"I need your confidence baby, and the gift of your extra time. In turn I'll give you mine, it's a rich exchange it seems to me, it's a warm arragement"
There are few unique and unmistakable artists in the world of popular music--such that noone can be likened to them. Joni Mitchell is one of them. Extraordinarily enough, she has done work with two other such, Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny. For the skill of writing lyrics and evoking a powerful mood with the music that they write, only Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, Eric Woolfson of the Alan Parsons Project and Don Henley have been at Joni's level of sophistication and power.
Been listen to this past few hours, just got high. Oh my Indeed what a beautiful morning. People seem to not understand my passion for music, being a singer songwriter my self. She makes me feel so good, ahhh you heard it too
This has been on my mind for days - thanks for posting I LIVE FOR JONI!!! WE met her on the both sides now tour - she performed me directly - sent pure energy from the stage looking me in my eyes!! Yes I cried.
@chitsevermag301 I hate to compare Joni to anyone, it's impossible. A great female folk artist by the name of Sandy Denny sings lovely and wrote good charming songs. She's from England I think and played with Fairport Convention for awhile. But sorry there is no one similar to Joni and will not make you feel the way she does. Joni has a lot of stuff out there.
Of all the Joni songs I love and are closest to my heart, this is one of my favorites and will continue to be. Thanks so much Joni and to blackkendoll82 for posting it.
I was fortunate enough and honored to have been in the studio one evening when Joni recorded this @ A & M Records in August of 1977! My brother had asked Joni if he could hang out in the studio because he was starting a career as a record engineer. I remember Jaco Pastorius had played so hard earlier in the evening that his palm that it was bleeding.
Joni was so kind that evening and she still is. I'll never forget it!
@maysno24 In the book about Jaco's life Joni talks about how amazed she was the first time they played together because it was as if he anticpated her concepts for her music. This despite the fact that Jaco was actually unaware of her work before they met. For her, he was the perfect musical counterpoint and this album amply demonstrates that. I saw them in concert together at Tanglewood, and that night their music was nowhere near as focused and magical as on this terrific album.
This song is healthy for me and to listen to it is like a therapy - this flageolett sounds from Jaco Pastorius are going directly in my soul - I'm so happy for your sharing because my record is nearly destroyed - can't get enough from this - greetings from slideede
thanks for enlightening me -- I tried to google the subject in my own senior citizen way of surfing and couldnt find anything--I had talked to a bass player who was playing with a band in a yuppie-restaraunt/brewery in Philly who told me the story-- this was about 15 yrs ago and he said he had the same bass teacher as Jaco and Stanley Clarke-which I thought was very impressive--good old days,, I love Joni Mitchell music-Jaco fit perfect in that particular space in time.
The truly amazing aspect is that Joni was able to sustain her songwriting ability for longer than many, way past this particular Lp in fact. "I'll try to keep myself open up to you, and approve your self-expression/I need that, too?I need your confidence, baby?/And the gift of your extra time; in turn, I'll give you mine, sweet darlin'...it's a rich exchange, it seems to me--it's a warm arrangement"--for that alone she deserves a statue on the Siene in her honor!
Thanks for taking Don Juan's Reckless Daughter away from my channel, along with some 30 others.. Kindly tell me why. (For all you know, I might beJoni Mitchell' daughter.)
Yes, Joni has spoken about him. Not sure if it's specifically about his death. His family, wife and ex-eife have great rememberance sites about Jaco. Joni did a painting of him, although I have never seen it. What an incredible talent. You Tube has lots of great stuff on Jaco too.
I was wondering if Joni ever spoke about Jaco's death ?? Anybody know ?? I heard a story about him and would like to know-- Have been a fan since the album came out,,,
Joni dressed as a pimp....that was a shock when the album came out in '77. Now it just seems like an obvious progression in her music. I don't think "the dude" was really a pimp....this was the peak of the disco era, and that's how people dressed!
Always loved this song since i first bought this album in '77, amidst the onslaught of the disco boom. always good to clear the head with this album. P.S. If you don't know already, that fly dude on the cover... it's Joni.
@45spindle Me and a friend met Joni once and she told us how she went to a party dressed as she was on the album cover and approached an ex-boyfriend who simply said "Hello, can I help you?" Eccentric lady. She sounds good for a laugh too!

I'll try to keep myself open up to you
That's a promise that I made to love
When it was new
"Just like Jericho" I said
"Let these walls come tumbling down"
I said it like I finally found the way
To keep the good feelings alive
I said it like it was something to strive for

Can't get this song out of my head.
"Anyone will tell you, just how hard it is to make and keep a friend. Maybe they'll short sell you or maybe it's you
Judas, in the end
When you just can no longer pretend
That you're getting what you need
or you're giving out anything for them to grow and feed on."
Incredible lyrics. Incredible.
