ok i got two wd black 750 in raid 0 and one day upon booting up it gave me a blue screen but the two partition seem to be healthy it just that window 7 don't c it could it be that it missing drivers?
Great videos, very informative. Is it better to put the OS on the raid array? as I tend to see the opening and closing of programs is what takes the longest amount of time.
Now, let's say I get a pair of SSDs and want to set them up in RAID 0. To keep my boot drive separate from the RAID, do I just not mess with it during the setup?
I'm thinking about running six Crucial 256 SSD in RAID 0 on a ASUS Rampage 3 board. I have a 1500 watt PSU in a high-end self built PC for family entertainment-- movies, games, ect. Not so much for work (That's my iMac). I know I can get additive drive space, but no back-up-- save an external disk. Is this arrary doable? (I'm new to RAID setup's) Is the risk worth the benefit in your opinion? Or is RAID 10 a btter soultion.Thanx again--,You've helped before in the past and I follow your advice.
@agonalart Its doable but tbh its silly overkill and the controller on the mobo will limit even bottle neck the speeds. TBH dude two or 3 drives would be overkill. Id honestly just say get a couple and then buy some quiet storage drives like the 2TB WD greens. All those SSD's are just a waste of money.
Great Video, Now I know how to setup a RAID0 but I was just surprised that you didn't show setting up a clean RAID array on a new install of Windows 7 and also showing how to install RAID drivers during installation. Nice Back up though!
So this is how I make my bare Spinpoint F3 1TB drives a RAID-1 for my P67 gaming rig; go into bios and make raid sata option, save and exit, load up pc and ctrl+i for raid options, configure drives as RAID-1 (mirror) and select drives, install win7 home premium, go to disc management and configure... Please tell me if I made andy mistakes or whether I should install OS before I raid both HDDS.
so you have an SSD as your boot drive and the HDDs in your raid 0 as the storage? That is exactly what I am looking to do with an ASUS P8P67 PRO mobo. Will do it like this if that is what you have. Great vids btw
thanks for uploading this man you have helped me fix a problem i have had with my own RAID 0 Setup on my asus crosshair IV formula... had trouble detecting a just a backup drive that i wanted to transfer files over, i moved the connector a differant host controller like you advised in your vid and it worked fine after i changed the boot priority order.
holy crap, 700 gigs of unusable space...I know when you're dealing with 10 terabytes it shouldn't really matter, but that's like more than twice as big as my current hard drive...damn
Another top video mate. I got my mate to tell me how to set up RAID the other night, but he beats about the bush a bit and tends to over elaborate everything, so unfortunately my brain switched off halfway through! Your vid is straight to the point, very clear and spoken in English instead of the computer programmer language my mate speaks in! Nice one and keep them coming. :)
Great video man. I know how to do all the RAID stuff, but watching it as if I didn't was nice. You explained everything needed to get the motherboard into raid mode without throwing all these technical terms all over the place. Very nice job. Hope you get many more subscribers.
i saw that you have an SSD for the OS on this rig. but for an SSD, you need the storage config to be set to AHCI in the bios for TRIM to work right? and obviously you can't have it both AHCI and RAID at the same time. so i was wondering would you would do if you wanted a RAID storage setup AND an SSD for a boot drive
once again fella you've answered a question for me in terms that i understand. i've been studying your videos closely for the last couple of days in preperation for a new build i'm doing, and you've helped me select the right products for it. I dont usually leave comments on videos but i wanted to tell you that you are appreciated, thankyou
@Jujum0nkey thank YOU very much for leaving the kind words then fella. If you need an 1on1 help then all you have to do is join the OC3D forums and Ill be able to give you a hand :)
How come you set it up in a RAID 0? Is that just for the video? I have an Asus Sabertooth x58 board and want to set up a RAID 5 on it for storage and a RAID 0 for the OS. Any thoughts on this?
I like the casual and relaxed videos on YouTube when people say their own opinion. I just hate videos that are sponsored and you have to put on a fake smile and say that a product is "awsome" even though you hate the product.
@DjShanghai100 99 times out of 100 if the drive is only used for storage the chances of a problem occurring is incredibly low! if used for an OS then thats were the problems start to occur.
Thanks for this video. really helpful. Hope u do more of this type. Always wanted to do RAID but didnt know where to begin. Again Big thanks very helpful and very basic, easy to understand.
Tom, would you recommend Windows Server or Windows 7 as the host OS, i have Win 7 installed on a RAID 5 4TB array and wondering if Win server is better?
@Daveysaccount not really dude, it just gives you options on 2008R2. Probably options that will just confuse you tbh. All a basic user needs is folder sharing options anyways.
@1timby Gigabit network max is 130MB/s it does that easily. even 1080P vids dont get near that. Ive had my server downloading files, streaming 1080P and listening to music (all seperate rooms and machines) and still never seen any real slow down)
@TimeToLiveCustoms Thanks for the feedback. Then it doesn't make sense to spend a ton on high priced/speed HDD's for a home NAS? Storage amount is more important?
I am thinking about buying parts for a new computer, what is the cheapest and most reliable website to use? I have been thinking about scan.co.uk but was wondering if there was a better site.
@Segmeta Ive been working with CCL-Online alot recently and would say you should give them a go dude. If you go to my forums on OC3D you will see they have their own section. If you say TTL sent you fromt YouTube you will get looked after ;)
great video! definitely gonna do a raid setup once ssd's get cheaper so i can buy like two for operating system and do a raid on those and then get mechanical drivers for storage and raid those.
@ShitWrangler yes mate much better but also very expensive. You also need to make sure they have atleast 512MB of onboard cache. Good ones start from £400 and go up rapidly.
very timely cheers bloke. will the boot in raid and storage not in raid be ok? i plan on raid0-ing 2 vertex 2s for boot and having 1 samsung f4 for storage.
@r6bananaman TRIM is not supported in raid mate so you cant do that. As I said on the video you would need to try and put them on seperate controllers too.
Hey man, I like the topics of your videos, but if you want some honest criticism I think you talk too much at the beginning before getting to the point and it can get very annoying. I'm not just talking about this video either... I mean when people click to watch a video about something they want a very short intro at the most and then watch what it is that the video is supposed to be about... instead of hearing you yammering on about your beard, general formal of other videos etc. WHO CARES?!
@TimeToLiveCustoms Yes, I've noticed... and I'm saying DON'T! You'll make your viewership a lot happier, and prevent a lot of people from switching off at the beginning. Take this video for example... It took you almost 3 minutes to start talking about the actual topic of the video! WHO HAS THE PATIENCE FOR THAT?!
Anyway do what you want man... I'm just saying this for your benefit, I don't really care that much.
@TimeToLiveCustoms Well ok that's your choice. I'm just saying that if you want more people to watch your videos, i.e. target a wider audience, then you should cut the chatter at the beginning and just get to the point as soon as possible. Maybe add the irrelevant info at the end, that way everyone's happy.
@nanquan491 try skip the begining then or are you on a 56k modem?? le the man do his thing in his own way. He dont care about your opinions, not even if you paid him to.
@Pinosen don't be an idiot. My criticism is for his own good if he doesn't want to alienate 50% of his viewership with irrelevant babble. Also your solution of "try skip the begining then" is not practical as no one can now in advance when he's going to start getting to the point. You honestly expect people to start playing around with the video scrollbar for an hour trying to figure out where the actual topic of the video starts? Don't be stupid.
@nanquan491 He wont miss you and your type, nobody ever does. if you don't like it gtfo. Its HIS style thus its for HIS own good to alienate people like yourself. This isn't a popularity contest you know. Who are you suppose to be anyways? the youtube dictator?
@nanquan491 Btw yes i do expect people to be able and use the scrollbar, its there for a reason, its like a fast forward on a vcr/dvd/media players so its bin around for quite some time. A idiot to me would be somebody who cant or don't use it, becasue the fact its very practical. Also a idiot for me is a individual who expect videos on the internet to be edited to his/her own liking, and gets upset when its not. I mean wow, that trail of taught is mindboggling!
@nanquan491 Of course nobody would spend and hour skipping forward in a 15 minute video, nobody would nor could fail that badly, why would you even think that? And your judging his blog/tutorial as a tutorial only, so clearly you don't understand what your watching, and then YOU think IT'S stupid? That's also a wow moment. You might want to judge yourself before you judge others.
@Pinosen I think you're a very immature person who can't take constructive criticism (which isn't even aimed at you), without getting all defensive and taking it personally. I'm not even going to waste my time replying to your long winded messages about nothing (except your psychological issues). C'ya.
@nanquan491 Yes you did give him criticisms and he gave you his answer and that would be that but then you went on and on (because you don't really care that much) like you where his boss or something. "Yes, I've noticed... and I'm saying DON'T!" yeah that's some constructive criticism right there... Yes i know you won't answer because your cant, your arguments doesn't hold up. Instead you attack my intelligence and mental health, witch this argument isnt even about. Have a good one.
@nanquan491 The reason i took it personal is because you called me a idiot and stupid, witch is a natural response and don't point to bad mental health, because calling somebody a idiot and stupid is a attack on the person. As for the reason i commented on you post is i just wanted do give you some constructive criticism, nothing wrong with that right?
samsung spinpoint f3 would have been a better choice to go for they are faster then wd hard drives even faster then the valocie in benchmarks in custom pc mag but i would have thought that these drives with the advanced ears system would be better speeds...
Thx

@aschris87 also hotter and louder. Whole point here was quiet and seeing as this will be used on a network speed was not the most important factor.
