It has to do with "southern pride"......most rednecks don't want(or don't admit)to believe in what the flag stood for and just use it to express their individuality from the rest of the world.....like goth kids in black....it really has nothing to do with the civil war, unless someone likes to collect memorabilia from that era, it's just something they made to represent them....like Juggalos with Hatchet Man, and Metalheads with the horns, and emos with the hair.
