@mspaula702 that is an incredibly ignorant comment to make. If you believe that you need to be over 40 to appreciate film and music from that time period you're an idiot with a narrow mind. To decree that only African Americans should watch it is ludicrous and in point: racist. I'm white, 27 and have not only loved this movie but movies dating back to the 1930's ( I.e The Wizard of Oz itself ). Appreciation for film and music is not bound race, age, or any other characteristic. Grow up.
this the true definition of african american essence of theater.the dancing and singing is god like, i love the rythmn. the beat. the scene. the characters, their's no other way to explain soul.
Oh no IM 22 AND I LOVE THE WIZ ALWAYS HAVE EVEN THOUGH WHEN I WAS YOUNGER THOSE BOUNCY THINGS USE TO SCARE ME LOL BUT I LOVE IT EVEN MORE AS I GREW UP
Seems like the majority of posters here are young. You gotta be at least 40 years old to appreciate this movie. This movie is a classic. It's an African-American version of the wizard of Oz. So if you're not African American, this movie probably ain't for you!!!
I'm an Emerald City Citizen in the play we are doing at my school, itz awesome, but they cut out the red and gold songs, wuz really lovin the dances we did with em, The Wiz iz awesome, ecipcially our play.
Dedicated to the deity pan......these people make me sick!!! No matter what year or time, these people will always throw there propaganda in our face.
The only visually inventive sequence in one of the worst musicals ever filmed - but why did Sidney Lumet keep his camera so far AWAY from the dancers? Busby Berkeley could get away with this...Lumet couldn't. Along w/ "Eyes Of Laura Mars", it's emblemmatic of late 70s designer New York, and it's a treat to view and fascinating to ponder the possibilities of what it MIGHT have been. If they ever do a remake, lose Diana Ross!
@liljeff2008 It was groundbreaking in that it was the most expensive movie musical produced up to that time w/ an all-African American cast to boot...& the critical & box office reception was DREADFUL, setting back the cause of Black-themed cinema for years! I saw it w/ a multi-racial audience at a preview showing in Oct 1978 and everybody seemed to be disappointed w/ it. This film killed Diana Ross's budding screen career. If it works for you, great. To me, it will always be a sad fiasco.
@SkidMunro I agree with you... I love it, but its a dreadful film for a number of reasons... the sad thing there is greatness in there, but not enough to overshadow the flaws... But its still part of my childhood... When I saw this I knew nothing about box office and critics... I just saw black people doing something that made me smile as a child...
@icon1914 Thank you icon1914and liljeff2008 for your comments. Maybe you're right; a child might find The Wiz magical (just like kids do w/the original 1939 version). I'd forgotten the impact BIG movies have on lil folks. I was a young adult when I first saw it; bought the soundtrack too. Great score - this is why I think it needs to be remade in some form. Compare Miss Ross's unbelievable work in "Lady Sings The Blues" to the constant freaking out she does here. Stephanie Mills was so missed!
@SkidMunro BUT IN TODAY'S WORLD THERE IS NOT MUCH TO COMPARE IT !!! THE HOOD-DOPEMAN IN THE HOOD FLICKS???? AT LEAST IT MADE PEOPLE HAPPY LONG LIVE THE WIZ!!!!!!
This entire 10/10 incredible.I thought i wasn't the only one who caught the the WTC was the Emerald City. And the Oz sign is really the Globe/Sphere recovered from the sight.I think they should a flashmob in new WTC plaza as tribute to the Wiz Cast and WTC/9-11 victims. That'll be since the 40th anniversery of the original building opening will be in 2013 along with 35th anniversary of The Wiz(Movie) that same year. P.S. Is that Patti Labelle in the gold scene.lol
i loved this part, but i always wondered the meaning of it.is it supposed to be like in the other wizard of Oz movie where the horse changes color instead it's the clothes that change color? or is it like the colors represent the different times and styles in that time and how the trends change.like we went from bell bottom pants to skinny jeans in a matter of a few years?
@blackxrosary I don't know about the horse in MGM's Oz, but I know in this version it demonstrates how the citizens blindly follow the Wizard's every whim without any objection
@InternetJunkie100@blackxrosary and its also a play on how African-Americans take pride in themselves and appearance. Its the flash! Thats why they talk about not having much, but that can't be known. Live everyday in style and use what you've got!
@blackxrosary It illustrates how society is a slave to the ever changing fashion trends and other trends that are the " newest thing" for the moment. It shows how foolish it is to follow trends just for the sake of following the crowd.
@AprilStanley1 , And the foolish one of all being SAGGY PANTS. Which started in prison because male prisoners are often given uniforms that don't fit. Gay male prisoners took advantage of this flaw and turned it to their advantage by letting others know they're available and showing their ass cracks to everyone
I saw this for the 1st time in 7th grade, downtown Philly Pa as i grew up finally bought the dvd / 1 of my All time Favorites, an amazing Starr Studded Film. Still brings smiles and memories.
thanks I've been trying to find this and I wonder why nobody notice The Show Slick Rick and Dougie Fresh use a sample of The Wiz announcement at the start of the song. Yeah you know this. I just like typing.
I love this scene when I see Quincy Jones groovin on the piano.

This film's a bit racist really isn't it? :L but then, did the original wizard of oz have any black people in?
VeryMadGurl 4 weeks ago
@VeryMadGurl but it was made when black people were considered inferior...

@VeryMadGurl Not that I'm saying they are just to make that clear.
