  • can you post the chords in a comment or something

  • Did anyone ever tell you that you sound exactly like Tom Cruise?

  • i am going to learn this.

  • Could you please slow down the intro . There is a part right after the F with the added G# right before the G7 that you didn't explain. Please re post. Greatly appreciated.

  • You're a terrific human being for doing this. I've stared playing guitar specifically because of Elliott. Thanks.

  • killer dude, you play perfect

  • very good

  • fuck this video pisses me off it gets me so close to being able to play the song but i still cant.... im going to go watch porn

  • @ibeezzthesheezz same bro

  • lol at the person thumbing down nooby questions

  • elliot smith lorcho

  • it looks like a few people incuding myself are confused about the 2 chords played between the G#/F and the G7. ive tried a few things,... the closest ive come is using a E7 shape and plucking x201xx to x301xx. try it. its pretty close the the turorial 's but not neccesarily Elliot's version. The thing that is throwing me off in the tutorial, is that an overtone sounds making it seem as though one of the notes is an octave higher... not sure though.

  • thanks for posting this but could you explain the part in between when you play the f with the added gsharp and the second g7 cause you dont really explain that at all

  • whats your tuning?

  • I really don't understand the first chord...the c and add a g? :(

  • It's a C chord with the G note fretted (3rd fret) on the bass E string as well. He frets the G with his pinkie but I normally use my ring finger and fret the bass C note (5th string, 3rd fret) with my pinkie. It makes for a fuller sounding chord. Hope this helps.

  • Its just a C shape, but with your 4th finger on the 3rd fret of the bottom (low E) string (which note is a G).

  • It's a regular C chord, but just add a low G (3rd fret on the 6th/low E string). C = x32010, so C/G (C with a G bass) = 332010.

  • oi. Lets see you play it then if your so keen

  • elliott smith was a genious

  • Thanks man, I almost got this down now, such a beautiful song and such a shame he's gone.

  • You did a fantastic job with this lesson. I am really confused about part of it though. I don't understand the added G# over the F chord at all. What is the fingering for that? I also don't understand the chromatic part after the G7 chord either. One last thing, are you playing in a different tuning than Elliott did on the recording? I hear him play with a capo on the first fret but it sounds like you play without the capo. Thank you, and you did a fantastic job!

  • I wondered that too but this tutorial is played a half step down from standard. Hope that helps.

  • great tutorial but can anyone tab the chords??? im having a hard time here

  • that part towards the end after the F with an added G# what are the two chords you quickly play before the G7 F Fm.

  • 5 stars

  • Thanks for that man. Can you post I Better Be Quiet Now? i would really like to learn that song right.

  • GOD THATS HARD!

  • Tidy as tuppence, sir!

    Love this song.

    :)

  • is anyone else having a problem with the finger picking for the intro., or am i just retarded? In all honesty I think its a little from column A and B, but if someone could explain it to me that would be great

  • excellent excellent.

    awesome job man.

i had no idea what the hell he was playing!

    thanks a lot haha =)

  • ya get an A+

  • crox's comment was right about the tuning. Unless I'm stupid, which is entirely possible.....I can deal with it though. Great stuff man!

  • MAN I've tried to play this song over and over and OVER but I just couldn't do it XD Your tutorial is most helpful <3

  • good work man- your tutorials are awesome. very helpful

  • I think that video tutorials, especially ones such as this, are extremely helpful. It helps that I've been studying the tab for quite a while so I perhaps realise what's happening more than someone who's attempting this for the first time. It would be worth providing a link to a tab in the 'about the video' section.

  • hey I've posted a cover of this song, wish I'd seen this first lol!

Have a look if you want. x

  • pretty cool. good guitare play =)

  • Dunno if it has been said or not, but if you're on the tuning that you are - half step down - you gotta put a capo on the 2nd fret.

Capo on the 1st fret for normal tuning.

    Pretty good.

  • I appreciate your tutorals. I learn things must faster by watching people play, and through listening.

These have been great for me, man. =)

  • thanks for making this video. i sort of had a good idea of how it goes, and this helped me get some of the minor things i was missing. great job!

  • Great work :) Could you please write down the chordes in tab, hard to see sometimes :)

  • elliott smith was a plucking genius!!! very cool vid man, im gonna go practice this now...

  • really god job, thank you very much!

  • whats with all the asian jeffs playing elliott on youtube? hehe. you are AWESOME. do southern belle and i'll marry you. i've been having a lot of trouble with that one

  • If its not too much to ask, could you write out the tabs you used? I looked on a few sites and they look different and sound different than the ones you use.

  • okay so this has been super helpful, probably one of my fav elliott smith songs and ive tried to learn it before with not a lot of success but this got me further.. so thanks, i just wish i could find the tabs somewhere because i don't know if i can get the whole solo.. so if any of you all have tabs or anything.. help me out?

  • too fast for me...i can barely see what these chord shapes look like...yer hearts in the right place..and i really wanted to learn this one

  • Hi Jeff, greetings from France. your tutorials are a great idea, they are amazing. After years and years of practising guitar, i just started finger picking, and being a fan of Elliott Smith, this is perfect... How about a tutorial of "Everybody's talkin'"? I'm sure it should be a piece of cake for you, and a great song to learn. Thanks again for your help and great skills. à bientôt

  • Really great videos jeff. Looking forward to more.

  • hello...awesome video! it sounds exactly like the song but I couldn't catch up with you, do you happen to have the tabs for this? the ones on the net are really crappy and i like yours way better...thanks!

  • nice. slow er down a little bit. unless that's your own style to this song. great.

  • I've been playing for 15 years and am definately jealous of people like you with so much command. I bet I gotta practice five times as much to keep up with you...jerk. Thanks for these tutorials and keep up the great work.

  • your tutorials are awesome man keep it up

  • thanks man! i've been super super busy with school recently but i'm hoping to dedicate some time on the weekends to posting more frequently. take care!

  • ok thx man, looking forward to that.

  • how can u call this a tutorial, no way anyone will understand the chords except for maybe the c with added g

  • i tend to go a little fast through the parts, sorry about that, i'm trucking through the second parts to these where i go super slowly through each chord so hopefully they will be more helpful. take care

  • @Rooiebert Well why don't you post a better one

  • Thank you so much for doing these tutorials, they're really great. Thing is, I can't keep up with you. Do you have all of these songs writen out in tab by any chance? I'm a huge Elliot fan, and a decent guitar player, but a bit rusty, and it would be so much easier to be able to look at these chords written out while trying to play them. Please and thank you!!! =B=

  • Thank you for helping me fulfill my desire to play these songs. I really appreciate it.

  • what kinda guitar do you have?

  • it's a martin d2r in really bad shape. i have to take it in to get adjusted and setup properly to play out a little more. thansk for checking the clip!

  • What are you tuned to?

  • the strings are in standard tuning but all dropped. To transpose it to the recorded version key, capo the fourth fret and it is the same. I lost my capo and was a bit lazy (hence didn't bring the strings all up). I also can't sing anywhere near his highs so this was a bit easier to demonstrate the pattern with vocal accomp. thanks for checking the clip, message me with any questions, this tutorial's a bit sloppy but I'll clean it up and go into detail in PII :) take care!

  • you can go impressively low though.
