  • Pedro Aznar is the magic on the orig album for a reason HE IS PERFECT!!

  • its not Nana, realy its Pedro Azanar

  • Pedro...jugador de toda la cancha..!

  • Mays is amazing.

  • Seriously, Mays destroys those keys at 7:20.

  • I also have to state that I am a HUGE Pat Metheny fan, as his music and playing has moved me in such a deep and profound way. There was so much magical music that was created in Brazil in the 60s/70s (particularly from "Minas Gerais") that influenced many, yet it did not get the recognition that it truly deserved.

The music of Toninho Horta also comes to mind, and Pat was greatly inspired by his album, "Terra Dos Passaros" (1980), as well as Milton and Lo Borges' "Clube Da Esquina" (1972).

  • Beautiful. People are discussing the PMG vocalists here. I resonate with all of them, for each one brings a special contribution to the group's musical journey, but I feel that I have to acknowledge Milton Nascimento here as the missing link.

He was singing this style of vocals way before Pedro, Mark, and David in the early 60s while working with the likes of Nana, and he was also making this kind of music too. The PMG's sound was clearly inspired by Milton and the sound from "Minas Gerais".

  • @surzen

    Well said.............

  • For me one of the best songs of this band

  • FORMIDABLES

  • @egemenati Absolutely fabulous!

  • Methinks Aggrommerchant doth protest too much...way too much.

  • have to say, and i've thought so for about four years now without changing my mind:

this song is the greatest piece of music ever written and performed by human beings.

pat metheny is, in my opinion, the greatest jazz musician and composer the world has seen so far.

  • . . . WTF?! Did anybody see Pat "pick" that BUGGER at 3:06?!

  • OMG!!! I love the organ.

  • Am I high? No. I never have been. Nana's vocalise WAS perfect, not his voice. Get it? He added subtle colorings. That he strained only added to the emotional quality of the music. After he left, the music was built around vocalise and it became rather sugary and weak. Nice job at taking my comment out of context.

  • i'm agree. his vocalise is perfect, i love specially on 'it's for you' and 'goodbye'

  • The early version is here on this site, posted by the very same poster as this clip, so you shouldn't have much trouble finding it. As someone else has observed, it's really only the head melody from Pt.1 that's present in the early piece.

  • Not the whole score was developed and played in 1978, but the main melodic line you can hear coming more times during the way up like a symphonic theme

  • Happy birthday to Pat Metheny!

  • The Way Up, however, is amazing. A measure, though, of Pat's compositional infertility is that The Way Up, in a more compact form, was introduced and performed in 1978. I listen to The Way Up almost every day but that Pat had to revive a discarded idea tells me something.

  • Was The Way Up performed in 1978? Are you sure?

  • yeah! serch in google 'Pat Metheny group companion volume 1' there you have rare performances live, in audio form you can dowload free. The way up was performed in 1978, believe or not

  • Amazing, thanx!

Have you ever heard that "early version"?

Is it a long piece as well?

  • This is a more felling version more passioned,m with out the tecnology we have today,, is like a passioned ballad for me. is about 8 minutes.

  • Indeed. His vocals added to the music, rather than dominating it. By the way, while I disagree, there are Brazilians who feel that Metheny "ripped off" Milton Nascimento. He certainly ended up in a competition with him to see who could be the most maudlin.

  • Beyond that, Pat's own sanctimony and presumptions to educate his audience have invited harsher treatment. I saw the original quartet and I was there when Naná played his first shows; his vocalise was perfect - fragile and understated. After he left, the music became weighed down and even the song titles became ponderous. PMG work may finance more productive ventures but it has sacrificed quality, The Way Up the lone exception. Minuano, though warm, is an example of Metheny in a corner.

  • His vocalise was perfect?are you high? I love Nana--God bless him, but I've got PMG tapes where Nana's pitch is all over the road and voice cracking--makes me stick to the studio versions.

  • Nana was very colourfull for the group. He makes a culture expansion in the group, making they great African sounds, and forest, for me that is great. Nana was the first vocalist in the group, and his sweet voice moves mountains and birds.

Pedro is another thing, i'm not saying he is better. He could make Ledford-Blamires voices togheter in one Person. The first time i listed Still Life talking, i tought was Pedro i two sections. But i realised readind the cd paper inside, I was surprised!

  • My intent was not to rain on a twenty year old parade but to offer frank commentary on a major bump in Metheny's road to you. I've seen Pat over twenty times - not once since 1995, by the way -, I've tirelessly promoted his music to friends all over the world and yet I never include - with the exception of "Last Train Home" - anything from First Circle, Still Life Talking or Letter from Home. That was when Pat's composing started going in circles.

  • This was the song that converted me to Pat.

  • This song is really just a rehash of First Circle which was just a rehash of Phase Dance. But wait. It's also a rehash of Cross the Heartland. But that's OK because Tell it All is a rehash of Airstream. There's a reason why many people think that the PMG went twenty years without releasing a good album. This "piece" is exhibit A.

  • Thanks for taking the time away from staring down the barrel of a loaded gun to share your Insights on musical form,,,Cheer up though, Brittany's releasing a new album--Enjoy.

    As you were.

  • PMG over 20 years without a good album?Sorry?LOL

  • 1984. First Circle. Band-nerd impishness introduces rehashes with "exotic touches and a mail-in ballad or two. Still Life Talking. Post-ECM production drop-off with an epic rehash, the Weather Channel tune and filler. Letters from Home. A sugary ode to influences with more filler. The Road to You. Terrible aside from the "Solo." We Live Here. A sad stab at relevance. Imaginary Day. Promising but uneven. Quartet. Grave atmospherics. Speaking of Now. Brutal save one tune.

  • @Aggromerchant You have a link to your music?

Someone as studied as you must surely have produced something interesting.

Because I can tell by your astute criticism that you're not at all, in any way, completely full of shit. No, you obviously sit at the very edge of musical progress, carving out revolution compositions with each astonishing effort.

Honestly, your criticisms are hollow and worthless. Anyone can produce that sort of dime-store scorn with 10 minutes and a thesaurus.

  • This is so special because of the rare vocal"intro" which was seldom played live. In most concerts the song would usually start @ 2:44 on this Vid.

    Thanks

  • He is the best vocalist ever!

    Thanks!!!

  • Yes that how they did when i saw him but i prefer the beginning much more than than solo.

  • Pedro Aznar...that's all you gotta say! In my opinion, this was the best formation, the PMG has ever had. The equivalent of Miles's Quintet.

  • ohg that's right is true! is a gold musician!

  • Hello calangodoido, i´m from Argentina, Pedro was for ever the best Pat Metheny Grup member.

He`s Humble, talented and good person!!

  • No way.
