What determines how far apart the frets will be from each other? is it Scale length? or is it The amount of frets the guitar has wether it be 24 or 22 etc etc? I have an 80s Warlock 24 fret and when i match it up nut to nut with my Gunslinger 22 fret The gunslingers Frets are spaced out further apart, dying to know WHY
hey dude, maybe you should look up "quick" and "easy" in the dictionary? quick and easy my ass!!!, wadda ya build,in, a space shuttle? blue stuff???? whats the blue stuff??? way to go legend!!
they make masking tape down to 1/4 of and inch. 2 pieces of 1/4 will fill any fret from 1/4 to almost 1/2 . Use bigger sizes for further down. No need to do time consuming caliper measurements for masking tape.....the rest of the technique I like.
guys im telling on u and will swear on it.tape off each fret as u go so u dont have to worry about the size width of the tape.and where ever u taped off.rub the fret with the finest grrid of still wool u can buy.i swear it works better then anything
youre crazy man , tons of work and time , buy tapes with different widths of 3m .... its a very fast e easy work ! and polish with a small dremel, its very fast and looks pretty good
Seriously? This is the longest, worst way possible to polish a fret. I could do 12 guitars in this amount of time. For a rosewood or other dark wood board, cover the soundhole or pickup with some low tack tape, and use 0000 steel wool and rub gently from the first fret to the last. I then use an old pickup bar magnet to attract the steel wool dust away from the guitar. On a maple neck guitar, use a metal fingerboard guard and then rub the steel wool along the fret.
@morbidguitar since he used a shop paper towel it got the sides too i dont know where you get your paper towels from but where i get mine the are soft and plush not hard as shit
I use white vinegar to clean my frets, and after I dry them; I use baby oil to polish the guitar fret. Then I wait for an hour or two for the oil to dry. I do this every two weeks. Is this safe? I've been doing this for a month. PS. I have an acoustic guitar.
@jlfernandez28 use steel wool (The finest wool you can find) to polish your frets and use lighter fluid to clean your fret board (dries fast so it won't cause damage, DO NOT USE NEAR A FLAME!!!) and when your fret board looks dry, take a couple drops of linseed oil and drop it onto the frets and rub it in with a kleenex or a rag (a couple drops is for the whole fretboard), and wipe off after 30 seconds or so and it should keep the moisture in
@jlfernandez28 Vinegar is an acid, I wouldn't use it to clean an instrument. Just dry scrub the fretboard with superfine steel wool from your local hardware store (be sure to cover your pickups and pickup cavities with painter's tape or cloth to prevent metal shavings from penetrating). Then shell out a few bucks for a good fretboard oil from a music store. I use Gerlitz Guitar Honey and I'm very pleased with it. Shines and protects, dries really fast. Vinegar/ lemon/ acidic stuff bad idea.
@jlfernandez28 Secondly, DO NOT USE BABY OIL on your guitar!!! The vinegar/ baby oil combo is going to destroy your fingerboard over time. The idea is to extract excess oil and dirt from the wood to prevent cracking and splitting. Proper guitar/ fingerboard cleaners and polishes are readily available online or at a music store and about $4-$9 a bottle depending on brand.
@OakPark11MileRd From working in the music industry, I can tell you that the actual consumer knows fuck all about the internal workings of the industry. There is a huge gap between players and businesses. I'm sure you have no idea that Larry DiMarzio is a huge fuckin' douche bag, or that Gibson guitars are complete crap nowadays, or that Fender is just a shit-all operation. Their custom shop uses the same wood as the American and Mexican series. We laugh at musicians, seriously!!!
@mdragoonx Have you seen the Gibson factories? Its amazing that they somehow get away with that hefty price they charge. They literally throw their guitars together. Shame.
@OakPark11MileRd For an individual guitar player it would be great, but for an actual tech who has to service lots of different guitars it would not work. Unless they are immensly expensive, most setups such as this are not hugely expensive, hence the tape method works better, considering they are not trying to service 20+ guitars a day. The music industry profit margin is not very high, so your perception of expenses vs. profit is skewed.
@OakPark11MileRd The problem with those is that you have to buy different ones for different scale lengths. So you need 25.5 for most Fender, ESP, Ibanez, Schecter, etc; 25" for PRS; 24.75" for Gibson or Gibson style; 26.5" for extended range guitars; 28" for baritones, 34" for basses; 35" for extended basses; 24" for Fender Jaguar and Mustangs; you get the picture by now. Tape, calipers, and 5 minutes is better than spending $1000s on different scale length metal cutouts.
This is a great technique. I just did it to my old Strat and it now plays so much smoother. The only change I made was applying the tape. I laid the large strip right on the fretboard and used an Exacto knife to expose each fret. As long as you keep the tip at an angle and pull it slowly, it will not scratch the wood.
Talk about anal with the tape cutting! LMAO lambs wool buffing wheel and superfine jewelers rouge following a dressing/crowning. Who has time for that?? No so quick and easy, i could do 5 necks in the same amount of time
Same guitar i have. Well dont ever touch my frets tho. Meatal polish???? Mothers?! Bad idea!!!!!!!!! It has wax mixed in with it so it fills small holes in metal and decreases resonance!!!! Bad! Bad! Bad! Idea!
@cast390 I also read it 100% garbage I use steel wool and steel fret guards however I am going to try the dremel stew mac fret weels. I believe they all work well and each one has benifits and flaws.
@sonicart77 quick is laying tape directly and then cut it against frets with knife. You hold it paralel to fingerboard surface (not scratching the fingerbord this way)
what the hell is the blue stuff???

For a guitar tech company, would it be too painful to make the videos use both stereo channels instead only the left?

pieces of tape all over the fingerboard? you only need two, and move them each time, then use steel wool to polish the frets.
quick & easy? yeah right.. sheesh

But not a bad technique, but i wouldnt call it quick and easy, maybe safe and thorough.
