The field model is 160 at the academy I my area, and the security is 190. I got the security model about a month ago after I got two 500's (the persuader and the mariner), and my maverick holds its own with my other two. Awesome shotgun, I got a sidesaddle and a flashlight for it. I'm not sure if there are any rail systems I could put on the top for a red dot sight, but I'll just have to keep looking.
Good evening. At the very moment i have money in hand to go buy a shotgun to replace a side by side i have inherited from my grandfather. So far i used it only for hunting birds and hogs. But it is time to get a new one that will do well in a home defence situation too. Tbho i am leaning towards a Saiga 12. Semi-auto magazine fed. I shot it a bit during a hunt but i would realy like your opinion on autoloaders for home defence situations. Thank you in advance :)
@togashigr11 Well the Saiga's are great shotguns, but a semi-auto wouldn't be my first choice over a pump for a home defense situation because they are less reliable. Not that semi-sutos are bad in any way, but when your lif is one the line I'd raather have something that I know wont have a jam or misfeed.
What type of stock do you reccomend for this matt i have a pistol grip right now but i want maybe a collapsable pistol grip stock for more accurate shots for poilce work.
@069751 I like the pistol grip on shotguns, but a shotgun really needs a good stock, I recommend getting something like a Blackhawk Knoxx stock with the pistol grip and a colapsable stock on it. Also ATI make several different models of stock for it that all have a pistol grip and stock, u can get it with a fixed, colapsable or folding stock
Also, you cannot add on a tube extention to the 88 and the barrels are not the same on the security model vs. the standard, because the mag tubes are different length, you must swap the entire mag tube, The one thing I do like about these guns is the safety, if you swap out with a m4 pistol style stock, you can hit the safety without taking a hand off the gun, unlike the 500 which is better built but the safety is in the wrong place for tactical stocks, because you must take a hand off the gun!
I have to comment because you were off on a few details about this shotgun, they are great and I have owned several, they are cheap but a good gun, you can only change out the stock with the 500 stock, not the foregrip on the slide, the main difference between the maverick 88 and 500 other than the trigger groups is the slide and rails that go back to the bolt, most 88;s only have 1 slide bar on one side going back to the bolt, not both sides like the 500!
how many rounds have you got threw the mav 88? and does it feel sturdy?, im thinking about buying one just for a bush whacking truck gun nothing fancy, since i dont like taking my benelli in the woods haha, and my mossberg 500 spx stays in the closest 24/7 for defense
@CryptWarrior69 Honestly it's my least fired firearm because I don't do alot with my shotguns, so I've only got about 1000 rounds through it, but I've never had any issues with it, and there's almost no difference between this and a 500 outside the safety position
@adziepke100 They don't come that way, but u can install a stock for a mossberg 500 on it since thats basically what it is, so if u find a mossy 500 stock that u like, u can use it
I used this for hunting before and it worked good with doves. I just bought another, although Im pissed with the pawn shop for the price since I been waiting soo long on a background check that they could have done before I gave them 170 for a used one. Then they want to charge a 25% restock fee if I return it. But as long as it doesnt fall apart soon, we'll see what happens If the background check goes through since its been 4 days now.
I got a mossberg 500 from Walmart for $207, +TBI fee + tax. after said and done, $236 and change. I'm a wood-furniture guy, but if you could care less then go for this one.
@werno175 Bite the bullet and get a 500. Watch for sales. I got my 500 for $289 at dunhams. It came with the 28 inch field barrel, a 24 inch rifled barrel, a half decent scope and a sling. All for $289, you can't beat that. Dunhams usual has it on sale during the holidays.
These guns are great. They depreciate much faster than they wear out. I got one barely used for $65. It was from a friend, but I've heard not to spend more than $100 for any used 88.
Cool i got me the Maverick home deffense 12 Gauge from Academy for like $210 out the door. I sold it for like $200 a few months later but it was a good little gun.
@Kidwitha12gauge No not a typo I work for walmart and with employee discount total cost with tax and everything was $88.76 I bought back in Jan. of this year when we lived in MD.
have you checked to see if you can increase the mag capacity.i've taken the cap off one before and removed the dowel rod they put to limit the capacity.
@jesusar15 Never had a Maverick rifle, but judging by the quality of the 88, and knowing the quality Mossberg puts into their firearms, I'd be willing to bet the Maverick rifles are well worth buying.
@miguel89ist Well they're not made in mexico, just a couple of the parts are made in a mossberg plant in mexico then shipped to the eagle pass, Tx facility. But yeah it's still better than being made in china
OK here in Australia You need a class C/D shooters licence Which is Harder to get than just a class A/B licence and this is the closest I could find that my local gun shop has in Stock..
Would you pick this or the NEF Pardner pump?I've been looking around and the Pardner is pretty much an 870 clone that is supposed to actually be better built than the 870.
@SolidSnake4Ever2003 Thats a rough choice, I really like the Pardner Pump, its a well made shotgun, but I've shot the Maverick much more. The maverick is a bit lighter, which make it easier to carry around but adds some kick to the recoil. The Pardner Pump feels a little more solid but not quite as accurate for me. I guess all in all I perfer the maverick a bit more, now thats just a personal opinion, the pardner pump is and excellent gun, but I do find I use the Maverick more.
@NeverEnuffAmmo If I do pick the pardner,I believe the 20 gauge comes with 20inch barrel and 12 gauge comes with 28inch.It would only be for home defense so would the shorter 20 gauge be potent enough?
I might get the 12 gauge and hack it to 20inch.lol I'd be paranoid and double check myself 10 times to make sure it's not too short.
@SolidSnake4Ever2003 I'd stick to 12 gauge, its the best for self defense and cheaper (depending on what load u use) than the 20 gauge. For the price I'd go ahead and chop the barrel yourself, as long as it 18 1/2 '' your good to go. The other option is to get an 870 short barrel online or at a local shop somewhere, it should fit on the pardner pump.
@NeverEnuffAmmo yeah that's true. All I'd need is to get a good saw from Lowes or something and some gun blue if wal mart has any.I might actually get the Maverick because I like where the slide release is on it vs the 870/Pardner pump. Not sure if my pawn shop or wal mart special orders guns,if they do I'll just get the Maverick security with the barrel already short and 8 shot capacity I believe.I wish I had academy or something in my town but I'm in a small town lol
I bought 1 of those for turkey shoots at walmart. This gun has a thick recoil pad and may be a good economical home defence choice for ladies.btw truglo sights are excellent on that field rail.
@treblaze420 They make alot of accessories for it, just look for anything that'll fit a mossberg 500 and it'll fit. try cheaperthandirtDOTcom they have quite a bit for the mossy 500/maverick88
@NeverEnuffAmmo That's not bad. Was that out the door or what? A Mom and Pop gun shop always tries to sell me a new Mossberg 500 Field version for $200 or so out the door.
@rebelraider5 It was a little under $200 tax and all, but thats gonna depend on where u live, an example is that here a field version of the mossy 500, which is for all intents and purposes is identical to tthis one, will run around $250 in my area, so getting this one for under $200 is a good deal, so I would expect that if in your area, a new Mossy 500 goes for around $200 that this one should go for around $150
The Maverick 88 is a good shotgun. I have a 20 in barrel 8 shot and no problems with it at all. I bought it for home defense. It fits that bill rather nicely. Good video!!!
@45calvet They are great shotguns, and alot of accessories for them since they take almost all the standard Mossy 500 parts, so they're very adaptable to whatever u need. Thanks 4 watchin bro!!
always knew mavs. were good guns and ( imported) just did't know the whole story.if they are assembled in the big T thats even better.often over looked good shot gun.thanks for the info.
You can buy a new 500 action slide tube assembly for like 25 bucks. There interchangeable. Then you can change the forend out and use any one made for the 500.
I saw a mav @the gun show in 20ga. Mavs are nice shotguns for the price. I hav a 500 n a 535. I went looking for a mag extension n was told cant put 1 on a 500 or a 535 because of the tube mount. Makes me wish I got the mav instead.
@llarlamon7758 Yeah to get the tube extension u have to have the right barrel, I know a place where u can get the kit to replace the barrel, and the tube to have a higher capacity, I'll send u the link in a PM since I can't put links here. Thanks 4 checkin out the vid bro.
@JohnFromSpace I agree for the price u can't beat it, and u don't have to worry about what u do to it, even if u throw it in the truck bed or wherever, even if it gets scratched, who cares, it still shoots, and it didn't cost an arm & a leg.
Tons of firepower for the money. If you gotta have power get a shotgun and I think the hidden value in the gun world are Mosin Nagants. The average person new to the gun world might overlook it at big 5 because its not very glamourous looking $100-200 bucks and you have a powerful piece of hardware
@JohnFromSpace No doubt,, Mosin will do damn near any job u want it to do. Powerful reliable, and cheap, what more can u ask for. Not to mention when they're cleaned up, and refinished they are nice looking rifles.
@qmachine08 I got mine for $169.00 I've seen 'em for between 150 to 250, but average price is $199, if your close to an Academy they always have 'em for under $200.
@TrailerPark42 Yeah the wty is different, probably another reason it's cheaper. Fortunatly they're pretty reliable, although if u can find a deal on a mossy it's a no brainer.
@NeverEnuffAmmo Yeah I like the mavs and the 500 I picked up wasnt that much more so I just went that route. The Mavs are strong guns and like you said its a Mossberg just a few different things. I wanted the 590A1 but didnt see much of an advantage over the mav or the 500. I dont need a bayo lug if they are that close Im in more trouble then I can handle. Great video and keep them coming. I will have one up of my 500 soon.
Years ago i bought a mossberg 500 bull pup , first thing i noticed was the saftey didnt work , so i took it apart and ionside was a maverick 88 i send it back , i get it back and go shoot it 6 rounds and then it wont chamber a shell ,took it apart and the lugs that connect the bolt and forearm broke off . also if im not mistaken the forearms attach diffrently than a model 500
@glock10mm Wow, sorry to hear it. Wonder why it was sold as a mossy if it was a maverick. There are several guns I won't buy because I've had a bad experience w/ them, even though people tell me that it was just a lemon, so I understand how u feel. I wouldn't be a fan after that either.
@NeverEnuffAmmo i belive it was right when mossberg was stopping production of the bull pup but and i was told they were just trying to get rid of the bullpup parts a quick as they could i belive it had a lot to do with clinton making several shotguns D.D the 500 bullpup was on the list but he took it off
The maverick 88 does the exact same thing as the mossberg 500 but the saftey is in a much better spot for tactical use on the maverick 88.

SolidSnake4Ever2003 1 year ago
@SolidSnake4Ever2003 I'd stick to 12 gauge, its the best for self defense and cheaper (depending on what load u use) than the 20 gauge. For the price I'd go ahead and chop the barrel yourself, as long as it 18 1/2 '' your good to go. The other option is to get an 870 short barrel online or at a local shop somewhere, it should fit on the pardner pump.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
@NeverEnuffAmmo yeah that's true. All I'd need is to get a good saw from Lowes or something and some gun blue if wal mart has any.I might actually get the Maverick because I like where the slide release is on it vs the 870/Pardner pump. Not sure if my pawn shop or wal mart special orders guns,if they do I'll just get the Maverick security with the barrel already short and 8 shot capacity I believe.I wish I had academy or something in my town but I'm in a small town lol

Worked at Academy Sports and Outdoors, they do carry 20gauage field models as well as the 12guage.
Check their website click on the hunting tab should be able to find it from there

I bought 1 of those for turkey shoots at walmart. This gun has a thick recoil pad and may be a good economical home defence choice for ladies.btw truglo sights are excellent on that field rail.
patriotim12 1 year ago
@patriotim12 Yeah the recoil pad is pretty good on it. It is hard to beat for the price, it's a great gun!
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
Did yours come with the pistol grip as well??
maverick19821771 1 year ago
@maverick19821771 Yeah I've got the pistol grip, but I like the traditional stock for it a little better
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
@treblaze420 They make alot of accessories for it, just look for anything that'll fit a mossberg 500 and it'll fit. try cheaperthandirtDOTcom they have quite a bit for the mossy 500/maverick88

@GunNut12680 No problem bro, Thanks 4 watchin, glad u liked it!!

Never heard of a 20Ga Maverick... It seems we have similar tastes in guns... I own a Maverick, and a .38 Rossi (saw you review on that)! Greetings

@alfamax4562 Very cool bro, thanks 4 watchin, always good to meet like minded people!!
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
Nice gun, How much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking?
rebelraider5 1 year ago
@rebelraider5 I paid $179.99 brand new at Academy.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
@NeverEnuffAmmo That's not bad. Was that out the door or what? A Mom and Pop gun shop always tries to sell me a new Mossberg 500 Field version for $200 or so out the door.
rebelraider5 1 year ago
@rebelraider5 It was a little under $200 tax and all, but thats gonna depend on where u live, an example is that here a field version of the mossy 500, which is for all intents and purposes is identical to tthis one, will run around $250 in my area, so getting this one for under $200 is a good deal, so I would expect that if in your area, a new Mossy 500 goes for around $200 that this one should go for around $150
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
The Maverick 88 is a good shotgun. I have a 20 in barrel 8 shot and no problems with it at all. I bought it for home defense. It fits that bill rather nicely. Good video!!!
45calvet 1 year ago
@45calvet They are great shotguns, and alot of accessories for them since they take almost all the standard Mossy 500 parts, so they're very adaptable to whatever u need. Thanks 4 watchin bro!!
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
always knew mavs. were good guns and ( imported) just did't know the whole story.if they are assembled in the big T thats even better.often over looked good shot gun.thanks for the info.
dieselmac 1 year ago
@dieselmac Yeah its a good soild shotgun, reliable & durable, and the price makes it hard to beat.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
with like an 18/19 inch barrel it would be perfect
BALJIT147 1 year ago
@BALJIT147 Yeah they make a security model with an 18 1/2 barrel.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
@xxFRANKENZTEINxx Yeah it's a damn good deal, it's every bit the shotgun a mossberg 500 is but at a better price.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
You can buy a new 500 action slide tube assembly for like 25 bucks. There interchangeable. Then you can change the forend out and use any one made for the 500.
njack1967 1 year ago
@njack1967 Yeah almost all the parts on these will swap out for 500 parts, it's a good selling point, along with the price, dor this shotgun.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
The forends are also not interchangeable with the 500/590.

they have em in 20 gauge

I've got two Mavericks and they are well worth the money!
sturmgewehr70 1 year ago
@sturmgewehr70 Yeah they're great shotguns!!
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
Very true , reason I chose the 88 over the 500 was I am a bigger fan of the cross bolt safety myself , No other reason here .
kentuckycowboy2 1 year ago
@kentuckycowboy2 Yeah I like the crossbolt safety too, not that I have a problem with the top tang safety, just not as comfortable for me personally.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
I saw a mav @the gun show in 20ga. Mavs are nice shotguns for the price. I hav a 500 n a 535. I went looking for a mag extension n was told cant put 1 on a 500 or a 535 because of the tube mount. Makes me wish I got the mav instead.
llarlamon7758 1 year ago
@llarlamon7758 Yeah to get the tube extension u have to have the right barrel, I know a place where u can get the kit to replace the barrel, and the tube to have a higher capacity, I'll send u the link in a PM since I can't put links here. Thanks 4 checkin out the vid bro.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
If you like guns you gotta love the shotgun
JohnFromSpace 1 year ago
@JohnFromSpace I agree for the price u can't beat it, and u don't have to worry about what u do to it, even if u throw it in the truck bed or wherever, even if it gets scratched, who cares, it still shoots, and it didn't cost an arm & a leg.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
@NeverEnuffAmmo
Tons of firepower for the money. If you gotta have power get a shotgun and I think the hidden value in the gun world are Mosin Nagants. The average person new to the gun world might overlook it at big 5 because its not very glamourous looking $100-200 bucks and you have a powerful piece of hardware
JohnFromSpace 1 year ago
@JohnFromSpace No doubt,, Mosin will do damn near any job u want it to do. Powerful reliable, and cheap, what more can u ask for. Not to mention when they're cleaned up, and refinished they are nice looking rifles.

I've seen these in Dick's Sporting Goods and wondered if they were any good. Now I know, thank you!

@qmachine08 I got mine for $169.00 I've seen 'em for between 150 to 250, but average price is $199, if your close to an Academy they always have 'em for under $200.

krazy45cat 1 year ago
@krazy45cat Thanks, appreciate u checking it out.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
Great video I like the mav's I almost bought one of these but got a great deal on a new Mossberg.
Also one thing to mention the warrenty of the mav vs the mossberg is different. I think the mav is one year and the mossberg is three or five years.
Great looking shoty! Great video!
TrailerPark42 1 year ago
@TrailerPark42 Yeah the wty is different, probably another reason it's cheaper. Fortunatly they're pretty reliable, although if u can find a deal on a mossy it's a no brainer.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
@NeverEnuffAmmo Yeah I like the mavs and the 500 I picked up wasnt that much more so I just went that route. The Mavs are strong guns and like you said its a Mossberg just a few different things. I wanted the 590A1 but didnt see much of an advantage over the mav or the 500. I dont need a bayo lug if they are that close Im in more trouble then I can handle. Great video and keep them coming. I will have one up of my 500 soon.
TrailerPark42 1 year ago
@TrailerPark42 Thanks appreciate u checking out. Look forward to the vid.

Years ago i bought a mossberg 500 bull pup , first thing i noticed was the saftey didnt work , so i took it apart and ionside was a maverick 88 i send it back , i get it back and go shoot it 6 rounds and then it wont chamber a shell ,took it apart and the lugs that connect the bolt and forearm broke off . also if im not mistaken the forearms attach diffrently than a model 500
glock10mm 1 year ago
@glock10mm Wow, sorry to hear it. Wonder why it was sold as a mossy if it was a maverick. There are several guns I won't buy because I've had a bad experience w/ them, even though people tell me that it was just a lemon, so I understand how u feel. I wouldn't be a fan after that either.
NeverEnuffAmmo 1 year ago
@NeverEnuffAmmo i belive it was right when mossberg was stopping production of the bull pup but and i was told they were just trying to get rid of the bullpup parts a quick as they could i belive it had a lot to do with clinton making several shotguns D.D the 500 bullpup was on the list but he took it off
glock10mm 1 year ago
@lookin4memarbles It's nothing special but it does the job.
