@jfsanin Fosters song are so unconditionally accepted by the people that they may justly be called American folk-songs. Old Folks...and "My Old Kentucky Home" are songs in which Foster touches a note so deep and so true that they would be welcomed and understood almost anywhere in the world....whatever the culture and language. Another such song is Dam Emmett's "Dixie". Oh, BTW thank you for posting this video and asking for our opinions.
And it is quite true that Foster never saw the Suwannee--he picked the name out of an atlas and contracted it to Swanee. I have seen the river--and it's quiet, black and slow moving currents flow in perfect time to Foster's song. A very moving experience for me.
Foster's songs mean the world to me--I just had the honor of performing this and many of his others in concert--he was an amazing composer whose legacy cannot be overstated.
Someone who triumphed in Bellini's NORMA has found its way to the humility you need to perform Foster's song: Extraordinary!
Beautiful voice, beautiful song, world class singer. This video truly enriches our appreciation for great singing and the history of this art form. Many thanks!
Old Folks at Home : my all-time favourite !~

Foster's music shaped my life, he was my first hero. I remember my Grandpa playing
his harmonica as we rode along the Swanee river in a horse drawn carriage with the
driver singing Stephan Foster songs. I've been playing music ever since. I love this, and what a beautiful rendition of it.

@Giovannifabuloso There was nobody greater; the great opera conductor Tullio Serafin called her one of his three "vocal miracles."

That's exactly right. I'm actually halfway through a bio on the fella right now.
He picked the Swanee out of an atlas to fit the sound and meter of the song.
HIs original draft actually referenced "the Pedee ribber."

Ein Häuslein unter alten Bäumen
ist mir im Sinn;
und traurig muss ich von ihm träumen,
wo immer ich auch bin.
Seh ich einmal die Bienen wieder
fliegen ums Haus?
Hör ich einmal das Banjo wieder
im alten Elternhaus?

One of the better renderings. I also liked how the orchestra helped out and backed her up nicely, without being obtrusive.

No matter how many times I hear this song, it always brings a tear to my eye. Foster was amazing, and no one captured sentiment so sweetly as he did.
