bible to read, he'd have been an atheist soon after and would find himself talking to his volleyball, wilson.
One reason I resented christianity after becoming atheist was that the church felt intrinsically dishonest. Why is it that after Paul and the book of Revelation that they pretend like everything went happily ever after? Why do they fail to teach any further church history up from that point? I had been to many churches and many sunday schools, but none of them ever mentioned the councils of Nicea or Trent. Now why is that?
Christians can evade anything... If the bible has been altered over time, then its current form is the perfect infallible inerrant inspired word of God, and all that shit was God's method of creating the perfect form of the bible.
If I was somehow stranded on a desert Island myself, I think I too would chose the bible to be the one book I could take with me... so at least I would have the comfort of knowing that the predominately religious society I was forced to separate myself from isn't all its cracked up to be.
I'm still trying to slog through the bible. But it's a real challenge, because it simply is a horrible book.
If I was going to be a deity, and I wanted people to believe in me, I would be making sure that such a book was factual, correct, and had mindblowing evidence of my existance. Maybe something like proof for the Poincaré conjecture, or similar.
The bible reads exactly like it would if it was written by man with no divine help at all.
@MonkeyThatIsLuminous I agree. Why would any "god" write a book so dreadfully boring. The bible is absolutely plagued by scene after yawn provoking scene of garbage that only the most dedicated fanboy could stomach as "serious"literature. The plot is thin, the underlying theme is ambiguous, the antagonist is under-developed and the whole thing ends with a ridiculous deus ex machina. Any lover of true literature should be appalled.
Believing any historical account is sketchy at best due to the bias of the authors. Especially when its nto backed up by independant sources or evidence. And especially when it makes outrageous claims about miracles and gods. I cound not put it any better than: "Estraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" Sagan
My girlfriend's kind of religious, and has referenced accuracy of bible accounts; maybe i'll link her to a few of your videos : P. Great stuff yet again, askegg. Hope you have more time to make videos in the future.
@stardust005 You might also look up lectures by Bart Ehrman on youtube. He's a New Testament scholar & agnostic (former evangelical xtian). He lays out the problems with the authorship/accuracy of the New Testament fairly clearly.
@atheistonly ...and when you investigate the history of the book it is VERY poor evidence indeed. The Bible HAS changed, thus CANNOT be the original words of the original authors.
I agree with that opening guy. You can read the Bible over and over again and still not figure out what the hell it's trying to say.
