Just read a quick note on Wikipedia on these guys. I guess Chris Adler was the original drummer, then Derek Roddy then Charlie Zeleny. Very surprising. Chris Adler is good but I wouldn't have imagined him to be this complex or as capable of some of the funky jazz techniques that show up on this song...

Progressive metal is just metal that has lots of changes in a song, including time signature changes, many riff changes, and sometimes flat-out genre changes. A progressive song also doesn't follow a specific song structure, unlike most radio songs which are structured with a verse, then chorus, same verse with different lyrics, chorus, something different but similar to the rest of the song (maybe a solo), then chorus.

No, though nearly all progressive metal puts a large emphasis on extended instrumental segments. Vocals are much less prominent and less frequently active in prog-metal. If you like Blotted Science and are coming from a death metal background, I would suggest bands like Periphery, Animals As Leaders (instrumental), Spastic Ink (instrumental), Behold... the Arctopus (instrumental), Between the Buried and Me, Born of Osiris, After the Burial, Veil of Maya, Cynic, and Kalisia.
