  • Cool truck

  • "The carbon from the oil penetrates the steel, hardening it, just like a grade 5 bolt vs a grade 8" What? Maybe the very surface, but how does it penetrate steel? It doesn't... the quenching might change the tempering though, depending on the temperature, heating time and speed of quenching

  • seriously, it's a fricken mirror bracket, it doesn't need to be hardened

  • sometimes burrying the hot object in hot sand and letting it cool gradually is needed as well, particularly when welding cast iron. it all depends on the application.

  • you should always let the material cool as slowly as possible and sometimes even post heat as rapid cooling of the metal makes it harder and more suceptable to cracking or breaking

  • W A T C H M Y V I D E O S!!

  • dosint getting that metal that hot and then putting water on it make it weaker ?

  • @bjswagger99 Yup, but it's not an issue

  • did good till he started spraying water on it, that is making that part weak now, should just let it cool on its own. If anything, you want to dip it in alittle oil, this action hardens it while water could leave a crack or two in the metal.

  • @fordwindsor351 True, but it's easier to spray water than Virgin Olive oil... lol...

  • @CORVAIRWILD trying dipping it then if spraying seems funny to you

  • @fordwindsor351 It's just that it's in an akward spot, usually attached to things

  • pumpkins are orange

  • My friends Toyota MR2 Spyder needed an new clutch and doing that required us to remove the headers but the bolts were rusty so when we tried to torque them loose we snapped off the heads. So I have some questions. What kind of torch did you use, how long did you heat it for, should the header and stud be heated or just the stud, and will this work most of the time? We tried this earlier but I feel like we did it wrong so that's why I'm asking.

  • @PIchillin456 So what happenned finally? I just saw this question!

  • @CORVAIRWILD well we got the suckers out but it involved drilling out the bolts and re threading the holes. We tried those techniques but even they couldn't get those things out. I don't think we will be replacing the clutch again on our own. What was supposed to take a day took 2 weeks. But thanks for this video. It was definitely helpful.

  • @PIchillin456 rust never sleeps... Lol...

  • vise grips are a trademark name

  • who cares? do you call them adjustable clamping pliers? everyone calls them vice grips, just like we call an adhesive bandage a band-aid or tissue a kleenex

  • Chevy Scottsdale was my first truck when I was 17. Miss that old work truck.

  • nice vid:)

    one question.

how would this technique far say on a cast aluminum motocycle wheel with a broken stainless bolt in side the hole. :(

would this weaken the aluminum wheel or would the cooling of the aluminum just just shrink round the broken bolt stud??

    any ideas.

    cheers

    again nice vid. :)

  • i wouldnt heat up aluminum like that if i were you

  • @rm98752 ttp much heat on aluminum will melt the aluminum and then your really in a bind.the best way when dealing with aluim is to drill the bolt and extract it with and extractor no heat at all, but oyu can pre soak it in liquied wrench or wd40 for about 1 hour before drilling and extracting..steel and aluminum never play well together..

  • if you were for some reason worried about the hardness of the metal, when its hot just drop it in a dish full of used motor oil. the carbon from the oil penetrates the steel, hardening it, just like a grade 5 bolt vs a grade 8

  • dOES THE RED HEAT weaken the end of the shaft.

  • A bit, not a biggee...

  • no it actually hardens it if you let it cool down byitself

  • um im not sure if it would work with all metals but i know you can harden iron like that just heat it up cherry red and let it cool by itself not dip it in water. My buddy used to make chisels out of car springs that way theyre freakin stong as hell

  • lol penetraiting oil???? lol u scorched tha chrome nooooo lol

  • Penetrating oil is a joke. Only usefull when threds are turning, clean the path. Door locked? Penetrating oil ain't gonna' knock it down... Use battering ram!!!

  • ya gotta be patient man soak it every couple of hours for a day or 2 i forget what the stuff i use is works every time

  • Unconvincible... Sorry... I've got 4 sets Oxy-Acetylenne torches... Works 90% of time... Bye, off ta work...

  • sniff sniff i dont have a oxy torch sniff

  • PB blaster! if that fails get out the M2 flamthrower!

  • but your part lost all their mechanic property

  • Not all, maybe 20%, and it's a mirror support. Bigger than a leaf spring bolt, and it's just a mirror!!!

  • Ya cant take my advice because you gave it too me . So I was Just borrowing it you had it all da time and did know it, or something of da sort, I don't think I made much headway with this comment, LOL

  • Blah, blah, blah..... I'z also a beggar... Ug

  • Wow, you made that look too easy!

  • Works 98% of the time. Didn't work on my sewer jetter. Gonna' cost time & a bit a cash doe a new hose end... Shame... Ug

  • YUp, get 'er done!!!

  • ya my neibjor says that all the time...larry the cable guy GIT-R-DONE....hahahahaha

  • Master Herr Doctor fix ze mirror wery nice.
