  • Great performance!

  • great video,,hot jazz

  • @nutsocket I really enjoyed shooting this. Some of best live music I've heard in a long time.

  • Al Hirt makes Nicholas Payton sound like a grade-schooler.

This abstract jazz just doesn't have enough form for me. Then again I'm from the Maynard Ferguson School of Jazz..:D

  • What a big fat yawn-this is so fake I'm gonna puke right after i turn my computer off.

Parker didn't die for this sellout crap. f*** off!

  • Taste...

Seems like people are confusing their personal preferences with other things. Regardless of how much you like or dislike this. You really have to respect each of these guys for how hard they've worked.

I try and listen to stuff that I don't understand, most recently some death metal. I may not "like" it as much but I can appreciate other aspects of the music. Just because I don't understand it doesn't make it bad music.

    Anyways...love this.

  • why no trombone WTFFF?!!!!11111111

  • @SergioBizzle What trombone player should have been in this group?

  • @JazzVideoGuy well, urbie green? :P lol he's dead long time ago, but I dunno, trombone is also a major jazz instrument, cetranly more than the guitar for ex, well at least I think so. It's just sad that I didn't see one in this band. There're quite a few good trombonists, so i'm suprised not to see one in there.

  • @JazzVideoGuy Eubanks!

  • great!! Some people think its easy to play jazz, its not

  • Whats the name of the song that starts at :38 secs?

  • @TonyF273 Grant Green's "Idle Moments." You can hear it on YT in fact......

  • This is great mastery ( got you intrepidpooch, big lol )

  • I saw Nicholas Payton play with the Dana Hall Quintet at the Chicago Jazz Fest 2010 and he tore the roof off and we were all outside. He was amazing and I hope he comes to Chicago, be sure to bring the trumpet!

  • Ah, it's Roger, which means its solid groovy education. Perfect for my Sunday morning. With coffee and croissants. And my girlfriend fussing over the newspapers. Enjoy your weekend, too!

  • holy shit .

    Gettin this album.

    if there is one?

  • These guy's are truly magnificent,

  • @ezerarias it sounds like you're describing the beginnings of a jazz nerd. Soon they will learn a bunch of chromatic triadic patterns and say they are too advanced for changes or music before 1980 see Jason marsalis says

  • That piano player is boss.

  • bill charlap sure is one weird guy.

  • jazz cool music

  • why do everyone have to argue soo much. Listen to the music. If you like it, great. If not, go to the next video...that simple. Its not even a debatable piece, just a great rendition of a monk tune.

  • would expect a more thought provoking arrangement from these guys

  • everyone patting each other on the back...somehow that doesn't seem very modest

  • this is a great video with great musicians.

There are idiots who post stupid comments and have no idea what they're talking about. The only reason they're against straight ahead Jazz is because they can't play it well. They stick to fusion and 1/2 chord songs where they can stick with pentatonics only.

  • You can't play free jazz unless you're already a solid straight ahead player.

    You got it man.

  • @CaptainJazz92 Seriously. The only people that complain (that I have encountered) of straight ahead usually can't play it.

Mainly because they can't play the changes, etc instead of playing in a freer tune and a tune such as impressions with two chords. Not saying Impressions is an easy tune, but a guy who can't play well won't have a hard time soloing over it instead of ...lets see...Giant Steps.

  • Hahah, exactly, it just pisses me off when people are that stupid and ignorant about this great music!

  • Wow...lots of red negative numbers here on such a great video. Lets listen to the music guys. :)

  • I love how the drummer's articulation at 7:50 with those cymbals. Simple and brilliant little thing added in there.

  • That is some VERY backwards thinking my friend. What is wrong with straight ahead playing? I listen to all kinds of progressive jazz , stefon harris, christian mcbride, romain collin, and more (and I'm sure many others watching this do as well), BUT there is and always will be room for straight ahead. Just because jazz is constantly moving forward, it doesn't mean we can't take a look back at the past that shaped the music of today. After all, this IS a tribute to Blue Note

  • Blame the musicians here!?they are among the heaviest in NYC right now and you should check them out in other situations. This one is just business-recording business. Charlap had to put up a show which was too tough from the get go-and all the cats knows it. There is no musician from Charlap's generation that can replicate the spirit of Mobley, Tina Brooks, Trane, Tyner, Mabern, Green,Joe Hend, Junior Cook etc'-those were other times man! move on and let the cats do their end of the "Deal".

  • Whatever...it's just my opinion. It's kinda tired on many levels to me...it's just ok...

  • I am not a critic pitbull-I am a musician..please do not judge people cause of their name or look. FYI, In jazz, I like everything that swings or groove first, but whatever...this is just a tribute album and all you gotta do is-not buying it. Peace.

  • well at least my ass has more taste than your whole self so you might beniefit greatly from it

  • @videolover61 elitist simply means he's better than you. everyone who uses the "elitist" argument is usually inferior.

  • Nope you dope. Elitist means pompous know it all, that never did!! Like those egg head critics that you listen to.

  • @videolover61 I was being sarcastic, not pompous, lol.

  • Oh ok...just like I cant smell bad breath over the internet...uh, im talking about yours! LOL

  • @videolover61 heheheheh, I don't believe in mouthwash.

  • Ahhhhhh!!!!! Thought so!!! LOL

  • You sir should shut da f**k up!

  • Hahahaha

still upset for being so uneducated a month later?

Here's a valuble piece of advice, instead of leaving stupid and douchy comments on YouTube, go take a jazz studies course so you might have some idea of what you're talking about

  • Oh I know what im talking about...you better believe that...and if you dont who gives a f**k!

  • Okay, buddy.

Whatever lets you sleep at night

  • @knowpitbull I disagree. I personally prefer straight ahead but can play fusion/latin/free just as well. Straight ahead characterizes jazz though.

  • I prefer straight-ahead as well, however straight-ahead shouldn't and doesn't imply being less adventurous, they could simply have stretch the boundaries! End the topic there are more important issues in this world, ie economy, healthcare, AIDS, war, etc. - Later!

  • If these guys sound like high school players lets hear your video, jiveass!

  • @epasurr very well said

  • Steve Wilson lookin' kinda old...like an old school teacher...

  • Very passionate style of playing in such modern times of Jazz!

  • Wow Ravi sounds amazing in this his playing is so different and unique in this session. I love this!!!

  • I don't get it..what happened to Criss Cross?..Monk would roll over in his grave...and Ravi Coltrane listened so much to Brecker he sounds like...Bennie Wallace!

  • i heard them play this live and it sounded a million times better

  • he so wouldnt!!!!

  • THAT'S IT !

  • the drummer blows my mind

  • Lewis Nash!

  • I'd rather hear a few soloists stretch out. I know this is a showcase, but damn! One chorus?

  • burning alto solo

  • Virtuosos of music, Gods of jazz!

  • beautiful!

  • yoooooo...is Ravi playing John's old Balanced action!!!!??? The thought gives me shivers man, not in a bad way, just because..

  • I dunno if I'd want that out on the road with me, if I were him I'd put it in a museum, or at least some kind of shrine at home! :)

  • mért nem lesz már soha semmi olyan, mint 50 éve

  • drz grbz hrj nzdjk 42 wjclwck

  • awesome vid...thx for posting

  • will see them this month at Birdland, cant wait. I saw Nicholas, 10 years ago. Was hanging out at a club in New Orleans.

  • Saw this group last night at Dartmouth - followed by an informal discussion with Bill and Lewis. SWEEET.

  • Saw them live in Boulder, CO, FABULOUS! I got to meet them backstage and take pics and get autographs, too! One of the best groups EVER.

  • gosh..ive been looking for something like this...its hard to find a combo like this without going back 30-50 years. All the wynton days of putting amazing combos together for an album are done.. it seems in jazz, recording hasnt really produced anything of import lately.

  • I always have to stop and say thanks for everything you do...

  • me too man, what would we do without the one and only jazz video guy......

  • Thank you so much for these great videos!

  • doug ramsey mentioned this vid today in his great jazz blog, "rifftides".

  • I saw them in Yakima! That's where Doug Ramsey lives! He introduced the band!

  • thanks a lot.

    Steph.

  • I was fortunate enough to see this group last night. It was spectacular! If you have an opportunity to see them, I can't stress enough how enjoyable the concert will be.

  • May the Blue Note 7, Charlap & Co thrive and jive forever! The gig at Zellerbach (UofCal) last month was beyond belief!

  • A wonderful combination of some excellent musicians playing a great piece which captured the spirit of Theloniois Monk. Thanks for posting this.

    a

  • Going to see them tomorrow night in KC, MO!

  • Heard these guys play in Napa last month, absolutely fucking unreal how good the concert was.

  • Blue Note 7 is the fo' shizzle.

  • yeaaaaaaa

  • Goosh, that'z really one of the dream teams in my head!!!
