I got stung by jellyfish when I was maybe four years old? I didn't go back in the ocean for about a decade. Regardless, jellyfish are fucking beautiful, so I don't mind their existence. x)
people that got hit by them say the pain is unimaginable. i heard some people just want to drown an die then seek help. this is why Australia is so isolated from the world.
Irukandji syndrome has been reported in every ocean including around the United Kingdom. So people who are avoiding going to Australia are being silly. Also you can wear a stinger suit.
Yes, you do. They are found on all the coatlines, as well as parts of America, Indonesia, Malasia. It has spread through out the world. This is obviously an older docco.
"No one knows why ... [they] need such a lethal punch" ... I thought it was because if it were less lethal, their prey would easily escape and the little jelly would starve. I saw that on a film once, so ... we do know?
r u seriously saying this?! of course its real. if u wear a full body suit your fine. some people would definitely film this. just because they exist, doesnt stop eveyone from going to the beaches now does it??
A full body suit will greatly lessen the chance but doesnt make you totally immune. As long as there is any exposed skin there is a chance. There is another video about a scientist researching them, he was wearing a full diving suit, gloves, hood, mask, and he got stung on his lip. Someone diving with him got stung by a broken tentacle on her glove.
They're wrong about how the venom is injected. Irukandji venom ejects from the tip of the nematocyst, so it doesn't always enter the bloodstream directly.
Im 12 and I got stung when I was 8 it was horrible. I was in the hospital for a few months. I can't describe the pain. I was very close to dying. All this from paying about 3000$ to go on a vaction to Australia. I will never go swimming in the sea there ever.
ah it is deadly it stings u which causes its venom to flow threw your blood stream and if enough gets in its over shutting down your body system then your dead
Technically speaking it's not deadly at all. The venom doesn't kill you, it just causes such terrible pain that people with a weak heart or cerebral blood vessels are apt to have a heart attack or stroke simply from the massive rise in blood pressure that comes from being in such awful pain
The box jelly IS actually deadly, and hurts like hell, but you can't compare the pain. Morphine doesn't touch it. Most people in the middle of Irukandji Syndrome BEG for death. Seriously, it hurts that much.
Why called irukandji? I thaught the Irukandji was the 1cm small jellyfish with 4 trails that are the most toxic "animal" on the planet. They are spreading as well around the world. Maybe another of mother earths attempt to limit the spread of human beings lol. there are too many of us. -Our impact on the planet is huge. Let the Irukandji's loose!-
Would you actually wish this upon someone because "our impact on the planet is huge"? you know what, I hope your closest family member gets stung and see how much you "lol" then.
why thank you very much for wishing it on my family members. Just becasue i popped out a theory to why this jellyfish maybe have come in masses... The "lol" was more an indication that this theory probably isnt correct. Sorry for not being perfect english speaking/writing. And lastly, your an idiot. Big one.
Ohh my bad, you think "mother Earth" sent them. Either way you're an idiot, and I hope you will be the first to get stung in this human extermination theory you have going on.
well im not english so what can i say. but im not rude to other people. How do u know im a kid? cus i speak bad english. its more childish to act like u than speaking bad english.
well i dont count myself so much of a kid when im 14 years old :S but i dont know how old u think people should be when they r not kids anymore. and whats the point of using (') and write (are) when people understand r and u? and i know i spell bad and i dont got the best grade in english. but whats the point of being so freaking rude to people :S
You're a kid until you're old enough to vote. I don't have to explain myself to a child, but just to make you stfu, I was being "rude" to someone who wishes all humans would suffer and die.
More likely human impact on the environment has provided suitable environments for this cubozoan in other waters similarly to how possible run off from the asian main land has produced more adequate conditions for Nemopilema nomurai on a far less seasonal basis.
but its suspected of many more, lots of 3rd world tribes die from it and dont report it and as the marines say "if its not on paper, it didnt happen!"
I never new about them. Thank you for sharing this video. I am totally amazed in how deadly they truly are. May people heed the warning and stay away from them. When some one is at least able to detect and put up the signs to stay out of the water. Scary Stuff there. God bless you and your family.
did you no that they still do not have a cure yet and hey they are part of life ,k

Not more deadly than the Chironex. Still very deadly, but the sting of the Chironex fleckeri induces heart failure within 3 miutes. If the sting doesn't kill them, the pain usually causes them to drown. With the irukandji, the victim has more of a chance.
In the past 100 year the Chironex has only killed ~100 people. It requires a much bigger sting from a Chironex to kill a human than from the Irukandji. While the Chironex's venom does kill a human faster the the Irukandji's the fact that it isn't located close to the shore (mainland) means that it is difficult for people to come into contact with it, unlike the Irukandji.

Yes. That is the current wisdom.
And also that they are fragile, and a struggling fish might easily damage them, so the fish needs to be immobilised quickly.
I have a few full docos on it in my playlists.
Is that where you got it from?
slk320k 2 years ago
Oh yeah, because they're fragile too, I forgot about that part, but that's a good reason. Thanks for the update.

I've seen these on animal planet the only way you can see these bitches is with an underwater flashlight but most of the time even that doesn't work!
Left4Deaddpro 2 years ago
The chironex fleckeri can be easily seen on sunny days by its shadow if it is in shallow water. Thats the easiest way they say.
But the irukandji is way too small for that.
They are usually never seen.
I guess thats why irukandji werent known until the 1960's even though they were around for milennia.

The name IRUKANDJI is taken from the Aboriginal tribe which has ancient ceremonies honoring the tiny jellyfish.
I laugh when they say it was only discovered in the 1960's .... the Irukandji tribe have known about it for many hundreds of years.
Its all covered in the next box jellyfish upload. Check back in a couple of weeks for it.
