If the crew of Derren Brown said to the directors "Get two or three people (from a cast of dozens!) who are REALLY interested in readings", would it not be reasonable to assume these people WANT to believe, and thus see truth in, whats being said?

4. The colour of the cats? She's going to be wealthy for her age and it makes sense she'd get a pedigree. He said "Silvery Blue". British Blue are common pedigrees. If she said no, it could have blue eyes (Persian). It could have had a blue or silver collar. He could've even referred to the moodiness of the cat if he wished!

1. Saying she had a holiday could've been interpreted as many things. She could have had a weeks break. She could have seen a relative she hadn't seen for a while where holiday could get converted to "a trip" if it didn't land to get a hit.

2. He can assume from her age and status she dates. Her face after mentioning a boyfriend would determine the status of the relationship to him, after which he can make insights.

3. The cats? She's a successful actress who probably can't afford the time...

If Joe was truly psychic and believed it 100%, he wouldn't have to attack, he would be confident enough to say, "That was really impressive, Derren. Very good exposing frauds like this! However Derren Brown is pretty much as big a fraud himself.

In fact he often uses actors to play along with him, despite specifically stating he doesnt.

For example the girl that he reads in this episode is an actor working for channel 4 herself. She's planted there and appears when it's time for Derren to do his reading. Look her up yourself. She even uses her real name in the show, Claire Cooper. HOT reading by Derren, not cold reading or NLP mind reading

Derren has a good point about people giving Joe the benefit of the doubt. Not only is Joe a convincing character, but he also is overly assertive, automatically exuding an air of dominance over his subjects. This, I believe, almost certainly promises good business because most people like to AVOID conflict, therefore, it is easier for him to manipulate them into submissiveness, in turn giving him the benefit of the doubt.

However, when I was first introduced to Derren Brown's material, he kind of came off as perhaps a bit egotistical, but I believe that was because he was such a sharp, quick character. (And I couldn't imagine someone that amazing to NOT be egotistical! ) But his work lately in revealing frauds really does show how humble and kind-hearted he is...or at least appears to be...after all, he IS good at deceiving!

There is an interview by Richard Dawkins, in which Derren sais that one incentive for mediums to fake paranormal powers is simply to boost their ego. It's the same with Derren, except the power he fakes to have is of psychological nature rather than supernatural.

Power got the first dude's ticket right, failed on the 1-2 brothers, failed on the bike, cold read the grandmother I assume. Still that first traffic ticket is not quite cold reading.

Derren somehow nailed the Maldives, some cats, cold read the rest. No creepy numbers to speak of yet, like the Power guy. Still not convinced it's all 100% cold reading.

@firuinthehouse It's most likely not 100% cold reading, but there are still gimmicks. The red aura representing "legal issues, connected to a vehicle" is not very impressive. Parking tickets, speeding tickets, broken tail/headlights, cracked windshield, etc. etc., are all very common. Guessing the guy had a ticket related to a car is a very very wide area, and would be difficult to miss. It's just as psychic to say "I'm seeing a white car... does that make sense?". White cars are very common...

@BortOBob Well how often do you get traffic tickets ? I for one even as a youngster, like that guy, was getting very few of them. So could be days, but also years between tickets. I'd say it's a pretty strong coincidence there, or some pretty good intuitive work. IMO traffic/parking ticket is NOT something you can just cold read on, to 1 guy.

If he got it wrong, he could easily move on to saying red auras also meant he had a health problem recently. Or money troubles. Or this, or that. He was lucky he got the ticket thing right the first time. He most likely did not see a colorful aura of mystical light surrounding the guy. Especially considering he claims to talk to the dead, which has little or nothing to do with tickets.

@BortOBob Here things are a bit more complicated. I myself cannot see auras, so anybody claiming they can, usually get a lot of questions from me :)

That being said, I do work with Remote Viewing, and that's got a little to do with what this guy claims to do. Which is

1. get intuitive signals

2. interpret or decode those signals to actual data

Now if he saw red, it's not that the guy has a red field, but that his intuitive mind showed him that as a "hint" to a parking ticket. In RV, this works.

@BortOBob In any case I think it's not enough data to tell either way. To me, this parking ticket thing is not quite clear, it's something that might be for real, if he would do it to several people. As it is with just 1 case, for me it's just a maybe. Possibly. Can't tell from 1 case.

Anyway I get the feeling that the guy believes what he says, he is just sloppy about testing / proving it properly. I've seen the same in RV, the need to believe that it works 100%, even when it doesn't.

Numbers are easy when applied to family yet sound significant. 1 is unlikely as are 2, 3 and to a lesser extent 4. 5, 6 and 7 are likely to be right especially since you can add of subtract yourself. Ex: 2 parents, 3 siblings and yourself. that's 6 but subtract yourself and 5 is also right. Add grandparents and 7 is correct. Say 7 and it's actually 8, you were close. 9 and 10 are less likely because even if you have children grandparents are likely to be dead. It's high probability these numbers
