There's 2 way to not lag when exploding massive TNTs. For this case he used a plugin >> dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/nol­agg/ << which limit the number of TNT exploding at any one time. The other way is to increase your Java RAM usage. I've tested this and is able to watch 2k++ TNT explode with 4GB ram allocated. Minecraft don't require a good PC, just plenty of RAM is sufficient.
