it's quite necessary actually. prix riders are VERY high strung and their riders ALWAYS have to keep contact with them to direct them, or else they get some very interesting ideas of their own. that rider was merely trying to balance the horse and push the horse's weight onto its haunches so it could make it over the jump. otherwise it would have been too flat/close to the base to make it over(and consequently would have hurt itself), or it might have just refused. =]

if you ask me, it is unnecissary, because pulling back the horse is only restricting it. you make a good point, but i highly doubt a 150 lb. person can shift a 1000 lb. horse's weight just by pulling back. and yes, their hyper, but the takeoff of a jump is the wrong time to "keep contact"

if you see one of these riders completely drop their horse before a jump by letting go, you'll see the horse refuse or jump too flat and hurt itself. and its not so much the rider physically pulling the horse backwards as i's a command for the horse to rock back onto its haunches to get the optimal amount of lift. and if a 150 pound person cant shift a horse's weight that much, then why do eventers train so hard to stay in balance with their horses? because the slightest shift can change balance
