I forgot about this song for such a long time. I get such a feeling when I listen to it. It's amazing. Love Splinter. I have to redownload that album.
Honor Blackman was a Bond girl in Goldfinger. She went by the name Pussy Galore! I do think the Sneaker Pimps did an excellent job on this video and the song itself is quite resonant.
@Beezy8701 interesting note on the Lorretta Young camerman technique ...seeking style over content , a nice hook & prevelent in pop social culture . Especially many follow the super rich & celebrity & the youth caught up in the latest overproduced style phenom ...all fluff & no content . Lady Gaga's upcoming show on HBO in may should be interesting ....Britany still raking it in , wished the girl would learn to dance, at least Natalie Portman worked @ Ballet for 10mos for Black Swan ,
This is a true song indeed. Hey, I fully respect what Kelli did for the Sneaker Pimps and she was a great singer AND at first i didn't like the idea of Chris trying to take over BUT... He can have this song... His voice, like hers, is very unique and i just think it this song would suit him better, with the tone/pitch of his voice and emotion. Good Job Chris and also, Thank You Kelli you did us proud and good luck with your future endeavours. Hope to see you again.
i know people say sneakers pimps is nothing without kelli, but really, she can still hold her own and this song is BEAUTIFUL. Their parting diminished neither.
I was gonna buy this from Itunes but the album version is a different version than this and it doen't sound nearly as good as this one. I hate when artist release a video version different than the album.
It's true! They should have enunciated the vocals better. I thought it was "You sell Loretta Young silks, fashioning yourself as gay" for the longest time.. *lol*
She was billed as "Gretchen Young" in the 1917 film, Sirens of the Sea. It wasn't until 1928 that she was first billed as "Loretta Young", in The Whip Woman. That same year she co-starred with Lon Chaney in the MGM film Laugh, Clown, Laugh. The next year, she was anointed one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars.
I love Honor Blackman in this, she's really beautiful despite being in her 70's when this was filmed, she's come along way from being Pussy Galore and she was in that programme with Joe mcgann where he is the housekeeper and she is the interfering mother in law, cant remember what it was called but she was, good song too!!!

It's like this. Earlier Sneaker Pimps were nothing and then Kelli became the singer and then they had some success, then Kelli is let go from Sneaker Pimps and then they're back to being nothing. This is not just my opinion, it's a fact.
I don't think either of them were better apart. Kelli was mostly good with them and they were mostly good with her, with a few exceptions here and there. Their live performances together were another matter entirely however...
One of the most powerful songs I've ever heard, especially from Sneaker Pimps. I'm glad that even after the lineup had changed this project produced great music... unlike many other bands from the nineties. If I could rate this video I'd give it 6 stars
@kevreedbick I agree the song is fabulous- but what was wrong with bands in the nineties??- It think things were so much better back then, musically speaking .. You're right about the lineup changing , and the song though it's great
I interpret that to mean "flimsy and superficial". Loretta Young had her own tv show where she made a dramatic entrance furling her silky gown. Her TV shows had an infuriating moral subtext that seemed to go great with her TV sponsor's message. I would have to watch an episode to refresh the memory, but it is a catchy and provocative lyric- would love to hear what the author has to say about it!
Have to disagree. Corner's singing of their songs gives them a depth and quiet, understated intensity that was lacking in Kelli Ali's bubblegum vocals. I think she worked on Becoming X because her vocals worked against the bleakness of the material and made it more accesible. I don't think her vocals would have worked with later Pimps material. Trip Hop as a genre died out out in the US and electronic took a diffrent direction in the UK. Goldfrapp, Gorillaz ect added humor, irony & sex appeal.
Not an easy answer, the correct answer. Not that Corner doesn't do a good job, they just went from working as a collective on the music (leaving the vocals more to Kelli Ali), to Corner taking over everything. Him being so focused on his other bands and stuff as well meant that while the music wasn't bad, but everyone in the band kind of trailed off. Love the Sneaker Pimps to death, but Becoming X is definitely the best album.
they kicked kelli out the band... what do u think happens when they kick out their front... its like a business trying to change its brand right when its gaining momentum, a supremely retarded decision that ruined their chance
Becoming x is a far more superior album to Bloodsport but change isnt always bad. And i have to admit that a handful of their newer songs are fucking awesome.
You know thats chris himself on the screen, and Loretta Young was a famous actress in the 20's-50's, she symbolized vanity and decadence in her time. As for being in a slang dictionary, thats someone elses opinion.
"I remember reading in a slang dictionary, that being called Loretta Young Silk, is an insult. It means to be superficial, shallow and too perfect physically. Like this video is comparing the two women-one who is getting "improvements" on her face with the other just watching and accepting her age."
as the video features Honor Blackman of The Avengers & Bond fame, could that be her watching one of her oldies or maybe even a Loretta Young film?...hard to tell from that face))
Does anybody else find the chorus of this song reminds them of the chorus to Muse's song 'Plug In Baby'? That's not to say anybody copied anybody else, before devoted fans of either band arm themselves with predictably unoriginal insults and aim them at me :)
"Got answers for everyone, Endless excuses" Like so many people I've known, this song fits! "Fashioning yourself as Gay" at every different part of this song make me think of different people at different points in my life. LOVE IT!
Loretta Young-Silks was an actress born in 1917. Life as an actor was a lot harder than it was today especially for a woman. They worked very long days and were at the total mercy of the studio (Look up Judy Garland and you will understand)
HER NAME was Loretta Young.. Not Loretta Young Silks.. That is the title of the song. It is a song on the nature of vanity and the abandonment of the depth of love in humans(amoung other things). Loretta Young was VERY well known in her day. She has only since faded slightly from the minds of our rampid youth. Those that sing to fabulous songs such as this but seem to put on a facade of depth and don't even understand any of it. She won an Oscar for Best Actress in The Farmers Daughter in 1948.

I bought 2 of the 'Bloodsport' albums off ebay, JUST to make sure i never ruined one or had to go without. My band covered this song years ago, considering bringing it back.... such a brilliant tune.
Not the least. They took a better direction, and Becoming X was possibly their worst album... I think Bloodsport was the best, by far. Chris Corner is the heart of the band. If Kelli was so integral, they wouldn't have been able to achieve this level of success without her.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Success?? No one even cares about them anymore :P probably only a handful, but when they debuted, you should of seen much more popular and heard they were. I really dont think they got more successful.
Sneaker Pimps never really disclosed, but it's speculated that the usage of Loretta Young has to do with the meaning of the song itself.
Personally, I think they used her as a good actress, and the song's about a girl who puts up a front and acts in front of everyone to hide her true emotions.
Has Young ever acted like that in her life, or performed as a character like that? It'd make sense.
I forgot about this song for such a long time. I get such a feeling when I listen to it. It's amazing. Love Splinter. I have to redownload that album.

You guys should check out IAMX. It is another band that Chris Corner is involved with. Actually better than Sneaker Pimps.

Nuh uh.
IAMX is pretty good though.

Seen IAMX live. Good, but nowhere near as good as the 'Pimps

NOoo way, tooo much difference.. The Pimps died the second they lost Kelli.

Not the least. They took a better direction, and Becoming X was possibly their worst album... I think Bloodsport was the best, by far. Chris Corner is the heart of the band. If Kelli was so integral, they wouldn't have been able to achieve this level of success without her.

Success?? No one even cares about them anymore :P probably only a handful, but when they debuted, you should of seen much more popular and heard they were. I really dont think they got more successful.

if you find out, please let me know. I love Loretta Young. Thanks!
