Such application with Augmented Reality are already "reality" on android like Layar. But with navigation. Maybe google will come up with something like that. They already have street view etc.
But then, it will be on android first.. maybe later on the iPhone.
Completely useless video. Why place the phone (or the camera) so that you don´t see a damn thing. This video was supposedly meant to demonstrate AR. So I´d have liked to see matching outside and on-screen activities (if you know what I mean).
Die Platzierung des Handys deckt die Sicht auf die Straße ab. Und das ist ja gerade der ´ Clou det Janzen´- dass nämlich das z.B. entgegenkommende Auto auf der Straße und dem Handy zu sehen sind ...
wow the iphone is the greatest technolgy ever created i think i might actually get the iphone now , and to think 80 years ago the best thing was a radio wow just wow iv'e never been more blown away by all the iphone apps iv'e seen than anything ever.
There's a very cool iPhone app called Satellite Augmented Reality. It has a database of over 370 geo sats and lets you view where they are in the sky. It also calculates the azimuth and elevation angles for you based on your location. In addition, it lets you enter a virtual location in order to see what the satellite view would be in, say China, if you are in the US.
It's a conceptual video to show how this could work with navigation, of course then it's 'fake'!
But the idea behind this is great!
This would make the iPhone the most precise navigaton system ever! Because the camera in combination with GPS would allow to determine the position for, I don't want to lie, but 20-30cm or even less! Everyone who used a GPS system knows it's not that precise!
Just extra features like road sign recognition would use the camera as an input
You can already use programs like Layar to plot known information over live camera input
And GoogleMaps Streetview with Compasmode on lets you see the chosen area as you move your phone around (you point to North=>streetview turns realtime to North, you point to the floor=> you see the street etc:-)
It definately could. I know my 3GS could easily handle that. In fact, there lots of augmented reality apps on there way. Mark my words, you will see a Nav app like this. I'm an iphone developer and the 3.1 beta 3 enables apps to make use of augmented reality. Wouldn't really use any more resources than a navigation app such as Sygic or the upcoming Tom Tom app
Actually, plenty apps and services such as The Tube have made these kinds of things, and they are looking pretty awesome. Just another reason why the iPhone is the best device to get nowadays...
This is what we need; Technology that evolves as you use it. You see this kinda stuff in sci-fi films and in really expensive high-tech museums of ideas that are never made full use for the public or you just make it yourself.
We have the super technology to create the things this world so desperately needs, so whats the problem? Money. It's always goddamn money. Are own bodies can't keep up with technology these days. How we heal slowly.
I think our bodies are trying to tell us something.
Technology is always atleast 4 years ahead of what we actually know.
But the only reason we arent getting it right now is they want to give you it in steps so they can make the maximum of money out of it.
The thing shown above can be easily produced by any large company, will they do that? , no because all companys that made tomtoms or garmins or whatever will stop earning money in an instant.
Or they would have to make it verry pricy to keep making money of out current GPS's.
Android already has several augmented reality apps

Although I think this video is a mockup, I believe such an application is possible. Just look at my quick'n'dirty video response.

You dont know much about GPS eh..
The camera is mostly there for the user,as output
Just extra features like road sign recognition would use the camera as an input

Combine the 2 and..wow!
