@stybarrow like a piano but with glass plates, invented in the mid-1800s? In German we call it Glasplattenklavier. The Museum in Regensburg (Bavaria) has one (inventory number K 1975 33)
I'm afraid I couldn't find an English translation of the name anywhere :(
You can find images and descriptions in Michael Wackerbauer: Die Musikinstrumente im Historischen Museum der Stadt Regensburg (Regensburger Studien und Quellen zur Kulturgeschichte, Bd. 18), ISBN 978-3-86845-029-3 (only in German)
You may be thinking of the glass harmonica, invented by Benjamin Franklin. Graduated glass cylinders are spun via a foot treadle, and the player touches the cylinders with wet fingers to produce the sound. There are You Tube glass harmonic videos!
As a professional harpsichordist might you like to review or link my recently uploaded HANDEL IN IRELAND VIDEO TO BE FOUND AT BridgetHarpsichord.
Thanks for making such a good site to promote this lovely music

Great painting.... what is it? Nicholson always did a good job.... wonder if he plays at all, now that he gave up his musical career
