I guess the best way to describe this scene is that the writers ate mushrooms dipped with acid, stuffed with angel dust, sprinkled with cocaine. After consuming said mushrooms, they watched some old Looney Tunes cartoons with characters wearing blackface while listening to Michael Jackson songs.

And that's how this scene came to be.

I actually saw this on video back in 1988 when i was 6 and enjoyed it. I thought it was a fun movie and loved how they played it on Disney Channel sometimes.

I think the problem a lot of people had with the mushrooms in question were designed to look like a lot of racist black caricatures, basically the brown skin/rubber-band red lips combo which was always used as a negative feature when portraying black characters. Its just unfortunate for some people who watch it that the designers had to resort to something like this, even if it WAS the 80s and hip-hop was popular. Its more of a question was to WHY they had to add in THOSE features.

A wonderful piece of Croatian animation. It is not only a heartwarming children's tale, but it also speaks volumes about the political climate at it's time of release. (It's easy to spot the metaphor for the Savez komunista Jugoslavije)
