Kermode Has so far been a splendid critic and given even -the Tarantino situation- some fair critique BUT the only two times when he has been hmm how to put it.. DUMB Is when he claims that he really likes the Twilight Saga And he thinks that Michael Ciminos The deer hunter is one of the worst films ever made... So Mark The good doctor Kermode on Twilight And The deer hunter... Nothing that even comes close to resembling some good, intelligent and fair critique.
@mac88productions no, no new films, just the same ones done in 3d. probably with another couple of stupid, minor changes. if there's any hit-men reading this, fancy doing the world a favour?
The Ides of March, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Moneyball and J. Edgar. Definitely not The Iron Lady, I can't be bothered sitting through two hours of drivel glorifying a woman who was atrocious. I love Meryl Streep and I'm sure she'll get praise for the role but I'll never pay money for that film, ever.
I'm looking forward to The Muppets, because of Jason Segal. I didn't know Tintin was out this year but I'm looking forward to it though I don't know much about Tintin and I think the motion capture might let it down.
Oh dear, Sherlock Holmes really. The first one wasn't that terrible, but it was hardly good enough for anyone to really anticipate a good sequel, was it?
And although Depp gave a good performance in Gilliams Fear and Loathing, that film was flawed. What makes you think The Rum Diary will be any different?
@DrHasslein The Iron Lady? Why? The Trailer made it look terrible. Have a look at it again. Meryl Streep can, and usually does, provide great performances, but based solely on the trailer her impersonation of Thatcher looks like shallow mimicry to me.
@dunnededunnedunne Well that's your opinion and you're entitled to it and I've watched the trailer a number of times. I just think it looks interesting that's all and I like Meryl Streep. Maybe I'll feel differently after I see it, maybe it will exactly like you predicted.
I'm interested in all of the films that Mark said he was interested in (except for "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"). I'm also looking forward to "Shame", "Drive" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy", none of which have come here to Sweden just yet.
Next year, I also really want to see "The Hunger Games", "Prometheus", "The Avengers", "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Brave".
@Markunator Tinker tailor solder spy is over-rated/flawed. Watch the Alec Guinness tv version instead. Its available on Youtube.
Drive is quite a hypnotic watch, but its also quite a cold experience in some ways, and its hard to tell if its a commentary on American fascist cinema (Arguably due to its grotesque depiction of violence), or a straight up Art house version of American fascist cinema (it makes you root for a psychopath.)
@dunnededunnedunne "Overrated" doesn't mean shit. It just means that everyone liked it except you. No, I will not see the Alec Guinness version instead, because everyone says that the Gary Oldman version is fantastic, and I'm not going to not see it just because YOU think it's "overrated".
What the hell was that Hugo crap? SCORSESE?! He made Taxi Driver! How the heck can he be anything to do with Hugo? And there's little more that can be said about Mark's Twilight appreciation...
The films I'm looking forward to are all a fair way off; Red Tails, Coriolanus, even the fantastically shlocky Iron Sky (featuring shlock staple Udo Kier, no less)... All scheduled for early 2012.
Don't think I'm really excited about anything coming up soon... Maybe The Thing. 50/50 could go either way (ba-dumm-tisch)
Real Steel, The Ides Of March, 50/50, The Thing, Harold And Kumar 3D and Mission Impossible 4 are the movies I went to see before the end of the year.
Tintin for me. A script by Stephen Moffatt, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, produced by Peter Jackson, music by John Williams and directed by Spielberg? I really cannot wait for this film.
Moneyball looks interesting. Some of films he mentioned looked good too. Fincher doesn't make bad films so Girl with Dragon Tattoo should hopefully live up to the hype.
As a guilty fan of stoner comedies I'm pretty hyped for the upcoming A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. The 3D puts me off immediately but the trailer definetly had a lot of decent laughs in it so...who knows.
We Need to Talk About Kevin also looks like it will be worth watching, even if it turns out to be a bit naff.
I'm more up for the stuff coming out in 2012; John Dies at the End and The Woman in Black are both on my must-see list.
La piel que habito (Almodóvar) Anonymous (Emmerich) A Dangerous Method (Cronenberg) Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (Ceylan) Melancholia (von Trier) Carnage (Polanski) The Iron Lady (Lloyd) J. Edgar (Eastwood) The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan) Prometheus (Scott) The Bourne Legacy (Gilroy) Django Unchained (Tarantino)
In 2011 I am looking forwards to Tintin, TGwtDT (I am Swedish and I do not understand why people liked the Swedish adaptation. They got the characters all wrong), MI4, and Wild Bill if it comes out before 2012. I am also looking forwards to a teaser trailer for the Hobbit, which must be released in 2011!
Here is a list of the films that I am most looking forwards to seeing in 2012: 1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2. The Great Gatsby 3. The Dark Knight Rises 4. A Dangerous Method 5. From Up On Poppy Hill 6. The Amazing Spiderman 7. Bond 23 8. Prometheus 9. Wild Bill 10. Jack the Giant Killer 11. Gravity 12. Cloud Atlas 13. The Woman in Black 14. The Life of Pi 15. Iron Sky 16. The Dictator 17. 47 Ronin 18. Les Miserables 19. Cosmopolis
@dunnededunnedunne I have never read Empire in my life... and my choices might be slightly populist, but I don't think that makes them bad choices. My favourite films of all time are The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Brazil... so I am pretty Excited about seeing The Hobbit.
@dunnededunnedunne@dunnededunnedunne My feelings aren't hurt at all. And apart from Kermode, I only really use IMDb/Wikipedia to quench my film info appetite. Now and then I watch James Rolfe (cinemassacre)'s film reviews and videos, and Check Rotten Tomatoes.
I'm going to be spending three days at The Workstation for Sheffields Celluloid screams festival later on this month which will feature a few UK premiers, with Tinker Tailor now past that is what I'm most looking forward to.
@TheHappydead With the Bladerunner and even Promethus I have many doubts . That is why I am looking forward for Promethus as I am thinking it is either going to be good or bad and none in between. Also having my doubts about The Dark Knight Rises.. And I do hope I am proved wrong..
@MrBronzefonz Ridleys either gonna cement his place at cinemas top table or he's gonna kinda ruin his two finest works, as for TDKR , Im pretty sure Nolan wouldnt do another unless he was 100% sure he could pull it off, both movies/directors have great casts to play with so Im trying to stick with my unflinching optimism for now .........
@MrBronzefonz Nolan like every director will slip up at some point and the third film of the same franchise is making me think is he spreading himself maybe too thin?. I hope it will a huge hit and take a ridiculous amount of money at the box office, if for one reason that the studio may again give him free reign for his next director job . The last time he was allowed to do that we got Inception
'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' of course, 'The Rum Diary' is worth keeping an eye out for. A little bit further ahead 'The Avengers' should be a great super hero blockbuster(I love Joss Whedon) and although I don't know much about it, I'm really excited for Rian Johnson's 'Looper'.
I have very high hopes for John Dies at the End, though last I heard it was uncertain whether it would 2011 or 2012.
Having watched Bugsy Malone far too often when I was a child, and then Lock Stock when I was a teenager, I feel like I've kind of grown up with Dexter Fletcher, so Wild Bill is also one I'm keeping an eye on.
A remake of Straw Dogs really baffles me too, it's simply not necessary. As for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, well I didn't think the original Swedish version was anything special so don't really have much of an opinion on the US version, only that once again it proves Hollywood is fast running out of any original ideas. I am looking forward to the new Cronenberg film A Dangerous Method though.
