If you read Leo Kanner's papers ( the doctor who first discovered autism) when he described all the traits of autism he also mentions unexplained bowel symptoms. Wasn't it just a couple years after eli put thimersol in the first vaccines?
It's just now being taken seriously, making it in to the first medical text books. I think studies show bowel disease as high as 95% in autism. DIet is shown to be the most effective treatment. autism dot com/treatment ratings
Dr. Tim Buie, double board in peds and peds GI at HARVARD has published numerous papers on the gut/brain connection. Toxic children can't breakdown gluten/dairy producing excitotoxins. 100 million neurons in gut and 70% of immune system. It would only make sense heal the gut and symptoms subside. GI yeast issues are common. Not only gfcf but food allergy test are needed. Most GI specialist are not willing to reconize it because of what Dr. Wakefield had to go through. He was right!
One other benefit of the diet that I saw with one student was that she lost a substantial amount of weight when she was overwieght prior to the diet. so her general health seemed to improve. However, I never saw any appreciable change in autistic behaviors. No cure there.
The GFCF diet in a double blind study decrease stims by around 15%. This means little change for a child who stims 16 hrs a day. It also means little change for a child who stims 1 hr a day.
GFCF might help concentration in relation to a therapy as this man here suggests & that is likely the real benefit by the diet.
That said, my nephew was helped by me in therapy in all environments & ate the Orlando buns (against his diet) all the way up until his home program began & made great gains then.
