  • A lot of bums on seats there mate!

  • You could have been fined for what you've done =P

  • fined what an earth for may i ask.

  • sticking his hand out with a camera, well he could of lost his hand and a perfectly good camera.

  • Nothing to do with the signals being against the 158 then?

  • Probably was, but we were branching off from main line so we had clearance to go.

  • Bring on the 158! Great vid m8! Priceless

  • Thanks! It was a memorable thing to film, still makes me laugh, the look on the drivers face of that 158 as out 1st gen gave it a run for its money!

  • newcastle?

  • Proper DMU's where you could open the window, stick your head out for some fresh air and get a great view - Unlike those air-conditioned plastic's.

  • Haha, so you did see it then!

  • @grannyjone

when i travelled the trans penine route, I found the coolest place to sit was in the gangway area between the passenger cabin and the drivers cabin.

  • Good to see the 101 taking on a 158! As for power/vehical the 101s produce 300hp per car while 158's are slightly more - but with a hell of lot more weight to carry? Hence the 101 out-accelerating it. Also 101s have lower gearing so you'd expect them to get up to medium speed faster anyway.

  • WHAT company was the 101 from

    WERE was the 101 going

  • who did that happen !!! a crappy 101 beats a 158 90mph unit

  • 158's still run on the liverpool long distance line. lime street - norwich

  • Class 158s are legendary! It obviously wasn't going full speed.

  • Yeah I used to see NSE 101's which worked Norwich - Cambridge - King's Lynn.

  • Looked like fun! Just wish I'd have paid more attention to them in their final months :-(

  • Mnay an opportunity I have missed too. I.e class 37's on the North Wales coast, should have made more of an effort there.

  • Nice vid. however, sorry, but it's not actually surprising the 101 is beating it - more power per coach, less bulk per coach, low gearing per coach = better acceleration.

No, this isn't meant to be patronising/downheartening, I'm just saying it as I see it, as a simple comment!

  • You forgot to mention quality too :-) Not that I have anything against the 158.

  • I was talking mechanically!

However, whilst I do not know what the seats were like on these units (picture quality doesn't show it too well), if they were the same rough fabric as used on most 1950/1960s stock, sorry but I'd have a 158 anyday!

The comfy. seats on a 158 are in a different league compared to that horrible fabric used by BR which makes me itch for days afterward!

  • The Scud actually has more power at 700hp, and hydraulic transmission, but you're right about it being heavier.

  • Yeh, I thought for some unknown reason it has 2*285hp/car like a 15x! :(

  • One NSE version came up to the North West in the later days of the 101's. Around about 1999-2000 one was around up here.

  • was that out of picadilly and turned past ardwick on the guide bridge line? i used to get that all the time rip 101s

  • Yes it was

  • Hang on a minute the driver of the 158 might have been running on double yellows.

  • Well, probably but you get the idea.

  • that showed that plastic 158! hahaha great vid

  • Go Dmu lol

Love them old 101's,I used to work on them

  • ohhh wat a race!!!!
