Amazing band, Wild on the Run has been one of my favourite albums for 20 years or something! Like others said, can't believe they never made it big. I would lend "WOTR" to "pop music fan" friends at school and they would inevitably be totally converted!- killer songs and playing on that album and yes, brilliant production too. I thought his voice sounded fantastic on that record and I'm really surprised to hear he sounds just the as good live!!
Awesome vid of an awesome band. Wild on the run was one of my favourite lps of the 80', and I don't care for the Jam Bun Hovis type bands - Tobruk had a much harder edge. Saw them at the Richmond Hotel in Brighton during freshers week at Brighton Poly in '84 (the support was Onslaught). They were superb, great songs performed by a band that should have been huge - the synchro guitar twirling was excellent. The barbed wire explorers were made by Jay Dee I believe
saw this band at shellys in stoke on trent .i meet snake early in the day when he brought a load of batteies from a record shop i worked in he got me and my mate on the guest list .great singer great band
Wow !! Yeah I saw Tobruk mid 80's at the Powerhouse in Birmingham too when I was 17 or 18 and fondly remember them blowing the roof off a tight venue, loads of dry ice and loads of guitar antics and spinning guitar shoulder straps. R-E-A-L Entertainment !! Bring back the 80's
Saw this band support UFO at brum new st odeon and then again at a small club (rugby club???) in Cannock. Good band. Did anyone ever see Vanderburg? Or what about Steel?
Did Tobruck play a full set on ECT, or was it just these two songs? I recall that all the bands played two songs televised on ECT, but seeing that Eddie Fincher is playing in his shorts presumably Tobruck did more than the two numbers shown, if so was the full show recorded?
lol i only just found this due to my College ICT teacher saying she used to know the lead singer really well, and that id probably like them. i deffinately do :)
Great band. They actually looked like a band and looked liked they loved playing live.Bands these days look like they've just finished a days work at a building site. These guys had a great image and fab songs !
Tobruk were amazing. I was playing in local South Wales rock bans at the time and when ECT came on the then new channel 4 in 84 our world expanded beyond belief.
Falling is a rock classic - end of conversation.
V V sad to hear about the untimely death of the lead singer, but this single is a prized posession in my collection - Totally agree with other contributors - They WERE SHAFTED by management - what a waste
absofukinlutely!! the albums production was amazing compared to for example shys first two albums....the singers voice was amazing the guitar solos were crisp and perfect, they looked scandanavian and pissed all over europe, its a strange world when Grim Reaper can break America and Tobruk got nowhere,Falling has to be the best pop metal song ever written...amazing,great to see them on here
Do any of you remembe a band called Bandanna who alo played at the railway on Saturdays? They were awesome! Another brum band that never got anywhere though
Wow , how i did like that album when it came out and i was so glad they played in Poperinge at the Heavy Sound Festival that year ! Too bad they didn' t really break through..
classis! The best times, Tobruk live were such an eye opener for any bands going to see them, it was like " ah yeah, this is how it should be!"Can't believe what happned to Snake, only found out today, so sad.
Thank U so much 4posting this. I have this on VHS Video and I luv it so much. I just heard on my Space Snake passed away last December and I am gutted. That guy had energy and so much passion and talent. Tobruk were so talented and so unlucky not to make it. I dont know what else to say.
Snake and his band were the KINGS ARMS thanx for the wonder years and for the great nights.Never to be forgotten you remain in our hearts thanx for being so cool...From a air guitar hero Mickey b
Snake ! what can i say Ketterings Top Rock Star i was'nt a close friend but i grew up with him & used to go see him down the Kings Arms some times Top Man i heard he used to gig at the Harliquin Kettering & always ment to get down there & say hello before he sadly left us, Rock On Snake
This is the dogs bollocks, been looking for this footage for years. They were a mint band. Saw them supporting UFO in Leeds in 1984. Still got the giant promo Tobruk flag that I nicked from HMV records when they were promoting 'Wild on the Run' album. Best rock era ever, unfortunately never to be relived. Good memories.
I was in a band called knightflight in the early eighties and we supprted Tobruk, Briar, Shy and Trouble. left that area and life a long time ago - never thought I would hear of Tobruk again- did'nt know that snake was dead! Eddy Fincher was the drummer in Tobruk - lived in the same road as me - any idea what happen to him?
yes the railway and also a place called posers in erdington and the grapes on hill street. Brum was a fantastic place to live in those days if you were into rock - loads of great venues
(continued.....).... Snake had the most amazing stage presence - he ruled the stage. There was even a rumour that I was caught on camera during this performance, however having viewed this it seems that is now an urban legend :o). Amazing band that should have been HUGE!! Thanks so much for putting this up (I remember Briar too - my Brum friends were always going on about them). RIP Snake. Tim.
Wow, never thought I'd ever see this. Tried to get hold of Tobruk's ECT appearance for years now without success. I was a MASSIVE Tobruk fan and I was actually THERE at this performance (they blew 'Shy' offstage!).....
Chilled out with Snake at a Saxon gig at Demonfort Hall in leicester in the mid 80s. Was a Big Tobruk fan. Where can I get hold of Wild On the Run. It was a great album!
i had a 3 or 5 song ( cant remember )demo video, they invited record exec's to a private gig, played, and got a record contract from it,falling in love with you being the first single ( 12" if im not mistaken ),snake gave me a copy of the video when i worked the decks at the banshee in manchester with a portly chap called dave, anyway i moved house and lost it,pity,i would have loved to put it on here.
I DONT THINK MANY WOULD OF SEEN IT, ECT WASNT THAT POPULAR I HAVE EVERY EPISODE ON VIDEO, there were some great bands on there and i had the pleasure of seeing Stu and tobruk in brum, they were supported by the band i love briar at the powerhouse in hurst st, it was a fantastic night
thanks for some ace memories with tobruk and briar.i think at that time brum had a great rock circuit and it was a shame some of these bands never made it bigger.i saw briar a few times at the railway in curzon st and tobruk i caught supporting someone at the odeon, not sure if it was gary moore or ufo.ive got a few clips of the ect programme too,and i agree that there were some good bands on there.nice one mate!
hi m8 wow another briar fan, just to let you know Dean Cook (briar drummer) is still in the music business with tenboy, machine boy and tinybluechildren they write there own stuff and are well worth checking out, I saw briar i think 47 times in a 3 yr period many great times down the railway, oh and the odeon was fantastic in brum saw slade there a coupleof times , accept, iron maiden a few times, venom , its a shame they made it into a cinema.
hiya mate.that'd be brill if you got some more ect clips on here.there was a band on one of the editions called wildfire and they done a couple of tunes, one was called natural selection, which i managed to tape but i missed their second tune and i'd like to see that.i'm not sure what it was called but that'd be great if you could do it.
by the way i have some concert footage of idol rich who snake joined, and i'm gonna try and upload some of that, cheers
I loved that series as it was ground-breaking music television, been thinking about this weekend. A Motorhead show featured on the series, do you know what tracks they played?

One of thr reasons that Tobruk never made it was due to the fact that they were well and truly shafted by their management
