It's great what Tal Wilkenfeld is accomplishing in her music career, being still so young... Playing with some of the greatest musicians alive, like Herbie Hancock or Jeff Beck, is such a great deal... =)
Tal's an excellent bass player, but seems to be letting a lot go to her head - good but not THAT good that she can dog Mr. Hancock. Hopefully she'll level out, not playing-wise, but acting-out-wise.
I think you're misinterpreting what you're seeing. Looks like everybody's having fun to me, ESPECIALLY Mr. Hancock. If he didn't have the highest degree of respect for her, she WOULD NOT be on stage with him at all, much less touring with him.
I prefer Jaco Wilkenfeld w/o makeup. She is so beautiful w/o it. Hancock jumped the shark about the same time Fonzie did. Colauita does some lame gigs like playing w/Sting. I love that yawn at 5:37. He's more Bored to Death than Zach Galifanakis

I love Tal, what a wonderful musician :) Id like to know from a marketing standpoint though, how does she, as opposed to so many other young talented musicians, who are also just as expressive, 'make it' to the big time? I have no doubt in my mind that some of these musicians took her on just for the novelty of having a young girl in the band. Nothing against Tal, she deserves all the credit, Im just curious. Its amazing!
@jlebesis Tal is not only a girl, but she's surprisingly young, yet she has a very mature approach to improvisation and songwriting. I've seen really few bass players with her control over the notes.
@virgult Thats really well said, and the more I listen to her playing the more I can see that. A real joy to listen to. Though there is still something very marketable about a female bass player ;) Its really heartening to see people really notice true musicianship rather than just some of the guys you see out there who spew out 'chops' (Which I love too by the way) as fast as they can and please the masses with just speed. Thats great, but Id much rather what we see here :) Thanks for reply!
Hm. Quite honestly, I can understand Vinnie yawning. I mean – this is nice background-style music, but no more. I was never a Herbie Hancock fan, but he definitely did some noteworthy stuff in the past; yet what he does here is no more than putting a few not really interesting notes on top of a nicely played groove by Colaiuta and Tal. Who, IMO, also do a lot less remarkable job than when playing with Jeff Beck.
Herbie with who? With Tal. That ultra-groovy girl that was born in 1986 and has played with numerous superstars like Prince, Jeff Back and so many others. Herbie likes it big time.. that cool synthplayer, 71 years old right now who played Mozart pieces when he was 12 in the Chicago Orchestra. Like Beck said when he saw Hendrix: 'I think I'm going to find a job at the f*cking post-office'.
I can't believe that Herbie is like 70 years old here and he looks at least 20 years younger than his age! It's so cool to see the awesome Tal Wilkenfeld playing with him.
i wonder what she will do when those old "musician gods" she played and plays with die or get out of business... maybe retire at age 31 like Ruth Komanoff Underwood? I really hope that she will never stop playing.
Oh my god Tal is so sweet I can't believe she's so affectionate towards Herbie and he's just like...god damn what a woman. And she's so beautiful what the hell lol I want to meet this funky ass chick

@Zappafan1980 no info on carlock.. looks like she is going for a front person singing gig... she has great sounding vocals...I like the song Times are a changing that she does.... too bad she did not sing touring with beck... she did do some with herbie h.

I think the ultimate testament to becoming an astonishing bassist is to fix Herbies' earpiece and still not drop a single beat. Well done Tal. 1:20-1:24
@Boylefawsitt, you're right. I think it's because the studio original featured a synth bass, not a bass guitar, and the synth sound of the melody in the studio version was thicker, fuller. So the tone of the original contrasting lines was closer than here, where Tal's line doesn't have the "presence" of the studio synth bass and Hancock's keyboard is almost toylike in tone. Big gap between the two tone-wise, so the aural funkiness that carried the rather pedestrian composition is virtually gone.
have you ever played a festival gig, its tiring some drummers may have too play behind several bands and if it becomes a jam session, some song can be 20 minutes long, multiply that number of groups, you would yawn too
It looks like that a certain musician was eager to hit the sack in time to watch his favorite soap opera, drinking a nice warm tea. LOL. Or he simply needs a new musical challenge. Perhaps Herbie`s music is small potato for a monster like Colaiuta hein ?
I saw Herbie back when he had Wah Wah Watson, Paul Jackson, James Levi, Bill Summers and they were better, plus Herbie's gear was analog instead of sampled.
i found myself wanting herbie to put a cork in it so I could hear Tel more clearly!!! Good job Tel-I hope I can hear you live 1 day if you ever come to KC!!!
Along from all that talent onstage, I also love Tal's facial expressions and that fantastic head of hair. Looks even cuter with a bit of eye makeup this time. Damned sweet! Sorry, back to the music!
Oh my god, I hope that Tal is not going to do the same shit like J.Pastorius or M. Miller....Tal is a real team player till now...Miller and Pastorius, gifted players, but ego trippers... Tal make other band members play better . Look at Jeff Beck, never in his long carrier he played so well sinds he played with Tal . And also with Herbie it looks like they played 30 years together..
@bschuit That's because Jeff Beck is pretty mediocre. Don't try to compare him with Herbie. Although a good player, school is still very much in session for Tal, and she probably counts her blessing being able to play with Herbie.
@quathar i find your observation very limited. Music is way more vast than you can understand. Just listen and enjoy these wonderful players and their sound, Jeff Beck included. Judging music is like try to capture air in your fist. (sorry everybody for my english, i'm italian)
@quathar I understand what you say, but there's difference between Judging and Choosing. I listen and i choose one thing over another, because as you say i like it more; but i don't judge the thing i choose better than the other one. I appreciate the difference and the diversity; i find sterile try to rank music or artist. You labeled Jeff Beck as "pretty mediocre": i think it's pretty absurd, considering its contribute in music and guitar evolution. Thanks for your replica, however. cheers
Thanks shfan42. Tal is The Bomb! Watching her play with Beck at Ronnie Scott's and here with Herbie you realise just how incredibly versatile and technically gifted she is. The review from the Ronnie Scott gigs said she had 'Jaco Pastorius-like melodic invention and mastery of odd meters', and that her solo on Lovers was a 'masterclass of taste, lyricism and feeling.'
Her sense of fun can be found on the Macy Gray track 'That Man', and she's genius on Ritenour's album '6 String Theory'.
Tal is the whip!

Curiously dull.
Boylefawsitt 1 year ago
@Boylefawsitt, you're right. I think it's because the studio original featured a synth bass, not a bass guitar, and the synth sound of the melody in the studio version was thicker, fuller. So the tone of the original contrasting lines was closer than here, where Tal's line doesn't have the "presence" of the studio synth bass and Hancock's keyboard is almost toylike in tone. Big gap between the two tone-wise, so the aural funkiness that carried the rather pedestrian composition is virtually gone.

have you ever played a festival gig, its tiring some drummers may have too play behind several bands and if it becomes a jam session, some song can be 20 minutes long, multiply that number of groups, you would yawn too
drnubian 1 year ago
@drnubian seriously i don't think that vinnie was booked for any other group but herbie hancock at the montreux jazz festival!
LHondrums 1 year ago
@drnubian yeah, it gets boring after the first 20 minutes . .

@ceckaio Greetings from Brazil,
It looks like that a certain musician was eager to hit the sack in time to watch his favorite soap opera, drinking a nice warm tea.

And also with Herbie it looks like they played 30 years together..
bschuit 1 year ago
@bschuit That's because Jeff Beck is pretty mediocre. Don't try to compare him with Herbie. Although a good player, school is still very much in session for Tal, and she probably counts her blessing being able to play with Herbie.
quathar 1 year ago
@quathar i find your observation very limited. Music is way more vast than you can understand. Just listen and enjoy these wonderful players and their sound, Jeff Beck included. Judging music is like try to capture air in your fist. (sorry everybody for my english, i'm italian)
Amleto69 1 year ago
@Amleto69 You judge music all the time. You like some music, and you don't like other music, as with everything in life.
quathar 1 year ago
@quathar I understand what you say, but there's difference between Judging and Choosing. I listen and i choose one thing over another, because as you say i like it more; but i don't judge the thing i choose better than the other one. I appreciate the difference and the diversity; i find sterile try to rank music or artist. You labeled Jeff Beck as "pretty mediocre": i think it's pretty absurd, considering its contribute in music and guitar evolution. Thanks for your replica, however. cheers
Amleto69 1 year ago
@quathar: OMG, what a dumb thing to say!
Horsieboms 1 year ago
Thanks shfan42. Tal is The Bomb! Watching her play with Beck at Ronnie Scott's and here with Herbie you realise just how incredibly versatile and technically gifted she is. The review from the Ronnie Scott gigs said she had 'Jaco Pastorius-like melodic invention and mastery of odd meters', and that her solo on Lovers was a 'masterclass of taste, lyricism and feeling.'
Her sense of fun can be found on the Macy Gray track 'That Man', and she's genius on Ritenour's album '6 String Theory'.

everyone should listen to Tal and Jeff Beck Live at Ronnie Scott's - it's Epic.
