I just love Hayao Miyazaki. Everything about his movies just makes me want to be emerse my self into his completely creative and beautiful world. And his characters are just so fun and amazing. I mean how can you not love Howl, Sophie, Kiki, Satsuki, Mai, etc?
@Nitsirtriscuit It's because all of the Miyazaki films were composed by Joe Hisaishi so they have interlocking themes to them. It's worth to own them all tho :3
@ShadowDancer00 I know it's just that the motif is so similar I feel like he's cheating. They're all great, don't get me wrong, but I think he could do better.
This is one of the best movies I've ever watched in my life. Actually, all of Hayao Miyazaki's movies are in my Top 20s. He is just... a genius. There is no words to describe him. And also Joe Hisaishi, who can evoke feelings and emotions with his music. :) I loved watching Totoro, until my mom accidentally taped Oprah over it.. T>T
Somewhat reminds me of Dragon Boy from Spirited Away.. I've never seen the movies from these awesome people, but I'm gonna change that this weekend.. Oh yes..
Great film that works on so many different levels. I love the 'zen' like calm bits such as the bus stop scene. 'Timeless' would be a perfect description for this film, so would 'elegiac'
His songs always remind me of how grateful it is to be alive. It brings you back to your childhood, and brings you into a world of adventures and fantasy. I get tears of joy from listening to his songs. :)
@insanetimelord I wouldn't say they did a horrible job, but it certainly wasn't as good as the original dub (though maybe I'm biased, as I grew up with the other one). I do think Disney has done a terrific job on most of the dubs though.
@SloganYams did Disney also done the Laputa dub? i have both versions, the subs and dubs. i compare the 2. and lets just say the english dub is needlessly talkative. they added extra dialogues out of nowhere.
@arsetothem Yes they did the Laputa dub, and additional chatter aside, it's actually quite good (alright, Pazu sounds a tad older than he should, but not bad). Cloris Leachman and Mark Hamill are terrific in it. Also, if you get the 2010 edition DVD, they got rid of the added chatter. Though sadly, they also got rid of the rescore Joe Hisaishi did for it in the 2003 release, which was better than the original score (you can track it down on CD though, I own it).
@SloganYams really? better check it out... but where?.even though i still prefer the japdub on ghibli. cause the first copy of Ghibli i bought is a complete collection (except Ponyo and onwards) JAPDUB w/ ENGSUBS.
@SloganYams I LOVE Disney's dub of CASTLE IN THE SKY. Everything about it. Yes, there are some lines I could have done without (only the last part of Sheeta's speech) but elsewise it's awesome. And I agree, James and Anna were not bad at all, just a tad too mature, and yes, everyone was awesome, especially Dola and Muska. I personally like the 2003 version better, for instance. For TOTORO, I'm torn; I like both Disney's and Fox's dub equally, although the latter has more please OP/ED songs.
@Turnajon Finally! Someone who can accept a dub as being great! Thank you! Thank you! I also love the dubs for Spirited Away, Howl, Ponyo (arguably THE best) and, well, all of them. Like I said, I do like the Disney dub of Totoro, but I grew up with the Fox version, so there's an inescapable bias there.
@SloganYams Of course I am open to accepting dubs and believe that they can be good; why else would I stand up for them? CiTS is one such dub, although seriously, when it comes to the rest of the Ghibli films, it's seriously hard to get any better than Disney. I'm really looking forward to ARRIETTY, BTW. I also wrote detailed reviews on the dubs on a blogspot I made, too, just to show you further how much of a dub fan I am, if you're interested. :)
@Turnajon Glad to hear it. I get so tired of people always saying things like "it hurts my ears" as if they have some refined taste in voice acting or production, they just criticize the dubs on the sole grounds that they aren't Japanese. Gets annoying.
I too am greatly looking forward to Arrietty, and hope Miyazaki officially announces his next film soon (I for one, would love if he went through with the Porco sequel idea).
@SloganYams Which is exactly why I always watch dubs like this: I don't even try to compare them to the Japanese performances. I'm interested in now they fare on their own. I also had a chance to see parts of the '80s dub of LAPUTA and I can safely say that Disney's is better. Despite being more "faithful", the '80s dub sounded very bad to my ears, and I just couldn't fathom how ANYONE could consider these voices better than those of Disney's. (continued)
@SloganYams (cont.) James and Anna weren't ideal for Pazu or Sheeta, but I thought they both did a much better job; Barbara & Lara sounded very off and detached, as if they didn't know what they were doing. Jeff's Muska was what really killed it for me; he sounded neither menacing nor even subtly evil; Mark owned the role from the start. The same was true with Dola and the other characters. The script sounded choppy, as well. Disney's dub may be loose, but I'd rather hear that dub any day.
@Turnajon For one thing, Mark Hamill is one of the greatest voice actors of all time (so annoying when people say he did nothing after Star Wars), and he added the right kind of "cool and collected menace" Muska needed. And Cloris Leechman brought so much life and energy to Dola.
Anime fans feel the need to belittle dubs because they have the delusion that anything in Japanese is flawless and anything in English is flawed. :P Such silly people, anime fans.
@SloganYams That's a viewpoint I've never understood, especially since Miyazaki himself is not in favor of subtitles. Good luck with trying to tell that to people on IMDB or Amazon, where they seem determined to push the subtitled versions and/or pre-Disney dubs down our throats as if it's the ONLY way to see these movies instead of giving us a choice on how we want to see it.
@Turnajon First off, trying to talk reasonably with anyone on IMDB is folly. And Amazon's ratings are always the product of trolls (let's rate Mario Galaxy down 'cuz it's not on teh Xbox). I'm all for watching these lovely masterpieces of Miyazaki in their original Japanese, but not at the expense of watching them in English. Disney has done a great job.
As the great Jigo said: "You can't win against fools."
@SloganYams Yeah, sadly, some fans will never be satisfied. I imagine there are quite a lot of them prepared to write off the ARRIETTY dub beforehand without even seeing it, as I've often see fans do with several of these Disney dubs. I'm kinda curious about the UK dub, but I won't be adverse to seeing Disney's. I also like that more and more people are becoming aware of Ghibli; I always felt it was the MARKETING, not the dubbing, was the obstacle that kept the films from being bigger here.
@Turnajon Of course it's the marketing that's been the problem. I tell this story to everyone but, when Spirited Away was first released, I only ever saw one commercial for it, and that was at 2AM! It definitely caught my interest but I never managed to see it until its brief theatrical re-release after its Oscar win (speaking of which, Ponyo also should have won an Oscar, in retrospect it's far better than Up).
@Turnajon *continue* Ponyo seemed to be the first time a Ghibli movie was actually advertised. Naturally, anime fans wrote it off as soon as they saw the names "Cyrus" and "Jonas" attached. But they ended up doing a great job. I'd rather hear kids doing the voices of kids instead of some thirty-odd year old making some high-pitched, squeaky voice.
But at least you and I can be assured that we fairly give these (great) dubs a chance and appreciate their qualities. It's their loss.
@SloganYams Yeah, I'm all for it, although in CASTLE IN THE SKY, James and Anna were roughly around 21 and 16, which is not exactly close to their character's age, but they're not high-pitched or squeaky either, unlike their JAL dub counterparts.
I'm in agreement about PONYO's dub being good (Tina Fey was my fave, although Noah took a while for me to get used to), but I could've done without the pop song at the end. That was the only thing I disliked about the dub. Elsewise it was fine.
@SloganYams I know what you mean, though, about fans writing off PONYO on account of Cyrus and Jonas; one time when I was at a con, I ran into a man and his daughter, both of who hated PONYO because they hated Noah Cyrus. It really made me angry inside, because I remember hearing similar atmospheres for the other Ghibli dubs, which really isn't fair.
Don't worry, we're not the only ones who give the dubs a chance. There are others out there, just look beyond the internet. :)
@Turnajon One has to wonder why someone would "hate" Noah Cyrus anyway (even if you don't like Miley Cyrus, or her father). Do we judge people by their siblings now? Noah Cyrus is a kid, seems a bit heartless to hate her...
As for the pop song, I at least respect it for still having cute lyrics, but understand the beef with it. With that said, the non-remixed English version is my favorite version of the Ponyo song (you can get it on iTunes!).
@Turnajon *continued* But remix aside, Ponyo may very well be my favorite dub: Tina Fey, Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchete (spelling?), Matt Damon, Betty White, Cloris Leachman...Seriously, people must be good at deluding themselves if they think with actors like that (and Pixar filmmakers behind it) that it's bad. And again, I thought Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas were, dare I say, adorable.
But yes, you, me, and others who appreciate these quality dubs should stick together. :)
@SloganYams You said it! :) (BTW, that last line reminds me of Pazu's "Well, we orphans should stick together, don't ya think?" Kind of a coincidence, no?)
@SloganYams Anime fans tend to belittle dubs because not many dubbers can do a good Japanese to English dubs. Furthermore, some words/sentences cannot be accurately translate to English from Japanese.
But you are right. Mark Hamill does great Voice Acting. He was also involved in a lot of broadway shows, computer games acting such as the "Wing Commander" series ad TV shows.
@Douglas128 I know that a lot of dubs are no good. But the reason for that is it's just random companies rushing the dubs with generic voice actors (not calling voice actors generic, just these particular ones). But just because a lot of dubs are bad doesn't mean they all are. But appreciating individual people and products clearly isn't the forte of anime fans (they tend to, after all, like anything that's anime despite quality).
@Douglas128 *continued* And the thing is, Disney has done nothing but great work with all of Ghibli's dubs. Anime fans think that "ooh, I hear some bad dubs on TV so all of them are bad." And that's an ignorant way of thinking. Disney does a great job because A) They have great filmmakers like John Lasseter behind them. B) They find REAL actors and fit them with the characters. And C) They have great writers work them out. And D) No editing! It's as true as translation can get.
@SloganYams Finally got a good reply instead of the usual mudslinging action. Yes, you are right. There are good dubs and there are bad dubs but a lot of Anime fans will see some bad dubs and brand all as bad.
Nevermind, just keep the good dubs and enjoy and forget about those who doesn't know better.
@Douglas128 Absolutely. Especially the Disney Ghibli dubs; they are anything but bad. If anything, I'd say that without them, we wouldn't even KNOW about Miyazaki in America, period.
@Turnajon *continued* Also, I'll have to check out your blog sometime, sounds interesting. I also have a blog reviewing movies and video games, and Ponyo is one of the only movies I've given a perfect score on it (haven't reviewed other Ghibli films yet). Though it was a couple of years ago (meaning, when my reviews weren't any good) I did review it as the dub, and noted its quality. And now I'm embarrassed as my rant seems to have turned into self-promotion...
This is the only Hayao movie they've done that I didn't like, all the others were terrific, but this fell short of my expectations. (I may also be biased since I've owned the fox version for about 17 years lol)
@insanetimelord I agree, though I wouldn't say I dislike Disney's dub, it just lacks the "push" (for lack of a better word) than the others and the original Totoro dub. Which Disney dub(s) is(are) your favorite(s)?
@insanetimelord I agree, do you know where i could find the movie online with the original voices? Our Japanese teacher used to play this for us back in first and second grade to help us with reading the subtitles :)
I remember watching Toy Story 3 and seeing Totoro toy. And I thought, "Awwwww, my childhood is in the movie that might end my childhood." Then I slapped myself and said, "darn it, you're loving Toy Story 3 today." Needless to say, Toy Story 3 became a childhood movie along side Totoro. And I am 17 years ago. I don't know when my childhood will end.
@kayygirrl If we made those two rule the world then there wouldn't be any wars because everyone would play in harmony with Hisaishis music! Those two are the rulers that the world needs! Just to be a little bit mainstream but also to let future kids know, thumbs up on this, let it be on top forever so that no one will forget our opinions!
This movie is part of my life. I grew up watching this movie. It is innocent and soothing. My parents even named me after the young girl Mei. (: and im proud to have my name come from such a nice movie
When I watched this movie, my friend asked me what was my favorite part about the movie and I told her the music they played! It is such adorable music!
@ShadowUnit0985 pixar's lamp made an appearance in spirited away. pixar and sutdio ghibli have alot of friendly relationships. definitely cute to see totoro in toy story.
I remember watching this movie when i was like 7.This wonderful song helped me fall asleep *sigh* so much nostalgia...I don't know if i spelled that correctly but whatever :)
this song makes me cry. its so magical and blows my mind... i love all of Miyazakis movies, hes a true hero for me :) i adore his imagination... his movies and these songs makes me feel alive. might sound ridicilious, but you dont know how much i love them and how much they mean to me :D
Someone came up to me and gave me a little Totoro stuffed animal that they found on the floor...When I saw it this song just kept playing in my head and I kept getting flashbacks from the movie...You should've seen me..I think I had the biggest smile in the world :)
It's an urban legend. Miyazaki based the story on his own childhood. Stop trying to turn a perfectly nice movie into some sick twisted thing. The same person who came up with this theory also said that Chihiro from Spirited Away was a prostitute.
Spirited Away isn't "about" prostitution. It's simply an allegory for it. The Oxford American Dictionary defines allegory as: a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.
The theme of prostitution is hidden in the movie - hence, an allegory for it. This does not mean it is the only theme; love, friendship, and determination define it much more than its allegorical nature.
@ltran96 no it doesnt. even if you understand the japanese cultural background, it isnt. its a fictional story with realistic situations and emotions in it. its mostly about a childs innocence, like mei who thinks she can cure her mom with corn. but it also briefly touches the concept of death when satsuki is afraid her mom died or when they find the sandal in the pond. its actually a happy story. if you pay attention, all the shrines represent protection. even the symbol on Totoro's tree does.
This is the kind of song I'd listen to when I go into a Chinese restaurant. I'd be sitting at a table in this empty restaurant while staring at the old guy in the corner who appears to be blind. Suddenly, a small man would walk in and approach this man. "Hello there, Sergeant." the man would say. "Sergeant eh? It's been a while since I've been called that..." the blind man would reply. Suddenly, the door would bust open and as a gang of thugs walk in. "HEY OLD MAN." they would yell.
If anyone has the chance to visit Hokaido, go visit the city of Otaru. There is a music box store there that plays a wonderful version of this song outside with the use of bells, absolutely wonderful to listen to on a snowy day
so beautiful.

I'm in agreement about PONYO's dub being good (Tina Fey was my fave, although Noah took a while for me to get used to), but I could've done without the pop song at the end. That was the only thing I disliked about the dub. Elsewise it was fine.
Turnajon 3 weeks ago
@SloganYams I know what you mean, though, about fans writing off PONYO on account of Cyrus and Jonas; one time when I was at a con, I ran into a man and his daughter, both of who hated PONYO because they hated Noah Cyrus. It really made me angry inside, because I remember hearing similar atmospheres for the other Ghibli dubs, which really isn't fair.
Don't worry, we're not the only ones who give the dubs a chance. There are others out there, just look beyond the internet. :)
Turnajon 3 weeks ago
@Turnajon One has to wonder why someone would "hate" Noah Cyrus anyway (even if you don't like Miley Cyrus, or her father). Do we judge people by their siblings now? Noah Cyrus is a kid, seems a bit heartless to hate her...
As for the pop song, I at least respect it for still having cute lyrics, but understand the beef with it. With that said, the non-remixed English version is my favorite version of the Ponyo song (you can get it on iTunes!).
SloganYams 3 weeks ago
@Turnajon *continued* But remix aside, Ponyo may very well be my favorite dub: Tina Fey, Liam Neeson, Cate Blanchete (spelling?), Matt Damon, Betty White, Cloris Leachman...Seriously, people must be good at deluding themselves if they think with actors like that (and Pixar filmmakers behind it) that it's bad. And again, I thought Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas were, dare I say, adorable.
But yes, you, me, and others who appreciate these quality dubs should stick together. :)
SloganYams 3 weeks ago
@SloganYams You said it! :) (BTW, that last line reminds me of Pazu's "Well, we orphans should stick together, don't ya think?" Kind of a coincidence, no?)
Turnajon 3 weeks ago
@Turnajon Yeah, sure, coincidence...That's it. ;)
Send me a friend request if you want, I tried to send one your way but can't figure out the new YouTube design...

@Turnajon Lol....your phrase "we orphans should stick together" really rings a bell.
Douglas128 3 weeks ago
@SloganYams Anime fans tend to belittle dubs because not many dubbers can do a good Japanese to English dubs. Furthermore, some words/sentences cannot be accurately translate to English from Japanese.
But you are right. Mark Hamill does great Voice Acting. He was also involved in a lot of broadway shows, computer games acting such as the "Wing Commander" series ad TV shows.
Douglas128 1 month ago
@Douglas128 I know that a lot of dubs are no good. But the reason for that is it's just random companies rushing the dubs with generic voice actors (not calling voice actors generic, just these particular ones). But just because a lot of dubs are bad doesn't mean they all are. But appreciating individual people and products clearly isn't the forte of anime fans (they tend to, after all, like anything that's anime despite quality).
SloganYams 1 month ago
@Douglas128 *continued* And the thing is, Disney has done nothing but great work with all of Ghibli's dubs. Anime fans think that "ooh, I hear some bad dubs on TV so all of them are bad." And that's an ignorant way of thinking. Disney does a great job because A) They have great filmmakers like John Lasseter behind them. B) They find REAL actors and fit them with the characters. And C) They have great writers work them out. And D) No editing! It's as true as translation can get.
SloganYams 1 month ago
@SloganYams Finally got a good reply instead of the usual mudslinging action. Yes, you are right. There are good dubs and there are bad dubs but a lot of Anime fans will see some bad dubs and brand all as bad.
Nevermind, just keep the good dubs and enjoy and forget about those who doesn't know better.
Douglas128 1 month ago
@Douglas128 Absolutely. Especially the Disney Ghibli dubs; they are anything but bad. If anything, I'd say that without them, we wouldn't even KNOW about Miyazaki in America, period.
Turnajon 4 weeks ago
@Turnajon *continued* Also, I'll have to check out your blog sometime, sounds interesting. I also have a blog reviewing movies and video games, and Ponyo is one of the only movies I've given a perfect score on it (haven't reviewed other Ghibli films yet). Though it was a couple of years ago (meaning, when my reviews weren't any good) I did review it as the dub, and noted its quality. And now I'm embarrassed as my rant seems to have turned into self-promotion...

@SloganYams
This is the only Hayao movie they've done that I didn't like, all the others were terrific, but this fell short of my expectations. (I may also be biased since I've owned the fox version for about 17 years lol)
insanetimelord 1 month ago
@insanetimelord I agree, though I wouldn't say I dislike Disney's dub, it just lacks the "push" (for lack of a better word) than the others and the original Totoro dub. Which Disney dub(s) is(are) your favorite(s)?
SloganYams 1 month ago
@insanetimelord I agree, do you know where i could find the movie online with the original voices? Our Japanese teacher used to play this for us back in first and second grade to help us with reading the subtitles :)

I remember watching Toy Story 3 and seeing Totoro toy. And I thought, "Awwwww, my childhood is in the movie that might end my childhood." Then I slapped myself and said, "darn it, you're loving Toy Story 3 today." Needless to say, Toy Story 3 became a childhood movie along side Totoro. And I am 17 years ago. I don't know when my childhood will end.

kayygirrl 3 months ago 225
@kayygirrl If we made those two rule the world then there wouldn't be any wars because everyone would play in harmony with Hisaishis music! Those two are the rulers that the world needs! Just to be a little bit mainstream but also to let future kids know, thumbs up on this, let it be on top forever so that no one will forget our opinions!

It's an urban legend. Miyazaki based the story on his own childhood. Stop trying to turn a perfectly nice movie into some sick twisted thing. The same person who came up with this theory also said that Chihiro from Spirited Away was a prostitute.
skyhawk431 5 months ago 4
@skyhawk431
This does not mean it is the only theme; love, friendship, and determination define it much more than its allegorical nature.

totoro has an extremely dark and disturbing true meaning.
google it.
ltran96 5 months ago
