I've been addicted to this yummy fruit since I was a little girl when my mom introduced them to me. But here they sell them seasonally. Does anyone know when it starts?
hey guys i have a pricky pear in my yard and we got it from my friend and i want to know how to plant them if anyone got some information about it and stuff plz reply ty
In México they make "queso de tuna" or prickly pear cheese. That's not how you're supposed to peel it. Cut both ends, then cut along, then peal the rest of the skin that's in the middle apart......and ENJOY. Don't eat too many cause your ass can clog by the seeds though..
I picked up one of the cactus pears and now i have about 10 splinters in each hand and they seem to multiply and my friend randomly got a splinter. :(
LOL, this is the first time i've ever seen a non-Hispanic eat a prickly pear!!
In mexico they are called "Tunas" that's the plural form, take the "s" off and you've got singular.
Its a lot easier to enjoy them if you cut off the tops and make a cut from top to bottom that's only as deep as the skin, then you just peel the skin off and you grab it and eat : )
Try not to chew the seeds, just kinda mash them up without actually biting them and then swallow.
@johnperez4628 I can eat a box of the things in a couple of days. I eat the seeds and the sweetpulp in the centre. Im white as sin, and in Canada no less. Mexicans have taste because theyre an awesome fruit.
@johnperez4628 In Arizona we skewer the tuna with a stick or a skewer and singe the skin quickly over a fire and then cut it open. This burns off the tiny burrs off of it and makes it as easy to handle as an apple. Afterwards, cut it open, peel the skin and enjoy. Very tasty fruit.
I use spoons to eat those too! Here in AZ, we not only have cactus fruit, but we have cactus FRIES, and cactus JELLIE! Yep! Cactus JELLIE! It's TOTALLY epic! And hilarious to think that someone would charge for that stuff... But hey, in AZ we trip over it.
I'll never forget the time I saw prickly pear leaves for sale in a Los Angeles grocery store for 3.29 a pound. I was like WHAAAAAT? My grandma would be RICH!(prickly pear FOREST in her front yard. FOREST.)
I love it when they pierce their lips like that. It looks like the cover of Bass Fishing Magazine or something. It actually would be funnier if she put a fishing hook in her lip and had some fishing line hanging off of it.
hahahaha, A little back alley fruit stand. I think I would be terrified by the sketchiness of a back alley fruit stand because the fuirt would then no longer be cactus fruit, but SOMETHING ELSE INTIRELY. O_O
I agree!! the seeds were the most annoying part... too bad they can't invent a hybrid seedless cactus fruit, like seedless grapes...
I actually didn't get splinters (I'm sry you did tho!)... the people that set up the fruit stand grew the fruit themselves so they cleaned them off really good before selling them to me!
LOL Looked like you enjoying eating it, i grow pricky pears, but haven't had any fruit off them yet.

It is really easy to eat, cut the ends off and make a slit down side. Then skin comes off easy. Awesome fruit.

Dang,
I grow and sell those fruits (organically certified of course), and the leaves too.
This is a ringing endorsement!
Thanks!
