It's fascinating how the same creature seems to be seen all over the world. And these stories go way back: in 500 BC the ancient Greeks told stories about 'wildmen'. Either there's a real creature that lives all over the world, or there's something really weird going on in people's minds everywhere. Both possibilities deserve study.

@ironychan For the psychological aspect, it could be a general concept of what we have transcended, with a fear of meeting our former selves, and possibly becoming like them again.

With that said, I still like to consider the possibility of a rare breed of gorilla or other such monkey, adapted to live in places like America or India. I mean, the "spirit bear" in Alaska is so rare that it took a National Geographic photographer 2 weeks in the woods just to glimpse one!
