Watch it. That's one of my best friends you're talking to. I know he's not the best when it comes to taking video, but considering what he was dealing with at the time, he did OK. Also, NO, a tripod wouldn't have helped. Where he was, there was only just enough room to stand there. There were no places he could have set down the camcorder either. I know it's not the best footage, but I've seen worse. We're all railfans here, so can't we all just admire Challenger?
Look. It was, essentially, the first time he's tried to record a steam locomotive go by at high speed. I'm not saying he did a great job, but at least he did get Challenger on video. Cut him some slack.
@dreambuilders48808 Well what did you expect, Pentrex quality footage? Mind you as my friend razgizaceblaze259 has pointed out I'm still new at shooting video so I have a lot to learn. Yes I probably should have edited that to be shorter but to do so would have cut out alot of the Whistlling that I heard from the museum which I though was good to include. So, Sorry for wasting your time but I did what I could do. At least it's another video of Challenger in Missouri.
@TheCottonTop okay first off I don't drink coffee. Second, I was breathing like because I was standing on one of the diesels for about half an hour with a bad knee, Do you think that would be comfortable doing that. Finally, I know my camera work sucks but at least I got what I did, ad for what it is it's not that bad.
I visited St. 'Louie' in '02 for Spring Break, and this was definitely one of our stops here during our visit and seeing all of their unique and amazing pieces of locomotion & rolling stock, including the now-silenced SLSF #1522. Such a shame insurance and mandated boiler work forced her into retirement again. :'(
Anyway... awesome footage! Rode behind that monster later that year, it can move! Glad to see her roaming the system again, need to see this kind of stuff here more often! :D
Cool video, I think you could use a tripod though lol. Also if you use windows movie maker you can edit out alot of the dead time. I really need to make it up there to see the big boy. I am going today to see the challenger on display in Sedalia MO.
@fastj14 Thanks for the comment, To be honest I don't think a tripod would have helped much, I was standing on one of the Museum's locomotives to take most of the video. Also, I was trying to get the engineer to whistle as they went past and they whistled just as they passed where I was standing so part of that was me being startled by the whistle blast and being excited. As for the dead time, I left that in since you could hear Challenger's Whistle in the distance. It sounds really haunting.
Wow, thank goodness for YouTube or I never would have been able to see this amazing video!

Hate to say it. But you will go down in history as having shot the worst video of
U.P. 3985 in the history of rail fanning. Sorry, but that was a waste of 9 minutes
and 39 seconds of my life! And YES, A TRIPOD would have helped you out
immensely . Heck, You could have set the camera down on the locomotive you
were standing on. Maybe just shoot through a paper bag would have got better
footage. THECOTTONTOP GOT IT RIGHT ON THIS CALL.

@razgrizaceblaze259 It's kinda hard to admire her in this video when the guy filming looks like he's having a seizure as it goes by

That was awesome! I loved it. What a beautiful locomotive, and, boy, she was really highballing.
Also, you hear that 'Bo Duke'-like yell after "Challenger" passed by? That's me!
