Very nice! Great job there guys! Nice looking setup you have there. A few questions though: what kind of crucible are you using, did you make it yourself; and how did you shape the form for the mold?
No, de verdad no me parece prehistorico. Este es un proceso que todavia es usado en todo el mundo para producir productos, especialmente para aplicaciones de plomeria, entre otras cosas
you never want to wear gloves when your working on machine that have moving parts, something could get caught. ok, never say never, there are some rare occasions when you should wear glove
@NigelHollioake Why dont you watch the fuckin video and then make up the steps ! Heat up the aluminium then make fill the basin with sand. the pattern is made from jelutong. The pattern is made from polystyrene foam. the pattern is sandwhiched between the the cope and the drag, the sand is a special oil bound sand. you then make two hole so you can pour the molten in, the holes are filled, then bops your teapot and let to cool.
sorry if i sound ignorant but what happens to the Styrofoam that was in there does it just dissolve from the heat? and what was that white powder you used, was it to prevent the 2 halves from sticking or something?
This type of casting does not use styrofoam -- you might Google "evaporative foam casting" or "lost foam casting" for the details of that process. This is "loose pattern sand casting." In this process, the pattern is removed after the sand is packed around it. The powder is parting compound - it keeps the pattern from sticking.
I've seen people cast shapes like a skull etc in this way, but if your design has concave shapes, how do you remove the pattern without ruining the mould?
@Hyshinara It's not really concave, just tapered. The thick side is placed at the parting line between the two halves of the boxes (gah, mind went blank, forgot what they're called..)
Annotations on the video would be really helpful to students new to the process.
Unless I'm mistaken, the removal of the pattern prior to casting wasn't very clear.

is the part that shape the earth going to disappear? it burns when the liquid metal enters?
mareforza10 2 years ago
No it is removed. It is only used to make a cavity in the sand mold. A type of casting that liquid metal burns the model is lost foam casting.

what kind of sand their using? have anyone know? can we make it DIY?
leepaz4050 2 years ago
It's called Petrobond. It's oil bonded instead of water. Way better for the home or hobby guy. You can mull it up and it keeps for a very long time.

you don't need to use parting compound in the beginning, and you don't want to get to much of it on the pattern
